We Were Born To Lose
His Backpack Is All That He Knows
We set off before the sun was up. Luckily we already had troops stationed so we’d be arriving to a camp. The frigid air bit my nose and cheeks and I was glad I had my warm coat. The ride was long and tedious but I thanked god I had a horse. There were a few servants who had to walk, those servants being Matt and David. I was a little concerned for them because the trip was going to be very long and it would take several days to get there but if they couldn’t make it, I’d gladly give them my horse to ride. The sun had just cleared the horizon when we were about to enter bandit country. Alex halted us all and we dismounted to stretch or, in Matt and David’s case, rest our legs and eat something. I retrieved a bit of bread from my rucksack and bit into it. I walked over to the head of my horse and stroked his face. I was focusing on his soft fur under my fingers while he was very interested in my loaf. I giggled and broke off a piece for him since there wasn’t much grass around. He took it gladly and searched for more but he was out of luck since I’d shoved the whole thing in my mouth.
“Jack.” Alex called. I gave my horse another pat then jogged towards my master.
“Once we get into the woods, we’re in bandit territory. I want you to stay right next to me, don’t leave my side for anything.” He ordered.
“Yes, Sire.” I replied. After a few minutes of him talking with Sir Dorian, Alex ordered that we start. I slung my pack onto my horse and put my foot in the saddle but hoisting myself up proved to be more difficult than I’d anticipated due to riding all morning.
“Need help?” Sir Balthazar asked.
“Yes please.” I answered. I felt him place a hand on my lower leg and one on my waist and then he pushed me up easily. I had obviously underestimated his strength because his force was very smooth and strong.
“Thank you Sire.” I smiled. He grinned and then left to get his horse. I guided Carmer to Alex and halted next to him. He nodded then shouted that we were to begin. Stepping into the forest made us all tense up because we knew that at any moment, we could be ambushed by as many as five to a hundred men. A twig snapped and I everyone’s head wiped to look. But no one came barreling through the trees.
“Um, how long till we’re out of bandit territory?” Sir Balthazar asked.
“About ten miles.” Alex replied. I heard him mumble,
“Great.” Under his breath causing me to chuckle a little bit.
It seemed like centuries but it had probably been only two hours when all of a sudden war cries of what must’ve been fifty men surrounded us as they charged, we were evenly matched because our group was one of fifty. I unsheathed my sword and urged my horse into a gallop, heading straight for a man who was running towards Sir Merrick. I got there just in the nick of time and deflected the man’s blow which would’ve killed the Knight. Since I was on a horse, I had the advantage so I just easily stabbed the man in the chest, my guilt blinded by my rage of him trying to hurt my friend. By this point, Sir Merrick had turned around and he gave me a nod of thanks before charging towards another man. I scanned the brawl, looking for my friends. The knights were all alright, the Prince was fighting two men while on foot but I knew he could handle them by his relaxed expression and the fearful look in the bandit’s eyes. Then I realized there was one person unaccounted for… Matt was no where to be seen.
