We Were Born To Lose
But You Hold My Attention Without Even Trying
It had bee three days since Balthazar’s threat and every day got more and more tense, his stare grew hungrier and hungrier, and he grew closer and closer and there was nothing I could do about it. Even if I could talk, I wouldn’t say anything. There was no way in hell I’d ever risk Alex’s life, no matter what he did to me. I stepped closer to Alex when Balthazar entered the room. Alex had convened a meeting and they were discussing battle plans, county affairs, and things such as that. Balthazar kept glancing at me and smirking which made me step farther behind Alex. He didn’t seem to notice my unease but that was alright because he was here with me and that’s all I needed to feel safer. When they decided to end the meeting, I stepped even closer to Alex as everyone stood and shuffled around, gathering papers and things.
“Prince, may I have a word with you and Jack?” Balthazar asked making me taste the fear that flew into my stomach.
“Of course.” He replied, I tried to give him a look but he didn’t pay attention. “What is it?”
“Sire I received word from the front. They’re being forced to fall back.” He said.
“Fuck.” Alex whispered. This was not good. If we had to fall back, that meant the enemy had more troops than us, even with Lance.
“The King sent word to the Vancett kingdom, they’re allies with Lance and we may be looking at another alliance. The King said he’d brief you during dinner. I’ve gotta run though,” Balthazar looked at my when he said, “I’ll see you soon.”
Alex bade him a short farewell and then Balthazar turned and exited behind the rest of the knights. I let out a shaky breath once he was out of sight.
“Jack, come with me.” Alex ordered. By his tone, he didn’t sound too happy. I swallowed and followed him as we walked through the chilly halls. I wondered if it was ever going to get warm again when we passed an open window that was letting frigid air in. Alex threw his bedroom door open and stalked inside. I shut it behind me and pressed my back to it.
“What’s wrong.” He asked, looking to me with an expression I couldn’t read. I shook my head.
“Damn it Jack! Something is the matter!” He said, grabbing the paper and quill again and pushing them into my hands. I moved over to his desk and scribbled my reply,
‘Nothing is wrong.’
“Jack you’re more jumpy than you were when you came here the day I got you.” He said with a tone of annoyance. He wasn’t lying. My gaze was always darting around, keeping track of where everyone was in the room and what they were doing, I wasn’t talking, and I always seemed to shrink away. I sighed and wrote my reply,
‘Fine, you’re right. I’m just suffering from flashbacks and nightmares. It’ll pass, I promise.’
“Are you sure that’s it?” He asked doubtfully. He wasn’t buying my lie. If I wanted to convince him, I’d really have to sell it. I faked a grin and nodded, taking his hands and squeezing.
“Why can’t you talk then?” He asked. I shrugged and looked down. “It’s okay, Jack. You’re still perfect.” He smiled, tilting my head up by his fingers. My lips twitched up and my eyes locked onto his gold flecks. God how I’d missed them, how they light up when he’s happy, like right now, or how they darken when he’s angry. He placed a soft, gentle kiss on my lips and I kissed back as his words rang in my ears.
You’re still perfect.
