We Were Born To Lose
He Wears His Heart Safety Pinned To His Backpack
“King Bruce.” King Peter smiled. The alliance had been agreed between the Vincett and the Gaskarth kingdoms. All in all, the war against Cenrid hadn’t been too bad. Because of it, our kingdom had two new alliances which meant two kingdoms we didn’t have to worry about attacking us. King Bruce signed the treaty the day he and his family arrived, and King Gaskarth was now planning a ball to celebrate, King Lance was even coming up from the front to attend. Since we would be having such important compony, naturally the servants were all in a rush to clean the castle to the point where it was gleaming. Those working in the kitchen had a tough job to as they had to provide the finest meals every day. I was glad I wasn’t a house servant, since I was the Prince’s, I only needed to clean a small potion of my day.
I was standing behind my very bored Prince as the Kings discussed the details of the party but once his name was mentioned, we perked up.
“What?” Alex asked.
“You will attend the ball with King Vancett’s daughter, Princess Amelia.” King Gaskarth informed.
I saw the panic in his eyes but I couldn’t figure out the source of it. After all, it was just a dance.
“No!” He cried. King Peter gave his son a very hard look, “I mean, I can’t. I’ve already asked another lady.”
“You have? Who?” King Peter asked, intrigued.
“Sh-She’s the daughter of a nobleman. Her name is…Um… Jacqueline.” He answered, glancing at me. I almost face palmed then and there. ‘Lady Jacqueline’ who’s name does that sound like?
“Lady Jacqueline.” The King pondered.
“Oh well, some other time I suppose.” King Vancett shrugged.
After this they went back to discussing. My feet and back ached from standing so long and as soon as they finished, Alex hurried me to his room. I grabbed paper and hurriedly wrote.
‘Jacqueline? Really?’
“I’m sorry, I panicked!” He exclaimed.
‘Why? It’s just one dance!’
“If my father tells me to take a girl to a dance, it means court her. And if he wants me to court a girl, that means he wants me to eventually marry her.” He replied through gritted teeth, my breath escaped me. “Yeah you can see my reluctance.”
‘So who are you going to take?’ I wrote. How is he going to find a daughter of a noble man
named Jacqueline on such short notice?
“I’m looking at him.” He replied. My eyes went wide and I shook my head.
“Come on, Jack who else am I going to take?” He asked. I opened my mouth to protest but no sound came out so I just closed it and crossed my arms. “Come on no one will ever know it’s you! We’ll get a dress and a wig and we’ll get Cass to make you all…Girl like.” I shook my head again. “Well your other option is me being betrothed to Princess Amelia.” I glared at him for a moment before reluctantly nodding. Pretending to be a girl for one night was much better than him marrying someone else. “Great! You were probably not paying attention but the party is in two weeks so we have until then to teach you…Lady etiquette."
