Your Favorite Enemy

Chapter 8: It Had To Be You

I woke up in the morning, groggy and hardly aware of anything that was happening. The ghost of my kiss with Alex from the night before clung to my lips and I sighed, making my way out to the main part of the bus. Jack was the only other one awake, and even then, barely.

“Hey, Maxine,” he greeted. “How’d you sleep?”

“I had a hard time sleeping actually. What about you?” I asked as I grabbed a box of cereal from the cupboard to pour myself a bowl.

“I slept like a rock,” he replied. “Oh yeah! Did you listen to that Pierce the Veil song yet?
“Yeah, didn’t they play that at the show the other night? Plus, I listened to their whole set and I really liked them. Vic’s got a great voice,” I commented.

“Good! Now, your next assignment is to look up Mayday Parade. Amber Lynn, Jamie All Over, Miserable At Best, Kids in Love, and Anywhere But Here are all awesome songs,” he mentioned.

I grabbed a pen of the counter and wrote it all down as he spoke. I sat down next to him at the two person table and sighed. “Okay, got it. But, in return, you have to listen to It Had To Be You by Motion City Soundtrack.”

“Deal,” he said, and it was silent for half a moment before he spoke again. “What’s got you down?”

“Well...Alex was drunk last night-” I began.

“Oh god, what did he do? I don’t care if he’s my best friend, I will punch him in the balls if he hurt you, and so will Matt,” he interrupted.

I laughed. “Nothing too awful. He kissed me though.”

A look of confusion crossed Jack’s features. “Then why are you upset?”

“He was so drunk last night that he won’t even remember it. I mean, what’s the point of kissing someone you like if they won’t remember it?” I wondered.

“Good point. But, if it helps, I don’t think he would’ve kissed you if he didn’t like you,” he replied.

I smiled softly at him. “Thanks.”

Alex waltzed into the room and yawned, stretching as he greeted us. “Morning!”

“Well aren’t you the chipper one at such an early hour,” I commented as he flopped down onto the couch.

“I had a wonderful dream,” he grinned.

A blush began to rise on my cheeks, but then I paused. “Alex, why aren’t you hungover? When we...talked last night, you were hammered.”

He hesitated, but shrugged. “I’ve had way more to drink than that lots of times. It doesn’t leave any after effects anymore I guess.”

“But you don’t remember anything we talked about?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Nope. Why, did I say something stupid?”

“No,” I replied. “You didn’t say anything really.”

It wasn’t a lie since he didn’t say anything, but it was something he did. I watched the way he interacted, trying to find something to grab onto, something that showed he would remember. His hair was a mess on his head and his clothes were wrinkled, but he was still as attractive as ever. He smiled, and the sun coming in from the windows gleamed off of his white teeth. Why couldn’t he just fall in love with me or something, and make this all easier on me? We could be something beautiful, and all it took was some effort. But which one of us would be the first to bend?

Notes

Sorry for another short chapter. The next one will be longer...and much mroe interesting ;)

So I just read this story, all in one sitting, and seriously loved it. You're a really great writer. :)
Alex and Max's relationship was so sincere, and even though the end was kind of surprising, I found it perfect in a way. Like one of my favorite endings I've ever read to a fic, actually. Instead of very cliche it more so fit the pieces together, if that makes sense.
I really loved it. If you ever choose to maybe rewrite this story, or perhaps do a sequel to it, I will definitely read. I looked on your profile and unfortunately you don't seem to have anymore Alex/OC centered stories. But if you ever write a new one of those, feel free to let me know as well.
One of the better stories I've read in a while, great job with it. :)

@Billie Joe Gaskarth You're lovely. Thank you <3

No leave it as it is, you may think it can be improved but so can everything, start a new one then you can look back and see how you've developed as a writer :) just personal opinion though ;)
