Pets, not Slaves

Why Am I Worried?

Chapter 18

Jack is acting strange. Really strange. It's been an entire week now, with only the slightest sign of improvement. He hasn't been eating, insisting he's too busy to do anything. He's been sleeping, but at unusual times and not in his bed. He'll fall asleep at his desk working on documents or other work things. He barely talked for two days, but how he talks to himself non stop. I felt terrible, almost like it was my fault. But what made me feel worse is that I actually cared about him. I actually felt bad for a blood sucker. So I decided to talk to Sloan about him.

I take a deep breath before knocking on her door. As she opens the door, it hits me.

I don't know what to say

I sit down on her bed next to Mariah while Sloan closes the door and continues to work on her nails.

"What's up?" She asks.

"I'm a little worried about your brother." I say, regretting that I said it the second the words left my lips. Mariah just stares at me. After ranting about how much I hate vampires, she's obviously confused.

"Yea, me too." Sloan says, shaking me out of my thoughts.

"Who's Tyler?" I ask. Sloan drops her bottle of nail polish, and I watch it shatters on the floor. Mariah jumps up and starts to clean it up.

"Wha-where did you hear that name?" She asks, shocked.

"I've heard Jack mumble it a lot, and a few times in his sleep. And also, Crowley kept saying stuff like 'it's your fault he died' which sent Jack into a total meltdown."

Sloan groans, resting her forehead on her knees and tugging at her knees. She sits like that for a minute before sitting up straight.

"Tyler was Jack's favorite slave. Jack loved him more than anything, protected him from everything and wouldn't take his eyes off of him. Tyler adored him. Jack found him in the woods, dehydrated and too weak to move. Jack brought him back here, and learned Tyler didn't know anything about monsters. All he knew is something killed his parents. Jack got really angry when our brother left, and when Tyler noticed the fangs and foam Jack had to explain, but Tyler wasn't scared of him. If anything, he was fascinated. He only knew about vampires though, and Jack tears himself apart because he thinks the reason he's gone is he didn't know all the danger. He trusted everyone, not knowing people could be evil. When he went missing, Jack sent out three-fourths of the guards to search for him. They searched for six months with no luck. He would have never stopped searching if we didn't need the guards to fight. He didn't speak, he barely ate, and he didn't sleep because he had such terrible nightmares. Then he got really bad. He went on a killing spree, killing humans and monsters and everything in sight." She pauses, noticing my shocked expression.

"Don't worry, I ended up snapping him out of it." Sloan reassures. I nod.

"He saw the damage he did and started acting like he is now. But he was obsessed with humans. I think it was because he felt like Tyler's disappearance was his fault."

"How long until he started acting normally again?" I ask. She stares at me for a minute before answering.

"When you came" she whispers. I feel creeped out, scared, nervous, and excited all at once, if that's even possible.

"What?" I ask. I don't even understand.

"I don't know. He hasn't a personal sla-pet since Tyler." She says.

"Well how do we fix him then?" I ask, a little irritated at this point.

"Wait a sec... Why do you care? I thought you hated him." Sloan questions.

I don't know

Because it's my fault

He doesn't deserve to be so miserable

I'm lonely without him

He's starting to scare me

I kinda miss him

"I don't know what to do at this point. It's putting me in an uncomfortable position." I shrug.

"You could just say you care about him. It's not the end of the world." She taunts.

"No, the end of the world happened when you filthy blood suckers came." I snap, standing up and heading for the door.

"I'm human just like you!" She cries. I turn around and glare at her.

"Yea, for only a few more weeks." I yell. I'm nearly down the hall when she runs and grabs my arm.

"Wait, I know how to fix him." She pants, not letting go of my arm. I look at her, a questioning look on my face. She catches her breath before speaking again.

"Let me grab Mariah. You'll just have to play along, okay?" She asks. I nod.

Blood. I can smell it, I can feel it, i can see it, I can nearly taste it, and I hear the blood curdling screams that come with it.

I'm frozen in place. I can't move, I can't think, I can't do anything but stare in horror at the scene in front of me.

"Jack!" Tyler screams, as another cut appears on his skin and blood pours out.

"Jack help me!" He screams again, struggling against the restraints. I tell my feet move but they won't listen; I'm frozen in place.

"I trusted you." He whispers, before his eyes turn black. Demon eyes. The black emptiness the taunts the soul seeps through his eyes.

Black eyes. That's the last thing I see. I'll never see those stunning blue-green eyes ever again.

"Jack!" I hear someone yell. I lift my head up from where it was lying on my desk, hitting it on the shelf above me."

"Hey, it was just a nightmare." Sloan coos, rubbing my back.

But it isn't. It isn't a nightmare. Something like that happened, and all because of me.

I feel my lips moving but I don't understand what I'm mumbling. I notice now that Alexander and Mariah are standing behind Sloan.

"Come join us for dinner." She pleads, grabbing my hand. I shake her off.

"I don't have time. Too much to do." I mumble, turning back to the work in front of me. It's unimportant, actually, but I don't think I can handle a social situation.

Sloan interrupts my thoughts by grabbing my papers and examining them.

"This isn't even your job! You hire people to do this for you!" Sloan yells, tearing the paper into shreds. I just stare at her.

"Stop all this!" She screams, throwing the shreds of paper behind her.

"Jack, we love you." She says more calmly this time.

"We love you, but this has gone on long enough. You are hurting the people who love you. Me! Mariah! Alex!" She screams, her voice raising in volume with each word.

"Alexander, not Alex." I hear Alex mumble. Sloan slaps him on the back of his head.

"You are hurting us when you do this! This is no different than killing people! Your killing us!" She screams, her hands now gripping the sides of my arms.

Painful memories flash through my mind. People screaming, sobbing, the smell and feel of blood. Just like my dream. I did to others what Crowley did the Tyler. I'm no different than him.

"If you feel so guilty, then why are you ignoring us! Your hurting us!" She yells, her nails pressing into my skin through my shirt.

"You are the only family I have left. You saw what being alone did to Tyler. Then why do this to me?" She whispers, her grip softening.

You know when you don't understand something, and then someone says something and everything makes sense? That's what this was like.

Sloan interrupts my thoughts by squeezing my arms before letting go.

"I hope you realize what your doing." She whispers, standing up straight and turning her back to me. I jump out of my chair, twirling her around and kissing her forehead before hugging her. I don't speak. I don't know what to say. I notice Alex and Mariah are standing there awkwardly, so I let go of Sloan.

"You're sleep deprived. Go take a shower, you smell. Then go to bed." Sloan demands. I nod and head up to my room. I notice that Alex is awkwardly following me.

"Something wrong, Alex?" I ask.

"Alexander. And should I be doing something right now?" He asks.

"Nope. You can go to bed." I say.

"Do I, uh, still sleep in your bed?" He asks.

"Yep." I reply, opening the door to my room and walking straight into the bathroom. I need a hot shower to clear my head anyway.

Notes

This is shit, and the next chapter will be shit. This part is so boring I'm half assing it, sorry.
