Drawn To Each Horizon

Twenty Five

Olivia POV:

Oh joy, it’s New Years. That time of the year when everyone has an excuse to get drunk and do whatever they feel like because, new year, new you. Might as well fuck shit up because there’s no way it’ll get back to you later. Then there are resolutions. Have I mentioned that’s the best part? Yep. Telling yourself that you’ll do something next year and you usually never get around to it. Like, losing weight, or promising yourself that you’ll finally clean out the garage. But hey, things are going to be different right? Probably not.

“Ready to go?” Alex was taking me over to Jack’s house to watch the ball drop, which was only three hours away. Everyone was going to be there, band, crew, friends.

“Yep,” we walked out to the car together and drove over to Jack’s place.

“Hey guys,” Jack greeted us with a big hug.

“Hey Jack,” I laughed.

“Jack, dude,” Alex smiled, “Where’s the booze?”

“On the counter, help yourself.” He went into the kitchen with Alex. I went into the living room to see Cassadee and Matt’s new girlfriend.

“Hey Olivia,” Cassadee pulled me into a hug.

“Hey.” I returned her hug.

“Oh, Olivia, this is Cristina.” Cassadee introduced us.

“Nice to meet you.” I smiled politely.

“You too,” she returned my smile.

“So how long have you and Matt been dating?” I tried to make a nice conversation.

“About a month now,” she told me.

“Oh really?” Cassadee asked. “I thought it was longer than that.”

“Nope, time is going by so slow.” She laughed.

“That’s how it feels with me too.” I said.

“Hey, gives you time to savor every moment, right?” Cassadee nudged me.

“Ugh, but time goes by too slow when he’s on tour.” I shrugged.

“That’s one thing I’m not looking forward to.” Cristina ran a hand through her hair.

“But when they come home it’s that much more worth it.” Cassadee assured her.

“True.” I agreed. “Hey, do you guys want to get some drinks?”

“Oh sure, Rian was making margaritas.” Cassadee walked into the kitchen and we followed. Sure enough, Rian was pouring some liquid from a blender into some glasses. He handed the first one to Cassadee and kissed her on the cheek.

“Thanks Ri,” she blushed.

“Hey sis,” he hugged me before giving me a drink.

“Hey, thanks.” I smiled.

“And here you go Cristina,” he handed her a drink.

We all went back into the living room while Matt and the guys started to discuss the upcoming tours starting next year. Alex would be gone for months at a time with only a few days in between to visit. Luckily, our vacation would fall in those days. Cass was used to it but I was just getting used to having him around and now the world was prying him out of my grip. But at least I’m not like Cristina who literally just got into this crazy mixed up life. Being a bad girlfriend is hard, but without the constant effort you put in, you won’t have a great relationship. And I think I’m doing a damn good job of that.

But like I said before, New Year, new you. Even if I put in a lot of effort before, I would have to put in even more now that I won’t get to see him as often, which is also going to bring struggles of not knowing what he’s doing while he’s out traveling. I’m not worried about the parties so much as I am about the constant attention women are giving him. You could say that I’m jealous, and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong, but women are relentless. And no, I don’t mean the fans entirely, but women in general. I can’t say that I’m not one of them because I did go after a taken man, but he wasn’t happy in his relationship. That does make me a home wrecker so I guess I am being hypocritical right now. Even if I am, this year Is going to be really important in our relationship and I want to make sure that we make it through the tough touring times.

“Hey Olivia, are you okay?” Cristina shook me out of thoughts.

“Oh yeah, I was just thinking.” I shook my head and tried to wave the thoughts away.

“About what?” Cass pulled me back into my ranting thoughts of Alex and the wonderful world of long distance relationships.

“Just about the boys traveling next year.” I sighed. “It’s going to be tough considering that we started dating when he had a lot of free time.”

“I’m not going to lie,” she set a hand on my shoulder, “At first it’s terrible and you feel really homesick without them, trust me, they go through the same thing. But after a while, you get used to it and each time is painful to let go, but it isn’t always as bad as it seems. Some say it gets worse, but for me it’s only gotten better. I’m only sharing from experience.”

“The ball’s about to drop!” Jack jumped gleefully in front of the TV with Matt following in his pursuit. We all gathered around them to watch the event. The countdown started from 10 and we all counted along with it until it finally got to one. I felt a pair of arms drape around my waist.

“Will you be my New Year’s kiss?” Alex whispered in my ear. I turned around so I was facing him. He had a smug little smile and his eyes were locked on mine. My hands held onto his shoulders as I pulled him in for a quick kiss. He seemed surprised when I pulled away after a few seconds.

“Is that really how you’re going to start the New Year?” He pouted.

“Yes, now c’mon baby, we have to go take care of our puppies.” I poked his nose. He had a huge smile on his face, one I couldn’t wipe off if I tried.

“What is it?” I asked. He just laughed and kissed my nose.

“What?” I demanded to know.

“You said ‘our’ dogs.” His smile got even bigger, I’m not even sure how that’s possible.

“And?” I questioned. We both take care of them, I do most of the time since he’s always touring, and I have to go out and buy stuff for them. So in a way, I am their new mommy.

“You’ve always said ‘the dogs’ or ‘your dogs’ but you’ve never claimed them as your own.” He laughed and grabbed my hand. I’m still not sure what the big deal is.

--

We drove back to his house with the soft sounds of the radio playing in the background. Everyone was surprised at how early we were leaving the party. I mean it was only a little after midnight, but I was busy and we were going to see Alex’s parents tomorrow to ring in the New Year. I don’t think he took Lisa over to their house as much because his parents always seem so excited to see us. I mean, I love them and they’re great, but why are they always so happy? Besides, I had only visited them twice before but this time was going to be a surprise. Alex told me that we were going to go over there before noon and spend the entire afternoon with them so we could all get even better acquainted. Although, I have to admit, I feel like I can already call them family.
