We Were Born To Lose
But Even Lights Can Fade Away
I should’ve said something. I saw them but I didn’t think anything of it…boy, I was wrong. Here’s what happened,
I was walking the halls of the castle, bringing a bunch of herbs to Mom when I saw Cenrid talking with some knights. I knew things were tight between the Kings because King Peter had outright denied King Cenrid’s demands. The knights were talking in hushed tones, I figured they were just discussing things in their own kingdom so I didn’t think anything of it. Then later that day when I was cleaning Alex’s room, there was a scream. We both exchanged panicked looks because we knew exactly who that scream belonged to. We dropped everything and ran to Lisa’s room. We burst through the door to see her delicate figure lying on the floor with a dagger protruding from her stomach.
“LISA!” Alex screamed and rushed to her side. He gently stroked her cheek as the tears streamed down his face.
“Shh Alex it’s okay.” She smiled, her voice small and soft.
“No.” He whispered. “No. You’re going to be okay. We’ll get Mom. Jack, get Mom.” He ordered. It was useless to hope Lisa would live but Mom might be able to ease her passing. I stuck my head out of the door and told a servant to get her. When I came back, Alex was doing his best to keep himself together. I knelt on the other side of Lisa, my own eyes filling.
“Who was it?” I asked quietly.
“I don’t know. It was Cenrid’s men though.” She spoke quietly. Alex let out a small gasp. I looked over at him to see tears streaming down his face, his back hunched in despair, and with one hand supporting Lisa’s neck and the other clasped around her hand.
“Lisa, dear?” Mom’s comforting voice filled the room.
“Hey.” Her voice was no longer soft or gentle. It was raspy and pained.
“Drink this.” She whispered.
She did as she said and relaxed a few seconds after.
“Mom save her.” Alex cried.
“I can’t-“
“PLEASE!”
“Alexander I have a knife in my gut. You should know more than anyone that I can not be saved.” Lisa said, her voice still horse but firm. “Jack, thank you.” She smiled warmly. I heard a small cry escape my lips and a tear fell onto my shirt. “Mom, I love you. And Alex, you’ll make a wonderful king.”
“Not without your guidance.” He pleaded.
“You have someone very wise close to you. Keep him there.” She whispered.
“Please don’t go.” He whispered but it was too late. Her eyes were empty. Alex didn’t make a sound. He just shifted her body into his arms and held her tight as he rocked her back and forth.
“I’ll inform the King.” Mom whispered in my ear. We sat in the room completely silent when the king burst through the door. He and Alex were crying their eyes out over the dead princess and I couldn’t bear to be there. I ran out and fled to Alex’s room with my own tears streaming down my face. I cast myself into his bed and wrapped myself up in the sheets. I hated that Alex was suffering. I wished I could take it all for him. I would miss Lisa so much. I hadn’t really talked to her except for the past few days but she was always kind. She’d always smile at me, she’d always thank me for doing something for her, she was never rude or mean in any way to me and for me, that was something new. I lay there till it grew dark then Alex stumbled in. I lifted my head from his pillow to look at him. He looked miserable with his red eyes, messed up hair, and ragged breathing.
“Oh Alex.” I whispered, holding my arms out. He fell into them and buried his face in my chest. I soothingly rubbed his back and whispered, “It’ll be okay, she’s happy now. She’s watching over you. You’re fine, I’m right here.” In his ear making him clutch onto me like a little child would their most believed doll.
