We Were Born To Lose
They Say Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
A soft knock sounded at the door. I bolted awake and leapt out from under Alex. He was so exhausted from the emotional trauma he’d been through that he didn’t wake up. Yesterday we buried Lisa by a creek. She looked beautiful with white flowers surrounding her. I felt so terrible for poor Alice. She’d taken Lisa’s death as badly as Alex had. Luckily, she was able to serve a new knight named Sir Balthazar (his first name was Brian). From what I’d seen, he seemed nice. He was always kind to me. Another knock broke me out of my train of thought and I answered. The person before me made me freeze. It was the King. He was hunched over and his gaze was on the floor, just the broken shell of a man.
“When Alex wakes, tell him that I have sent a message to King Lance requesting a meeting and tell him that Cenrid will be out of here by tonight.” Then he turned around and left. I watched him walk down the hall, hearing heartbreak in his footsteps. I closed the door slowly and turned to see Alex looking at me with wide sad eyes.
“Did you-?”
“Yes.” He cut me off quietly.
“Do you want me to le-“
“No.” He gasped, suddenly looking very frightened. “Don’t leave. Please don’t leave me too.” He cried, wrapping his arms around his torso.
“Alex, hey, shh.” I rushed to his and pulled him into my chest. “I won’t leave you. I’ll never leave you.”
Alex and I were at the top of one of the guard towers and we watched the last of Cenrid’s men fall out of sight.
“Good riddance.” He spat. I looked over to him with a hint of confusion. He’d been pretty quiet all morning, I wondered what caused his mood to change so dramatically.
“Sire?”
“Don’t speak.” He snapped. “I’m so sick of all the noise!” He cried, his hands flying to the side of his head and his breathing grew ragged. I wasn’t sure what to do. I tentatively put my hand on his arm but he shoved me against the stone wall making my head smack against it. Stars flashed before my eyes and my vision went black. I blinked a few times and my sight cleared to see Alex sitting on the floor hyperventilating. Despite what he’d just done, I rushed up to him and pulled him into my arms.
“It’s okay, Lex. You’re okay.” I whispered other things of the sort into his ear and listened to his breathing even out.
“I’m sorry.” He murmured.
“I know. It’s okay.” I whispered.
