Me Without You

Permanent. (Day 52)

I sat on the couch watching Ellen as a small child tugged at my jeans.
“I’m hungry.” They pouted and I rolled my eyes.
“You just ate. You can wait until dinner. It won’t be long.” On that note, I left the toddler playing with a set of wooden blocks and checked on the pasta which was baking in the oven. I took it out and sprinkled a decent layer of cheese on the top before placing it back in the oven and turning the heat down. A squeal came from the lounge as I sighed, wondering what she’d done this time. “Baby girl?” I wandered back into the room and bolted to the figure that stood holding my daughter.
“Hey, baby.” He wrapped me in his free arm and I buried my face into his neck, inhaling his scent. He placed an uncountable amount of kisses into my hair and I could feel our child stroking his face, she liked the feel of his stubble.
“You’re home.” I beamed as I kissed him. “I thought you weren’t coming home for another two weeks?”
“I got a break.” He smiled, leading us over to the couch and sitting us down. “I missed you so I came home as soon as I could.”
“How long are you here for?” I frowned, the visits while he was on tour were never long enough.
“Just tonight. My flight back to Ohio leaves at 12 tomorrow.” He placed yet another kiss on my hand and started to rub small circles on my shoulder with his thumb.
“That’s less than twenty-four hours.” I exclaimed and his smile faded.
“Yeah, I know. But I missed you and her so I booked a flight and came as soon as I was finished interviews.” I twisted around so I could reach my lips up to his. “I love you.” He murmured and I smiled against his lips.
“I love you more.”
“I love you most!” The little girl yelled, making us both chuckle. “But I’m still hungry.” I smiled at her and led them both into the kitchen. He slid the child into her high-chair as I retrieved the meal from the over and started to dish it up. “Hot.” The toddler whispered as she blew on her bowl.
“That’s right. Hot.” He smiled, running his fingers through her rapidly growing hair.

I lay on the couch in the back room of the bus, staring up at the roof. This was not happening. I glanced back towards the bathroom and groaned, throwing my hands over my face.
“For fucks sake.”
“What’s up buttercup?” Jack’s voice echoed around the room. The sudden noise made me jump and I glared at him.
“I thought you were watching the Orioles game.” I sighed, wanting him to disappear.
“We won.” Jack commented, lifting my leg and sitting himself under him. “Why do you look like the world just ended?” I panicked… what was I meant to tell him? I couldn't let him know, not yet, I didn't know what I was going to do myself. I shook my head and Jack took my hand, rubbing small circles into the back of my hand with his thumb. I had to give him one thing, Jack knew how to calm me down when I was internally freaking out. Another tick on the Jack list, he could tell when I was internally freaking out, and to my credit, I usually managed to keep it quite well hidden. “You won’t tell me, will you?” Jack asked and I gave him an apologetic smile. I couldn't tell him yet, I needed to accept it myself first. “You want Mike.” He stated before untangling himself from my legs and standing up. That boy could practically read my mind. He grabbed a chocolate chip muffin out of the small pantry and nuked it in the microwave before putting it on a plate with a handful of blueberries and placing it on my stomach.
“You’re pretty much perfect, you know that?” I giggled as I chowed down. Jack leaned against the wall, arms crossed against his chest, nodding.
“Yeah, I know.” He smiled. “I got you nailed inside and out Jasey-Rae. I’ll go find Mike for you.” I gave him a grateful smile and went back to finding patterns on the ceiling. I was screwed.

“Okay, care to shed some light on what’s the matter?” Mike appeared in the doorway and crouched down by my head.
“You know how you said I could have contracted herpes from sleeping with Jack?” I laughed as Mike sat back on his heels.
“Yeah? Jasey, what’s going on?” His face had dropped from a smile to a concerned frown and I knew he had caught on already.
“I think I contracted something a little more permanent.” I gazed blankly at the ceiling, not wanting to look him in the eye.
“How permanent?” Mike whispered, humouring me.
“Eighteen years and a college fund permanent.”

“JASEY!” Jess screamed as she ran into the room, Cass hot on her heels. “What!?” Cass instantly started pacing around the room and Jess held her hands on top of her head. “Mike had to tell us? You told Mike first!” I shrugged, not up to fighting about the current situation.
“What are you going to do?” Cass whispered, taking a seat. I shrugged again. Shrugging was great. It was such a non-committal gesture.
“Do you know whose it is?” I gave Jess a look.
“I’m not sure.” I whispered. I hated this, being unsure, it made me feel like such a slut.
“Whose could it be?” Cass had joined me in staring at the ceiling.
“Jack. Mike. Alex.” I sighed.
“Well, shit.” Jess mumbled, sinking to the floor. “This just made things worse.” Cass and I both nodded in agreement. There was no way out of this one. I was royally screwed. “Do you have any idea who you want now things have got an extra… aspect?” I sat up and looked between Cass and Jess.
“I saw my entire life with him like flash before me when the tests came back positive.” I sighed. “It was perfect. The house, the kid, the job. We had everything balanced between the band and home and… I don’t think I could do this with any of the others.” I couldn’t help but smile as I thought about the fantasy I had earlier.
“So,” Cass began. “We have a winner?” I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Yeah, I think we have a winner.” Cass and Jess high-fived in relief that the drama was about to be over.
“Care to share?” Cass giggled, poking me in the side. My face dropped, realising a flaw in my plan for happiness.
“Uh, shit.” I mumbled. “Guys, what if it’s not his?” Cass and Jess looked at each other and then back at me. Jess jumped up and grabbed a piece of paper and pen. Quickly writing up the three men’s names.
“Dates. Go.” I sighed and listed off the days I had slept with each ‘contender’. “Right, come on.” Jess grabbed her cell phone out and dialled a number.
“Who are you calling?” I questioned. No way was she telling anybody!
“The doctors in Towson. When we get in tomorrow we’re going straight there. We’ll find out how far along you are and from there we can figure out whose it is.” Cass nodded in agreement.
“It’ll be best if we could decipher who it is before we have to tell the guys. A paternity test could cause a sticky situation.” I nodded in agreement and smiled at my two friends.
“I do want to know who you’ve all of a sudden decided hold your heart though.” Jess teased and I zipped my lips.
“Tell me!” Cass screamed, causing Jack to come running into the room.
“Is everything alright?” He sounded worried. We all burst out laughing, Cass’ scream had sounded rather blood-curdling.
“We’re fine, JackJack.” I beamed. Cass and Jess quickly looked between Jack and I. Jack raised his eyebrows at the three women staring at him and quickly excused himself.
“It’s Jack!” Cass and Jess both laughed in a whisper. I blushed and hid my face in my hands.

@Evie
Ahh okay I get it :)

I really hope I didn't sound mean. If I didn't like your story I wouldn't have bothered. I just thought it was good enough for me to point out.

@we-forgot-monday
Hey :) I kind of wanted that to be the point. Jasey seems so perfect and everyone seems to like her so much that her downfall is how possessive she becomes over everyone. How they're her boys and no one else's unless she totally approves of them. I read a lot of fanfiction where the female is 'perfect' in a way and I wanted to try push that in a different way where her perfection and popularity is her downfall. For example, how she can't choose between Alex or Jack but still expects both of them to hang around for her and not move on, which ultimately all comes from her insecurity but we haven't got there yet ;) I'm starting to focus more on that side of the story now as its coming toward the end but I thought I should just put that out there and I'm really do apologise if it's unclear! The story did begin with a lack of character put into Jasey which I'm trying to slowly fix up through both the chapters coming up and the prequel.
Thanks for your comment!

I really don't mean to sound bitchy or mean but why does everyone like Jasey so much? What has she done? She seems kind of perfect, which seems kind of unrealistic. I haven't finished the story yet but does she have any flaws? Also why are they all her boys? Is no other female allowed to be a part of their lives but Jasey? This story is well written and there are certain parts of it that I really like, its just that those things don't really make sense. I really hope I didn't hurt your feelings or anything like that, because I am in no means a perfect writer, but I hope its like constructive criticism.

@Rebecca.Troy
Lets face it, there's never enough drama :)
