I woke up in the morning feeling unusual. My dreams had been quite weird but I felt strangely refreshed. I turned around to a surprise. Jack was beside me! I poked him gently to see if he really was there or whether it was an illusion. But he was real!

Yesterday’s happenings slowly came back to me. I cringed at the memory of how I had acted, crying in front of Jack and the others. How Jack had held me. The pill.

The medication explained why I had slept for… 12 hours?! Wow. I hadn’t slept more than 2 or 3 hours per night in the last weeks, let alone not sleeping at all for the past three days. I felt like a hunger had been satisfied. Plus, I had had no real nightmares. I smiled. Maybe these pills were all I needed.

Jack groaned and turned around to face me. He made squinty eyes at me, still half asleep. After looking at me for a few seconds, he smiled.

“Hi Lex. How do you feel?”

“Better, thank you so much,” I replied, making him smile a bit more. I loved to see that smile and without thinking, I pushed back an errant strand of his hair. I gazed deeply into his eyes before he blushed, broke away and cleared his throat.

“Um, did you notice anything of the… intermezzo with Matt?” he asked after a bit of a silence. What did he mean?

“No, what happened?” I asked back, a lump forming in my throat.

“He… he was a bit jealous about me helping you especially about being here in the bed with you,” he sighed.

“What do you mean by ‘a bit jealous’?” I requested to know. This was making me anxious.
“He – uh – kinda hit me a bit. But just a bit, no need to worry. He was very drunk,” he admitted.
Sickness started to build in my stomach. Jack had let Matt hurt him just to stay with me and protect me? It was really cute and heroic but I didn’t want him to get hurt because of me.

“Oh my God Jack! Are you ok?” I asked, sitting up to study him properly. There were no obvious signs of any injury so I was a bit relieved and he nodded and said yes to calm me down further.

“How dare he hurt you?” I said irritatedly. To be honest, I wanted to punch Matt myself for hurting my poor baby Jack.

Wait, what had I just thought??? Poor baby Jack? I flinched. I really needed to get this under control, these thoughts about Jack.

Luckily, the man I had thought this about hadn’t noticed anything but instead he started talking.
“I think he is just jealous of us. He thinks we are… closer than we are and this made him feel like he was inferior and you know Matt, he always wants to control and be the most important.”

This gave me a tiny sting. I knew I should give up all hope about anything happening between the two of us but still.

“I will get up now if it is ok with you, do you want something to eat?” he offered. I smiled, was so caring. I nodded and he left. I lay there, thinking about what had happened when I remembered the pills. Quickly, I searched for them in his pants’ pockets which he had left here. Nothing. I’d ask him when he was back.

“Jack? Do you still have the other pills?” I inquired while taking my poptart and my hot chocolate from him. He furrowed his eyebrows before answering.

“Yeah. I can give them to you, but promise me you’ll be careful with them. They are nothing to play with.”

I rolled my eyes. “Jack, how old do you think I am? I am a grown man, I know how to take medication.” He held the bottle out and finally gave it to me. I clutched it tightly. This would be my best friend from now on.
