We Were Born To Lose
Look How She's So Serene
It had been a week and every single day, Alex went to his father. This day, it had been a particularly big fight and the King actually ordered that the Prince be locked in the cells overnight, so naturally, I sat next to the door to his cell all night.
I didn’t realize I’d fallen asleep until I heard soft footsteps. I jerked awake and felt a soft hand on my knee.
“Hey it’s okay. It’s just me.” Princess Lisa smiled warmly. She had a plate of food which I assumed to be Alex’s breakfast. I still stayed stiff considering she’s a royal and bowed my head to her.
“You’re sitting on the floor before me I think that counts as a sign of respect.” She giggled. I couldn’t help the smile that spread across my lips. “Is he awake?”
“No, my Lady.”
“Okay well then I’ll sit here till he is!” She said before sitting on the dirty floor. I admired her, she was kind, gentle, and soft but she had a certain attitude with her that showed she was strong. “So how is servanthood treating you?” She asked.
“It’s wonderful. I love every second of it. Prince Alexander really amazing to serve and-“
“Don’t mind me, Jack. Keep going.” Alex laughed from between the bars.
“Hey!” I laughed spinning around to see him shaking with laughter. Lisa giggled while pushing him his plate. We talked whilst he ate and it was amazing. Princess Lisa didn’t make me feel inferior. She was like a comforting older sister and she made me feel, dare I say, equal to her which was something I was not used to feeling. We stayed with Alex until a guard let him out and then Lisa invited me for a ride. After I’d gotten permission from Alex, I hurried to get our horses ready. Once on the peaceful trail, we fell into a comfortable silence.
“Where did you live before you came here?” Princess Lisa asked.
“I lived in Rivguard where I helped my master with an inn.” I said, reciting my cover story.
“He wasn’t kind was he?” She said with a gentle voice. I looked at her and she reminded me of a delicate snowflake or a thin piece of soft cloth that you were afraid of tearing if you touched it.
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“You’re afraid. You’re always afraid. When you serve us at dinner, you shake with fear. You’re always so frightened when you don’t need to be.” She said. I licked my lips. I knew there was no point in lying to her…mostly.
“No he wasn’t kind.” I murmured.
“I trust you’ve come to no harm here?” She asked. Thoughts of Alex slapping me, pushing me, punching me, yelling at me, and almost being raped filled my mind but I forced a smile and answered,
“No, my Lady.”
I could tell by the look on her face she didn’t buy it but she shrugged it off.
“Call me Lisa. “My Lady” is a mouthful.”
“Okay.” I smiled as I looked down.
“I bet I can beat you to the hill!” She teased.
“You’re on.” I laughed, letting myself go and urging my horse forward.
