Sweet Goodbye

Twelve

I rolled onto my back, and opened my eyes. It was dark, except for a faint light coming from the hall. I pulled the blanket up to my chin and curled up against the wall, hoping that I wouldn't get another midnight beating. Memories suddenly filling my head, I calmed down a bit. I was at Jack's house. I was safe here. I pushed the blankets off me, and got up out of the bed, stretching. I went to the door, opening it every so quietly, and poked my head into the dim litted hallway. I made my way down the hall, tiptoeing by the bedrooms as quiet as I could. When I almost made it to the safety of the bathroom, one of the doors opened. I stopped, turning to see who it was.

"Lex, what are you doing up? It's 3 a.m." Jack asked, his voice raspy. It made my knees feel weak.

"I had to go to the bathroom." I whispered, tugging at the bottom of my shirt. Jack chuckled.

"You walked right by it." Jack said, pointing to one of the doors. I thanked, him and went in, closing the door behind me. I stood in front of the sink, looking at myself in the mirror. I frowned at my appearence, not liking what I saw. I looked away, sighing, not wanting to see myself anymore. I ran the water, to make it sound like I was doing something, and then dried my hands on the towel. After leaving the bathroom, I made my way back to where I was staying. As I walked by Jack's room, I heard Blink-182 playing softly, so I decided to peek in to see what he was doing.

"Jack?" I asked softly, as he came into view. He used to pillows to prop himself up, as he typed on his computer. He looked up, when he heard my voice, a smile appearing on his face.

"Hey, Alex. Are you alright?" He asked, setting the computer off to the side. He looked suddenly concerned. I shrugged, rubbing the back of my neck.

"No, not really." I said truthfully. Jacks smile faltered as soon as the words left my mouth. He climbed out of his bed, making his way over to me.

"What is it?" He asked, worry lining his voice. I shrugged, not wanting to talk about it. He put his hand on my shoulder, and dropped down so he was eye level with me. "You can tell me anything, Lex. What's wrong?" He asked, searching mine for any kind of hint.

"It's nothing." I lied. Jack obviously wasn't buying it, and I knew he wouldn't let it go.

"Come on, Lex. Please tell me." He asked, letting his arm fall back to his side. A frown made it's way to his face. I sighed.

"I'm so worthless, Jack. I don't know why you're being so nice to me. I'm only going to let you down in the future, like I did everyone else." I said, looking down at my feet. My throat began to burn, as tears filled my eyes. The truth in my words hurt so much, and I knew that Jack probably thought the same thing. I felt his hand return back to my shoulder, as he pulled me into him, hugging me tightly.

"Lex, you're not worthless. Don't listen to those people." Jack said. His grip loosened, and I took it as a chance to get free entirely. It wasn't that I didn't like it, but it made me want to cry.

"Thanks, Jack. I'm really tired though, so I'm going to go back to bed." I said, turning to leave. Jack grabbed my hand, pulling me back.

"Well, why don't you stay in here. You can sleep in my bed, and I can make a bed in the floor." Jack said. I didn't want to be alone, so I nodded.

"I guess I could stay in here." I said, a smile playing at the corner of my lips. Jack got some blakets from his closet, and laid them out on the floor. Taking one of the pillows from the bed, he dropped it onto the made up bed.

"You have the bed." He said, smiling as he got down on the make-shift bed, pulling the covers up to his neck. I climbed into the already warm bed, and laid near the edge so I could see Jack. He smiled up at me, and I smiled back.

"Thanks." I said, my eyelids beginning to get heavy. Jacks brow furrowed.

"For what?" He asked, confusion on his face.

"All of this. For letting me stay here." I said, yawning. Jack smiled, as he reached up for my hand. I let him take it, as he intertwined our fingers.

"What are friends for?" He asked. I nodded, and smiled. It didn't take long, but sleep finally consumed me, Jack and I still hand in hand.
