The Essex Affect

The Boy And The Emergency

It’s been a few months since Alex moved in with me, and we started getting a whole baby room and everything set up for the little buy that would be coming any day now. No, sadly he still wasn’t my child, but I damn well was going to treat him like mine. On the bright side of everything, we haven’t heard or seen Oli in the few months that Alex lived with me. “Jack! Come on! I don’t want to be late!” The boy I was thinking about voice rung through my ears as we stepped out of my car.

“Okay, okay. Calm down you teal haired princess.” I rolled my ears with a chuckle as I carried both of our backpacks. Alex has been getting used to the few stares he would get as we walked the halls, and even went outside. It’s not everyday that a pregnant man enters your sights, and he has understood that. It’s still a bit strange to most people, since it was only proven to be true about fifteen years ago, but it’s honestly not that big of a deal.

We entered the school building and were greets by our lovely friends, Austin, Alan, and Taylor. “Hey guys!” Alex said with a cheerful tone.

“Hey Lex.” They all three greeted him at the same time, Taylor giving him a hug.

“You guys do your thing, we will see you at lunch. I need to get princess here to class before he freaks out.” I chuckled. “Talk to you guys later.” They nodded in understanding and I grabbed my teal boy’s hand and we walked off. Today was going to be a good day, and I just knew it.

“Shit, I forgot to do the homework last night because I was so caught up in that damned tv show.” Alex groaned as we entered our first class of the day.

“Which class did you have work for?” I asked.

“My last class of the day. One we sadly don’t have together.” He pouted. I chuckled and reached into my backpack, just because we didn’t have the class together, didn’t mean I didn’t have that class.

“Here cutie. Just have it back to me by lunch.” I said handing him the paper.

“You are the best.” He sighed with a slight smile and thankful eyes, causing me to lean over and place a little peck on his lips.

“I know I am. Now, what do you say we go out for lunch today? Instead of staying in the lunchroom, you, Taylor, Austin, Alan, and I all go out some place. You can choose where to.”

“Sure. That’s sounds like fun. Maybe we can go to veggie grill?”

“Veggie Grill? We have never went there before, that would be a nice change on things. Good pick Mama, I’ll text the other’s.” I said with a smile as the teacher walked in and I pulled my phone out of my pocket, sending a quick group text over to our friends.

We were currently in the class right before lunch, and Alex just told me about a few pains he was getting in his lower area. I asked him if he wanted to leave school and go to the hospital, but he kept saying no over and over again. To say I was worried, would be an understatement. I wanted to make sure my two boys were safe and sound, but I guess only time will tell if everything is okay.

It honestly couldn’t mean much, right? I mean, he did say it was only a couple like sharp jabs to his body every two-ish hours. Wait, could that mean he was going into labor? No, no, no. That couldn’t mean that. Maybe I should have did a bit of research on this kinda thing before diving into it head on. But, I’m pretty sure everything will be okay, I just need to keep a close watch on him is all. Not like I don’t do that already anyways.

By the time I was finished with my thoughts, the bell rang and we were all packing up our stuff to go to lunch. And by all, I mean, Alex, Taylor, and I. Since we three had this class together, we just had to meet up with Austin and Alan before we left.

We left the classroom and I reached to my side for Alex’s hand, but turned when I couldn’t find it. I looked back into the classroom and saw that Alex was stopped about halfway to the door. I looked at him confused, but then looked down and saw his jeans were covered in some type of liquid. “J-Jack. I-I think Phoenix is coming. L-like, right now.” He stuttered out. Making both mine and Taylor’s eyes go wide.

I rushed over to his side and put his arm around my shoulders to keep him from falling over, as Taylor ran over to the teacher’s desk, where Mr. Andrew was sitting. Once Taylor explained what was going on, he rushed over to us, helping me bring Alex over to a chair, grabbing out his phone and quickly calling 911 for an ambulance. “I’ll go get Austin and Alan. I’ll be right back.” Taylor spoke quickly as she rushed out of the room.

“Just breathe Lex. Everything is going to be perfectly fine, I promise.” I talked quietly to him as he gripped my hand for his life. I looked at his facial expression and he seemed to be in complete and utter pain, which broke my heart. If I could take the pain and he wouldn’t have to deal with it, I would.

It seemed like forever before the paramedics were rushing in the room with a stretcher, but was honestly only five minutes. By this time, Alan, Austin, and Taylor were all back in the classroom with us, looking as scared as I felt. Alex had tears in his eyes because of the pain and I just wanted it to stay so everything would be okay again. I wanted everyone to be happy and safe. Phoenix was coming, and he needed to be brought up in a world full of nothing but love. He was going to be, but right now he was causing his Mama bear so much pain and I didn’t want to see that. But I knew it was going to happen sooner or later, so we just have to deal with it for now. “Am I allowed to ride with him?” I asked the paramedics as they lifted him up and placed him on the bed with wheels.

“Sorry son. You can’t. You may follow us in your own car, but no one is allowed to ride with him.” One woman spoke as they started to roll him away, Austin, Alan, Taylor, and I right on their heels.

“Come on Jack. You can ride with us, everything will be fine.” Austin said as we followed them out of the school with more than a hundred set of eyes on us.

“I’ll see you soon Lex, I’ll be there right when they let me in the room. I love you.” I spoke to the boy who simply smiled a bit and waved a tad bit, as he was being placed in the ambulance. “Come on guys. We need to get there right when they do.” I spoke to my friends as we basically ran over to Austin’s car.

This was it. Alex and I were going to be Fathers. I wasn’t going to be the biological one, but I was going to be one.
