What's My Age Again?

My mom and I were sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast together. It was Sunday morning and she didn't have to work today. We were supposed to go shopping today to look for a birthday gift for May but neither of us wanted to go get dressed, well I didn't at least. May's birthday was tomorrow so we had to go today and find her the perfect gift.

My mom had asked me to look up gift ideas on Pinterest, but instead I was on my phone trying to think of a way to start a message to Alex. I had listened to a few of All Time Low's songs last night and I wanted to let him know. I didn't text him last night because I was tired when I got off YouTube at three am. I listened to their most popular song which turned out to be 'Dear Maria Count me in,’ some songs off of their older CD, and a few songs off their newest cd called 'Don't Panic.'

I stared at the blank text field and typed different greetings to see which one sounded more natural. I typed something up and read it over and over again to check for mistakes and to make sure I didn't sound too eager.

From Jack:
Hey Alex it's Jack. I kept my promise and listened to a few of you guys songs last night. I'm in love with the irony of choking on a lifesaver and if these sheets were the states lol

I pressed send and sat my phone down.

"Did you find anything?" My mom asked.

"Oh um I was thinking we could just get her something from Victoria Secret." I suggested. May always wore clothes from that store so why not.

"That's a great idea! I can get her perfume, some underwear, a few outfits, and a gift card from there." She exclaimed.

"Why don't you just buy her the whole store?" I joked.

"Oh hush and go put your clothes on so we can go." She chuckled.

I sighed and forced myself to get up. I grabbed my phone and peeked at the screen. I didn't have any notifications so Alex hadn't text me back yet. I was becoming anxious.

I went up to my room and threw on some jeans and a tee-shirt and my North Face jacket my mom bought me for my birthday. I didn't feel like messing with my hair so I threw my black beanie on. I slid on my shoes and picked up my phone to check it again. I saw that Alex had texted me three minutes ago when I was getting dressed. I wasted no time unlocking my phone to read it.

From Alex:
Hey! That's awesome I'm happy you liked something! And Choking on a lifesaver is my favorite song to play live.

From Jack:
Lol I liked a lot of the songs I listened to on Don't Panic. I think that one is my favorite so far.

From Alex:
Lmao so is it safe to call you a fan?

From Jack:
Yeah I'm definitely a fan

From Alex:
:) Yay, but I have to get back to meet up with Zack and Rian to go see our producer. Would it be okay for me to text you later?

I thought it was so sweet for him to ask instead of just saying he would talk to me later.

From Jack:
Yeah of course!

He sent me a message with smiley face emoji’s to acknowledge he read my message. I couldn't stop myself from smiling. I felt like I was in middle school with a crush all over again.

"Jack are you ready?" My mom called out to me.

"Yeah I'm coming down now." I slipped my phone in my pocket and went to meet her downstairs. We went out to her car and she drove us to the mall.

We only spent an hour in the mall since we knew what kind of items we were looking for. I was grateful we weren't there long because the mall was always crowded on weekends. Plus everyone from school either worked or hung out there so it was annoying seeing them.

My mom and I were now sitting in the living room wrapping the presents. Well I was putting the clothes into boxes and my mom was wrapping them since I couldn't do it so well. Alex still hadn't text me, but it didn't bother me. He was probably still with Rian and Zack.

"Do you and Kellin have any plans for Halloween yet?" My mom asked as she tapped the box up.
"None that I know of, but I'm sure Kellin will drag me to something." I chuckled.

"That's good, you need to go out and enjoy yourself while you're still young. Plus you might meet a really cute boy." She meddled.

"Mom please don't start." I sighed and she chuckled.

"Why don't you like to talk about boys with me? Does it make you uncomfortable?"
"Yes it's so weird!" I exaggerated.

"Have you met anybody you're interested in yet?" She asked, ignoring what I just told her.

"No mom." I lied.

"No one? Not even a cute guy from school?"

"No mom." I repeated. I actually wanted to tell her about Alex, but I knew she would want to meet him and she would find out about his age.

"Well I met a nice surgeon while I was at work last week." She stated and I looked at her shocked.

"Don't look at me like that! I'm allowed to date if I want to." She scolded me. She was right she could date if she wanted too, but it didn't make things less weird.

"It's just weird to think about you dating someone." I told her.

"Well I'm not dating him yet. We just exchanged numbers and texted each other a few times." She said.

"Does May know?"

"Yeah I told her and she was okay with it. I just want to make sure you're okay with it too. I know it can be a little weird since you live with me and might have to see him often if we get serious." I didn't think about that.

"Oh um it's a little strange, but if that's what you want then I'm okay with it." I said.

"Okay, but I'm getting way ahead of myself. He hasn't even taken me on a date yet?" She giggled.

"I'm sure he'll ask you sooner or later."

"Yeah hopefully." She exhaled and put a bow on May's last gift. "There now all we have to do is take her to dinner tomorrow and give her the gifts!"

I was in bed early tonight since I had school in the morning. I took a shower and made sure all my homework was done before I laid down. My phone dinged from where it was on my nightstand. I was going to ignore it until the next morning since I was drifting to sleep, but I remembered Alex was supposed to text me. I grabbed it and saw Alex's name with a text.

From Alex:
Sorry I'm just now getting back to you, I was with them longer than I thought. How was your day?

I felt the butterflies start up in my stomach. I was ashamed that he made me feel so special by asking how my day was.

From Jack:
No it's okay, and my day was great! I went shopping with my mom to find my sister a birthday gift then I did homework. Actually that sounds kind of boring now that I think about it lol

From Alex:
Haha it doesn't sound boring, well the homework part does but you have to do that. I'm so glad I didn't go to college.

I made up colleges stories and other lies to convince Alex that I was a real college student while we waited in line for the haunted house. He believed when I told him I was twenty-one, but he did say I looked younger than that.

From Jack:
Yeah you're so lucky. I wish I wasn't in school anymore.

From Alex:
Haha Don't say that. You'll be out before you know it.

From Jack:
It sure doesn't feel like it.

From Alex:
It will

From Jack:
If you say so

From Alex:
Lol what are you doing now? Shouldn't you be getting ready for bed?

From Jack:
I'm one step ahead of you. I'm already in bed.

From Alex:
Oh I'm probably keeping you awake lol

From Jack:
You are but I don't mind :)

From Alex:
Good because I don't want to stop talking to you yet.

From Jack:
Lol why? I'm so boring

From Alex:
You're not boring you're really interesting.

From Jack:
How lol

From Alex:
Lol I don't know. You're just so cute and innocent.

I blushed at him calling me cute.

From Jack:
I'm not cute and innocent! I do bad things sometimes.

From Alex:
Like what?

From Jack:
...I can't think of anything right now.

From Alex:
Oh I’m sure you will

From Jack:
Lol I can tell you're being sarcastic, jerk.

From Alex:
Haha I wasn't trying to hide it

From Jack:
-_- what are you doing for Halloween?

From Alex:
I'm not sure yet. Zack wants to throw a party at our place but I don't feel like have to clean up after a party.

From Jack:
I understand. I wouldn't want to either.

From Alex:
Yeah but if I can get him to promise he'll clean up afterwards then we can do it. Would you come to it?

From Jack:
Hmm I don't know. I'm so innocent and innocent people don't go to parties.

From Alex:
Oh god you're so annoying lol

From Jack:
Haha so are you. I guess I would go just so I can see your costume. What are you going to be?

From Alex:
I was thinking of being Freddy Kruger

From Jack:
I'm not going

From Alex:
Lmao no I'm sorry I was just kidding! I don't know what I want to be yet.

From Jack:
Mhmm I don't either, but I'm sure we'll both find something.

From Alex:
Wait I actually hate texting back and forth like this. Can we just talk on the phone?

I guess he was asking he could call me. Talking to him on the phone probably wouldn't make me as nervous as talking to him in person. I really hoped it didn't.

From Jack:
Yeah sure I'm okay with that.

A few seconds later my phone started ringing and Alex's name popped up. I answered it before it could ring a third time.

"Hello?" I said.

"Yeah this is so much better." His voice sounded so soothing.

"I guess so, but now you have to listen to my annoying voice." I joked.

"You're voice isn't annoying. It's cute just like you." Hearing him call me cute from his own mouth was so much better.

"Stop you're making me blush!"

"Well it's true."

"You're so sweet." I yawned.

"You're not going to make it five minutes before falling asleep." He chuckled.

"Yeah-huh!" I was on the verge of sleeping, I was just trying to force myself to stay awake so I could keep talking to Alex.

"If you say so, but back to Halloween..."

That was the last thing I consciously remember talking to Alex about. When my alarm went off the next morning my phone was still on my ear. I was still on the line with Alex. It said we had been on the phone for almost eight hours. I held the phone to my ear and I heard snoring. I smiled as I listened to Alex on the other line.

"Alex?" I called his name. He didn't answer so I tried again. "Aleeex wake up."

"Huh?" He yawned.

"We fell asleep talking to each other." I giggled.

"Oh shit did we?" He chuckled. "Sorry I didn't mean to have you up that late." He apologized.

"No it's fine, I really didn't mind." I assured him.

"Okay well have a nice day. Text me when you get out of class." He told me.

"Okay I will." I smiled down at my fingers and we hung up.

I would barely be able to stay awake for my classes since I was so tired, but it was worth it. This was a perfect way to start my morning off.
