The smell of cheap alcohol was overwhelming. I breathed shallowly. The panic was suffocating me. He brought his face closer to mine and squinted. I felt like a little mouse that was cowering in a hole in the ground, hoping the predator would not notice it.

But I was not that lucky.

“You! What are you doing here?” Matt slurred, spraying me with saliva. He grabbed some of my hair and pulled me closer. “This is my boyfriend! You… you stay away from him!”

I nodded fearfully and he shoved me back onto the bed. He delivered a kick to my stomach, slapped me in the face and spit on me before staggering away. I breathed out.

Alex had not reacted at all during the event.

I had been lucky. I was shaking but nothing on my body hurt too much. I waited until Matt was gone before slowly making my way to the bathroom.

Washing my face, I shuddered at the coldness of the water. I dried myself off and went back to the bunk. Alex was sleeping peacefully. I snuggled close to him and dozed off.
