"I don't mean to be a bother."
Jack’s POV
As I walked up to my locker, I saw Dawn get pushed into it face first. She normally didn’t get pushed into like that. I looked and saw that it was one of the jocks. Of course. “Are you ok?” I asked her. She didn’t answer back. Instead, she just walked past me towards our first period class. I should have figured that she would just brush whatever I saw off. I did date the girl that makes her life hell. A sigh fell from my mouth as I started to get my things out of my locker. The entire time, I felt like I was being watched. It was probably Lily. She is so annoying.
When I had what I needed, I headed to my first period class. I didn’t sit in my normal seat today. I went all the way over to the other side. There was no way I was sitting next to Lily. Of course, I still had a nice view of Dawn if I just glanced behind me. She was sitting a couple of seats away from me. I will never know why she sat towards the middle. Maybe... maybe she was listening to everyone talk about her. I noticed that when the entire class was or Lily was doing it a lot. She would pull out a notebook and start writing. I never was able to see what she was writing, but it looked like it was written like a poem was. I mean, it could have been a song for all I knew, but I had never seen her even listening to music. Although, she kept to herself because everyone judged her.
Our sub came walking into the room. I sighed when I saw that it was the older lady. She always falls asleep and lets the class do whatever. I didn’t mind get a break once in awhile, but her being here just meant that Dawn was going to get bullied more. I really hated seeing that happened to her, and it was always at the top level when there was a sub like this.
Most of the time we have a sub like this, the jerks will start trying to pick a fight with Dawn. I have actually seen it, so I knew the rumors were true. When Dawn was in 6th grade, her parents put her in a karate class just incase she was forced into a fight. She was really good too. When I saw her walk out of the building, I saw that she was wearing a black belt. I had also heard that she was the best in her class. That was why she was respected by kids from schools around us.
I was surprised when people were only throwing paper balls at her and talking about her. As it started to pick up more, I glanced back and saw her pull her notebook out. It really did look like she was trying to listen to everyone. When or if I get on good terms with her, I’m going to ask her what she writes in there. It just made me so curious.
“Hey Jack,” the guy, who’s nam I couldn’t remember, sitting next to me said, “did you really break up with Lily?” It’s aready started.
“Yeah, I did,” I answered.
The guy and his friends looked completely shocked. “Why? You guys have been going out for I don’t know how long, and she’s fucking hot!”
“She’s not all that pretty, and she’s a complete bitch anyway.”
“What do you mean?” another one asked.
“It doesn’t matter anymore and maybe it’ll annoy her, so I’ll tell you. She was always trying to change who I am. She would be like ‘Jack you should be on the football team or the basketball team’. I’m not athletic obviously, but she would always bug me. She even tried to get me to quit the band.”
“We’re not even friends, and I know that you would never do that.”
“She even wanted me to stop being friends with Alex, Zack, and Rian too. There is no way that I would stop being friends with them for that blonde tramp. Oh, that’s another thing. She was cheating on me too. She didn’t have to tell me that for me to find out. I saw her making out with this other guy!”
“Wow, I would have broke up with her too,” the first one agreed. “I heard that you broke up with her for a different reason though. Is it true that you broke up with her because you have a thing for Dawn.”
“Who told you that?”
“It’s going around.”
“Oh, I didn’t want everyone to know without me telling everyone.”
“So it’s true?” I nodded. “I seriously can’t believe that you like her.”
“Why? She’s never mean to anyone. She was always silly and goofy. I don’t know why people didn’t want her as a friend. Plus she’s gorgeous.”
“But she cuts. I’ve seen the scars.”
“Everyone has a flaw. No one is perfect. Last time I checked, I have a huge nose and big eyebrows.”
“Now that I think about it, she actually is pretty. If everyone didn’t start making fun of her at such a young age, she definitely wouldn’t be made fun of now. If she was a new kid, she’d probably be popular. Hey, where is she going?”
Dawn was getting a pass from the sub and walking out the door. “I don’t know. I’m going to follow her though.” I went up to the sleepy sub. “May I go to the bathroom?”
She nodded and pointed to the pile of passes before falling asleep again. I kept my distance like some kind of spy. I was like James Bond. Haha. I followed her outside to the bleachers. Dawn sat down, got her notebook out, and did something that I didn’t know she could do. She sung.
“Darkness is filling my head,
I’m just laying in this bed,
Doing nothing but dying,
But you still won’t leave me alone,
So I’m left here crying.
You’ve caused blood to drip down my wrist,
I’m using the blood to make a list,
Of everything that you’ve done to hurt me,

When I finally am not scared,

There isn’t a single prayer for me.

She does deserve it after all. “You’re really good.” Dawn got up and just walked past me. I had to tell her how I feel. “I’m sorry for everything she has said to you.” Fuck. That was not what I wanted to say. Dawn just kept on walking. She didn’t even turn back to look at me. I should have figured. This was no story. I was not going to get the girl.
