Destroy Rebuild
Twenty One
I paced around the kitchen, my hands shaking from the mixture of panic and rage coursing through me as I dialed Alex’s number. Once I’d successfully punched in the right digits, I pressed my phone to my ear as I leaned against the island, my fingers tapping rapidly against the countertop.
When I got his voicemail, I groaned and hung up before redialing. It seemed like it rang forever, and after getting his voicemail a second time, my stomach churned. I tried again, and while I was waiting with hopeful anticipation that he would answer, I realized what I’d put him through the night before. It wasn’t all that fun being on the receiving end of a silent treatment.
When I got his voicemail the third time, I exhaled heavily as I waited for his greeting to end so I could plead my case.
“This isn’t very fair, Alex. I gave you your chance. I think it’s only right that you give me mine. Please call me back. I love you.”
I placed my phone on the counter and pulled one of the barstools from the island. I sat and waited, hoping for a response for what seemed like forever before I got tired of staring at the black screen. As I was about to reach for my phone to call him again, I faintly heard muffled cries coming from Will’s room. I slid off the barstool and hurried to him, tucking my phone in my back pocket just in case.
“Hey, sweet boy,” I whispered as I scooped him into my arms and held him close against me.
He cooed and gurgled against my chest, gripping the fabric of my shirt in his tiny fists before laying his head against my collar bone. It felt like he was hugging me, and my overdramatic mom brain almost had me convinced that he knew everything that was happening and how badly I needed an embrace. I held onto him tighter as I sat easily in the rocking chair in the corner of his room.
He lifted his head and although he was offering me a wide grin with his shining green eyes, I couldn’t help but suddenly feel horrible.
“I’m sorry mama made a mess of everything,” I said quietly with a frown.
Will’s smile faltered for just a second before growing even wider. He had no idea what was going on in his precious little world, and I just hoped Alex and I would be able to fix it all before he developed enough to start catching on.
I felt my phone buzz from my back pocket and my heart leapt into my throat. I fished it out and eagerly opened my phone to read the text I’d received from Alex.
Jack will come by tomorrow to pick up my things for tour and he’s bringing your stuff
I furrowed my brows as I read it again before responding.
What stuff of mine? Where are you?
It felt like an eternity had passed before my phone vibrated again.
Don’t worry about it
I scoffed before angrily typing back.
Don’t worry about it? What the fuck does that mean Alex. So that’s just it? You’re going to leave for three months without trying to fix this first? Without saying bye to Will?
I huffed as I pressed send. He did have a good excuse to be mad at me, but he had no right to make our son pay for it.
Trust me, I will see him before I go
And me?
I can’t say I was surprised I didn’t get a response to that one, but I also can’t say it didn’t hurt.
