We Were Born To Lose
But Compared To Your Eyes, Nothing Shines Quite As Bright
I felt something soft below me...In fact it was all around me. I opened my eyes but that was a huge mistake as the light poured into my head painfully. I groaned and hid my face.
“Jack?” Cooed a voice next to me. I carefully opened my eyes to see the Prince sitting in a chair next to the bed.
“Hey.” I rasped gasping at the pain since my throat way dry and very sore.
“Do you feel okay?” He asked, studying my face. I thought for a second. I wasn’t nauseous but I had that horrible ‘sick’ feeling, my head had it’s own heartbeat, I had chills, and I swore the bed was moving.
“Y-yeah.” I lied.
“Liar. You look like shit. I’m getting Mom.” He said before bolting out of the room. I tried to stop him but I didn’t have the strength so I just closed my eyes and fell under.
A warm, sweet, thick liquid was being poured down my throat. I coughed but then Mom’s voice said,
“Drink.”
I did as she said and the pain in my throat subsided somewhat. “How are you feeling?” She asked.
“Fantastic.” I whispered sarcastically.
“I’m sure after all your gallivanting in the forrest. Nearly scared us all to death!” She scolded in the way mothers do that even though their scolding you, you can see how much they care.
“Sorry.” I whispered again.
“No matter, you’re safe. And besides, you’ll be better in a couple days.” She smiled.
“Where will I be staying?” I asked.
“What’s wrong with here?”
“It’s the Prince’s quarters.”
“The guards wanted to move you but he refused.”
“Oh.” I said. Why would he want me in his bed? I’m sure i seem filthy to him.
“I suspect he’s taking such great care with you now because he lost his last servant to an illness.” She explained. I nodded, It made sense. “Anyways, you’ve got some people here to see yo-“
“JACK!” Alice screamed, bursting through the door and hugging me followed by Cass, Daniel, and Matt.
“Hey!” I smiled.
“You need to hurry up and get better because we miss you!” Cass exclaimed.
“Okay I’ll try.” I laughed.
“Nice room. How’d you score the Prince’s?” Matt asked, looking around.
“No idea.” I admitted.
“I should catch what you have, maybe Lisa will let me stay in her room.” Alice smirked.
“Nice try.” Said a feminine voice, laced with laughter. We turned around to see a beautiful women standing in the doorway. She wore a long dark blue dress that had longer strips of fabric attached at the elbow. Everyone bowed and I wanted to get out of bed to do the same but I lacked the strength so I just dipped my head deeply.
“Good morning Jack, I’m Lisa, Alex’s sister.” She smiled.
“Good morning your Highness.” I greeted.
“Alice, you need to come with me to the market, I need your opinion on scarves.” She said.
“Coming!” Alice laughed before walking up to her.
“It was good to meet you, Jack.” She smiled.
“You as well.” I replied, breathless as to how kind she was.
“Well I guess we get to hang out till our knuckleheads are done. Don’t tell Sir Dorian I said that.” Daniel laughed making me erupt in giggles.
“Only if you don’t tell my knucklehead that I laughed.” I smiled back. We talked for a long time but eventually they had to go. I slept for a while but woke up when the sound of many footsteps filled the room. Then the Prince, along with all the knights, burst through the door. They were still all hot and sweaty from training but they had huge smiles. I’ll admit I was a bit nervous at first, seeing huge muscular men made me nervous anyway, but then the Prince caught my eye and gave me a reassuring smile making my heart rate speed up in a good way.
“Man you look like shit.” Sir Merrick laughed, ruffling up my hair. Everyone else either sat on the bed or stood near it. The Prince kept his distance and let the knights playfully tease me.
“Like you’re one to talk, look at your face!” Sir Dawson chimed making the other eight knights laugh.
“I-If you d-don’t mind me a-asking, b-but wh-what are you d-doing here my Lords?” I asked, trying my hardest not to stutter but failing miserably.
“We missed our muffin boy.” Sir Dawson smiled.
“Yeah I found out about your pastry sneaking habits.” The Prince laughed making me smile. The rest of the night was filled with teasing and laughter. I couldn’t believe they’d all come to see me, it seemed too selfish to even think such a thought. After a while, they all left and the Prince and I were left alone again.
“Sire, you really don’t need to do these things. I’m just a servant.” I said quietly.
“You’re more than that.” He said, sitting on the bed. I fixed my gaze on my lap which was hidden beneath many layers of blankets. “Why won’t you look at me?” He asked. I just shrugged. “Tell me.” He stated. I bit my lip, keeping the words from tumbling out but when he put his hand on my leg, I couldn’t help myself.
“Back in Rivguard, if I looked someone in the eye.” I broke off, trying to keep my voice steady.
“Tell me.” He encouraged.
“He’d make me sleep outside and I’d only be allowed little food for the rest of the day. He said I didn’t have the privilege to look someone in the eye.” I spat, not at the Prince, but at my old master.
“Listen to me. You are a person. And as long as you are my servant, you will be treated like one.” He said with a tone I wasn’t able to decipher. Then I did the unthinkable, I looked up. The Prince was staring at me with an unreadable expression. His eyes, which were to most an ordinary shade of brown, were the most extraordinary thing I’d ever seen. They were ridiculously deep brown with tiny gold flecks around the outer rim and grew impossibly dark towards the iris. Now I’d never believed in love before. I believed in the love between a parent and child, even if my parents abandoned me, but I’d never believed in love between two people because I’d been with so many men who were cheating on their wives. But now I knew I was wrong because I felt love. I wasn’t sure if it was the love a servant has for their master, the love that a person shares with their best friend, or if this was something so much more powerful, and forbidden but damn it all! I looked into the eyes of my Prince and I knew that I loved him.
