We Were Born To Lose
I Will Make You Queen Of Everything You See
We raced for a bit, she won three out of five races, then we decided to ride down to the creek. It was too cold to go swimming but we could collect rocks on the bank. She kicked off her shoes and squealed when the freezing water swirled around her toes and I struggled not to do the same. I scanned the water, spotting some tiny minnows in little groups darting around, and looked for pretty rocks.
“Jack!” She cried. I turned to see her holding up a smooth black stone with a light blue stripe through it’s center.
“Wow that’s beautiful.” I smiled. She giggled and we continued. After a while I found a stone that was almost red as blood and it also had a blue stripe.
“That’s gorgeous.” She grinned.
“I didn’t know this creek had such stones.” I said.
“I used to come here with Alex all the time. Once he was crowned, I couldn’t come as much since I have to have protection.” She said, examining my stone. My chest swelled with pride when I realized that meant she trusted me to protect her. “I sometimes sneak out and come here though, but you don’t know that.” She winked playfully. “Say Jack, I really love your rock. Do you think we could trade?” She asked.
“Of course!” I smiled and we exchanged stones. After this, we stood in the water completely still till the minnows came up and saw who could stand their ticklish nibbles the longest. I was clearly better at this because she could barely stand it when they came close. It started to get colder so we decided to leave the freezing water. As we rode, I told her about the lake in Rivguard and how I’d like to go there to get away and she told me about how she would sneak out to this creek whenever things got too hard. She lead me down a path I’d never been on before and we wound up in front of a massive tree. It’s trunk had to’ve been about twenty feet thick.
“I want to show you something.” She said as she dismounted. She showed me a series of knots and indentations in the tree that allowed a person to climb up. I followed her lead and stepped where she stepped and grabbed the branches she did, climbing for ages, going farther and farther up. Then everything started to get thinner. I stuck to the more sturdy branches close to the tree trunk while she, being much lighter than I, was able to stray to smaller ones.
“Almost there, come on.” She encouraged, climbing faster and I had to rush to keep up with her. Then all of a sudden, the foliage stopped and I looked forward. The view took my breath away. I could see the castle, the creek, the hill where Alex and I had taken me, and so much more land draped by the setting sun’s rays fanning out over the world.
“Wow.” I whispered.
“Yeah I know.” She grinned.
“How did you, a princess, find such places?” I asked.
“I don’t want to be someone who spends their life cooped up in a castle acting all ‘royal-like’ I want to be someone who does things and make memories.” She spoke. I breeze blew by, making her hair whip in the wind. If I hadn’t been gay, I probably would’ve fallen for her then and there.
“You said earlier you like to come to places like this when everything becomes too much, is that why you took me here?” I asked.
“I’m angry at father. I don’t see how he could have such prejudiced views!” She cried.
“Well at least the Prince shares our views.” I said.
“Our views?”
Shit
“So you agree?”
“I do.” I murmured. She paused for a moment, then asked a question that made my heart stop.
“Are you gay Jack?”
How does everyone know this?
“N-No.” I stuttered, mentally face palming myself.
“You are!” She laughed. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”
“I-I’m not.”
“Jack don’t lie to your Princess.” She laughed, “So that’s why you’re always looking at Alex.” She smirked. I felt my face go red, “For what it’s worth, he looks at you too.” The wind picked up the pace making us look up. The sun was almost past the horizon and Lisa suggested that we go back before it get’s too dark to climb down. After a long ride back home, we parted ways and I put the rock she’d traded me on my window sill.
