Sweet Goodbye

Eleven

The next morning, Alex didn't meet me at the end of my driveway, so I walked to school alone. I didn't think anything of it. The walk was boring without his company, so I listened to my Ipod. I sang a long to Blink-182 the whole way to school. English class was the worst on this particular day, and Alex wasn't there to make the day better. I was forced to work on our project alone. I didn't know what to write, so I drew instead. The class went by slowly, as did the rest of the day. After school was let out, I took the liberty of getting the assignments that Alex missed, and decided I would bring them to his house and tell him the good news.

The walk there was strenious. The extra books weighing my bag down. My Ipod died halfway there, so I had nothing to keep me company. I finally reached his house, stepping up on to the porch and knocking on the door. I waited, and listened for the sound of people inside. It didn't seem like there was anyone, so I turned to leave. As I reached the last step, I heard the door open. I looked back over my shoulder to see a woman, with sunken in eyes. Her dark hair was a mess, and she had a bruise just above her jaw line.

"I-Is Alex home, I have the work he missed today." I asked, nervously. The woman shook her head weakly, and her eyes grew sad. "Do you know where I can find him?" I asked, beginning to worry. She didn't say anything, so I took it as a no. "Well, thank you." I said, turning to leave once more.

"He.. He's at the General Hospital." The woman squeaked, bareley audible. I stopped, my jaw dropping open. I spun around, almost loosing my footing.

"W-What? Is he alright?" I said, my words stringing together, making the sentance almost non-understandable. The woman only shrugged, and I began to run in the direction of the hospital. "Thank you." I yelled over my shoulder, as I ran as fast as I could.

I stood in front of the large building, hoping that Alex was alright. Taking a deep breath, I advanced forward. As I entered the lobby, the disgusting smell of latex hit me, making me feel neaseous. I stopped in front of the front desk, where a lady was typing away on the computer. She smiled up at me, and stopped.

"Can I help you?" She asked, rolling from the computer. I nodded slightly, and smiled weakly.

"Uh, can you tell me what room Alex Gaskarth is in?" I asked, my voice shaking. The woman looked at me, concern filling her face.

"Are you related to him?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. I hesitated a moment, and then nodded.

"Yeah. H-He's my brother." I lied. I don't think she bought it, but she told me the number anyway. I thanked her, and rushed to the stairs. I didn't want to take the elevator, I had to keep moving. I reached the fifth floor, reading the numbers as I passed by room after room. I finally reached his room, 318, and knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" Alex asked weakly, making my stomach lurch.

"It's me, Jack." I said, stepping into the room. Alex's eyes immediately lit up. I quickly made my way to his bed side. "What happened?" I asked him, sitting down.

"My dad." He croaked. I closed my eyes, and sighed.

"A-Are you going to be alright?" I asked, pushing the anger to the back of my mind. Alex nodded, and smiled weakly.

"Yeah, I'm being let out at four." He said. "But, I don't have anywhere to go." He said sadly, looking at his hands that were folded on his stomach.

"My mom said you could stay with us for a while." I said, Alex's smile returning to his face. it was a real, genuine smile. My favorite kind.

It was finally time for Alex to leave the hospital. My mom came and picked us up, both of us helping Alex into the car. The ride home was silent, no one daring to talk. At home, I showed Alex to his room, which was all made up to my surprise.

"My mom must've put your room together today, while I was at school." I said, grinning. Alex smiled, sitting on the bed.

"Tell her I said thank you for all of this." He said tiredly. I nodded.

"You look tired, get some rest." I said, smiling. Alex nodded, and smiled back. He got under the covers, and pulled them up to his chin. "We're staying home tomorrow." I said, leaning down and kissing his forhead. He hummed with delight. As I turned to leave the room, he grabbed my hand, pulling me back.

"Can you stay in here, until I fall asleep?" He asked, innocently. I smiled, and nodded.

"Yeah, of course." I said, sitting at the bottom of the bed, resting my back and head against the wall. I rested my hand on Alex's leg, and began to hum the tune of Adam's Song, by Blink-182. By the time I reached the chorus of the song, Alex was snoring. It was the most adorable sound ever. I quietly got up from the bed, planting a kiss on his cheek, and then tiptoeing out of the room. "Goodnight, Lex." I whispered, pulling the door closed behind me.
