Guts

It was the semester test week and there was only one test everyone was looking forward to, Music! We had all been practicing hard and even practiced outside of school. Everyone was antsy for class to start. As soon as our previous class let out we raced to the music room to prep. We had no idea what to expect. Once we got to the music room there was a note on the board saying to go the auditorium.

We looked at each other and just shrugged. Once we got in there we were shocked. The stage had been set up like a real stage, there was a drum set, guitars (acoustic and electric), microphones, saxophones, and everything was there. Mr. Lee came out from behind the curtains and he did not look like Mr. Lee. He looked as though he had stepped out from an edition of Rolling Stones magazine. Also from behind the curtain stepped some more guys all dressed up in leather with face paint and before anyone could say anything they all grabbed and instrument and started playing. Once the song registered everyone raced to the stage.
The song? “Smokin in the Boys room.” The band? The one and only, Montley Crue. How had no one noticed that our teacher was Tommy Lee, drummer for Montley Crue?! Yannie was gonna beat himself up forever over this. But really he had cut off all his hair and got piercings and looked so different.

After the song everyone cheered and went crazy! It was awesome! Mr. Lee took the mic and told us it was our turn to perform. Each member would draw numbers for the order of performance. Jack and Jasey’s group were up first, “We Will Rock You.” Jack grabbed the guitar, Jasey grabbed a mic, and the rest of the group went to different places. Once they started playing Jack went into another world. It was so amazing to actually watch. He was all over the stage. Everything was going good until Jasey just ran off the stage. No one knew why, but without missing a beat Jack jumped to the mic and started singing. Everyone went crazy. After their song there was huge applause.

We were the third so we waiting on the other group to finish their song. When it was our turn I walked up to the mic. I was super nervous. I looked around for Jasey but she still hadn’t come back. My eyes settled on Maria and she winked and smiled at me. Jack was giving me the thumbs up. After everyone in my group was situated, we started (did I mention that there was a guy in our group playing sax?!). One of my female group members was singing with me and the other guy was playing bass. We killed “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone.” I was so ecstatic! It was always a rush performing. Next was Yannie’s group and “Cherry Pie.” I honestly don’t think I had ever seen Yannie drum so hard. It was amazing to see.

Last was Marias group, we had no idea what she was going to be doing. We were shocked when she grabbed a mic. I looked at Jack and he looked just as shocked as I did, he didn’t know she sung either. As the song started and she started singing we were all mesmerized. Her voice was so pure and soft. By the end of “Strawberry Wine” she had us all in tears. No one knew she could sing like that, and why hadn’t she told us?

Before we could ask her why she didn’t tell us she could sing she went to Mr. Lee and whispered something to him and he just smiled and nodded. He grabbed the mic and told us that there was another band to play by the name of NeverRock. We were frozen for a second. Did he just say our name? How did he even know?

Maria! She did this to us. We couldn’t perform in front of Montley Crue! We were glued to the ground, not a one of us moving or breathing. Maria ran down and grabbed us and drug us toward the stage. We were still in shock. Once on stage we came to our senses and realized we didn’t have a bass player. When Jack said that, Maria smiled and out behind the curtain and walked back out with Zack.

They were both grinning from ear to ear. Well damn now we had no excuse. We all agreed to play the new song, the one that I had dedicated to my brother. This would be the first time we played it in front of people, I was super nervous. I started out a little shaky, but by the middle I was totally into it and blocked everyone out and just felt the music.

By the time we were done a few of our classmates were in tears and the band members even gave us a standing ovation. We felt great! I looked around and still no Jasey, however Maria was smiling from ear to ear and looked so proud of herself. By this time it was the end of class and as we were leaving Mr. Lee held us back, and by us I mean Jack, Maria, Yannie,Zack, and myself. He told us we had done amazing and wanted to know if we would be okay with him talking to some of his record friends about us. Of course we said yes!

Not only had we just preformed MY song in front of everyone, had a killer last semester test, and told that we might get in touch with a record company, this was also the last day of the semester and we had a month off for Christmas! It was the best end to the semester ever!
So good I had completely forgot about Jasey. Little did I know what a huge mistake that would turn out to be….
