"I've got no place in my heart for a criminal like you to dwell."

Jack’s POV
There she was, writing something down on paper as she tapped her foot to an unknown beat. That brunette was the most hated girl of the school. I never understood why. It was like she was always the lowest one. It wasn’t like she was mean. No, I could tell that she was kind-hearted just by looking into her hazel eyes. So, why did people pick on her? I understand why they would now. She was an easy target now. I don’t understand why back then though. She was funny and silly. She was the kind of person that I wanted to be friends with. However, I was unable to because of the idiots that I was friends with at that time. Her name was Dawn Fox.
I was currently sitting with my annoying girlfriend, Lily. I don’t even remember why I dated her in the first place. Maybe it was because she seemed to be nice when I met her. Well, now I know that she’s a complete bitch. Lily was always telling me where to go and who to hang out with. I remember the huge fight we had when she wanted me to dress more like a jock and try out for sports. She was a cheerleader. I told her that if she wanted me to where something else, she wouldn’t have a boyfriend anymore. It may have seemed harsh because it was just clothes, but it was truly my lifestyle. She didn’t like the fact that I was a guitarist in a band. Why she wanted to date me in the first place was a mystery to me.

Lily was doing it again. She flipped her blonde hair before starting to make fun of Dawn. “She’s probably a les. I bet she hangs out with all the other whores and licks them all over.”

That was it. I was sick and tired of her making fun of that beautiful brunette. I was finally going to speak up. “You shouldn’t be making fun of her.”

Lily looked at me with a confused face. “Why shouldn’t I make fun of her? She’s just some pathetic emo kid.”

“Maybe she’s only like that because you and the whole school make fun of her.”

“Whatever. This conversation is over.”

I knew for a fact that it wasn’t over. She would just bring it back up later when we were alone. I turned my head to look at Dawn again and saw that she was watching me. As soon as I started to stare back, she turned her head away. I couldn’t tell if she liked that I stuck up for her or not. Of course, knowing that I’m Lily’s boyfriend, she’ll probably just dismiss it. I wished that she would see that I’m actually a nice guy, and I’ve never made fun of her before. Of course, I’ve never tried to stop other people, so maybe I wasn’t all that good. I paid attention to her for the rest of class.

When class was over, I went to my locker to grab my books. I really hated homework, and our stupid math teacher gave us a ton. Sometimes I just wanted to yell and pull my hair out in class and... Dawn was next to me. I couldn’t take my eyes off her as she pulled out her jacket and started getting her books. I liked how her bangs hung in her face and her eyes... Wait. She’s looking at me. I quickly turned away with some blushing. I can’t believe that I just did that. Did I really want her to know the secret that I’ve had for years?

“We need to talk.” I knew that it was Lily, and I knew that she was pissed off.

I didn’t want to deal with this right now especially in front of Dawn. With no emotion, I continued to grab my books as I spoke. “Then talk.” I knew that would make her even more angry, but I didn’t care anymore.

“Why don’t you get your ugly ass out of here, so I can talk to my boyfriend?”

I knew she was talking to Dawn, and she had no right to do that either. I looked away from my stuff to see her walking away towards the doors. I turned to Lily to find her red lips were in a smirk. She better have liked that because that smile is going away. “Don’t talk to her like that. She’s never done anything to you.”

“Excuse me? Do you know who that was?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Then why are you sticking up for her. You were doing it earlier too.” Her finger was pointing at my chest before pushing it against me. I swept it away, which made her even more ticked off. “Who the fuck do you think you are?!”

“I’m Jack Barakat, a guy that’s actually nice!”

“Bullshit! You’re my boyfriend, and you’re going to do what I say!”

“No, I’m not! I’m not your boyfriend now, and I don’t even know why I dated you in the first place!”

“Maybe it’s because I’m a lot prettier than that slut.”

“Don’t you dare call her that! You just wish that you were more attractive than her.”

“So you think that having scars on your arms is attractive? What are you going to become like her now?!”

“No, but I’m not going to let you push either one of us around anymore?! You know what else?! I know you’re cheating on me! I saw you making out with some other guy! Who's the slut now?!”

She pushed me down before storming off. I hadn’t been so proud of myself in so long. I actually stood up against her. I couldn’t help but smile at just the thought of what happened. I picked myself up and grabbed my books out of my locker before heading over to Rian’s for band practice, skipping part of the way. Why wouldn’t I skip? I was finally free of that blonde demon.

“Come on in,” Rian told me after he opened the door. He had this mop like brown hair. “We were just about to start without you.”

I walked inside and started towards the basement. “Sorry, it took longer than normal. I was doing something important.”

“Since when do you do stuff that’s ‘important’?”

“I’ll tell you after we practice.”

“Of course.”

The two of us walked down the stairs to find our other bandmates Alex and Zack. Alex was almost my height. He had carmel hair and brown eyes. Now that I thought of it. How did I get Lily? I was nothing compared to Alex and some of the other guys at our school. Zack had dark hair that was long for a guy, and was fit. He was one of those guys that liked working out. I will never understand that.

“I have something to tell you guys after practice today,” I smiled.

“Did you get laid?” Alex bluntly asked.

“No. It’s...almost as good as that.” I laughed at my own joke. “Seriously though, it’s really awesome.”

“Well, let’s hurry up and play!”

I picked up my guitar, which I had left there from yesterday’s practice. My fingers strummed each note to see if it was in tune. It was, so I looked over at the guys to find them ready as well. Rian hit the drum sticks to the beat before we all started. I looked over at Alex to find him deep in the song. I wish that I could sing as well as him. He was amazing.

When we finished practicing, I sat down upstairs with the rest of them. It almost seemed like they forgot that I had news to tell. They were just sitting there, relaxing. Maybe I should remind them... “I have news to tell you guys.”

“Oh yeah,” Zack spoke. “I almost forgot. What is it?”

I took a deep breath with the grin still on my face. “I’m single!”

“How is that good?” Alex asked. “Did Lily break up with you?”

“No! I broke up with her! I’m free from that demon!”

“Why did you break up with her? Was she trying to get you to stop acting like yourself and quit the band?” Rian questioned.

I shook my head. “She was making fun of Dawn, and I got sick of it.”

“Wait. As in Dawn, the chick that the whole school makes fun of?” Alex looked confused.

“Yeah, her.” I nodded.

“Why would you stand up for her? Nobody does. The nice people don’t even do that or the teachers.”

“Well, I’ve never told you this before. You weren’t in our school, so you wouldn’t know that she was picked on just as bad as when she was a kid in Kindergarten. I, um, I wanted to be friends with her when I was in her class. She was very happy and hyper and nice. Dawn was like the type that you would want as a friend. However, some people didn’t see that and started making fun of her. I don’t remember why. It might have been what she was wearing. I wanted to stand up for her then, but the friends I had wouldn’t let me, so I just left her alone. Over the years, I would glance over at her just to look at her, and I never made fun of her. When I was finally old enough to realize it, I found out that I...I like her.”

Notes

First off: Just a reminder that this is a prequel!
I don't know what to write in the next chapter, so I might just have that flashback from Time-Bomb as the next two chapters. Oh look I updated on Alex's B-Day. I made a cake with his face on it and drew a pic of him in charcoal as well. It's a good thing that I don't fangirl over him like I do Jack...
Anyway...time for thank yous...
