What Can I Say

Sometimes you're better off alone

A week later and I was still sitting in a pool of self pity and loneliness. Trent had broken up with me before I broke up with him for whatever reason he didn't say. I was currently sitting in some class. History, I think? I wasn't really paying attention, everything kind of faded into each other through the past week. It had only hit me the other day that I had told Alex the truth and that he shoved me away also, not like I was surprised.

"Shay, what's your answer," Joe, my teacher asked.

"Uh, sorry, what was the question again," I responded.

"Something that happened in 1812?"

"Battle between Russia and France?"

"United States. This is US history, you know what, stay after class."

I just nodded and went back to drawing on the notepaper in front of me. That was a stupid mistake, I had forgotten what class I was in and everything. To say I wasn't one hundred percent here was a lie. I knew that I was going to have to stay after with Joe and he not only knew my parents but I had also baby sat his kids in the past so this was going to be awkward. I had never wanted a class to last forever as I did right now because not only would I be late going home but also, I was going to say something stupid if I didn't have a solid lie.

I looked over when someone hit my arm and Jack, who sat next to me, slid a piece of paper over. I didn't want to read it, I didn't want to tell him. If I ignored the note it wouldn't exist, right? That's how stuff like that worked right? I sighed and opened it, my eyes adjusting slightly to his chicken scratch:

Shay, what's wrong with you this week?

I knew that it was a kind gesture and I simply scribbled him a message to call me later and I would explain it. It was just too difficult to try to write out on a scarp of paper right now. I slipped it over to Jack and continued with my full on sketch of a faceless girl staring in a mirror while doing her makeup. I don't know what possessed me to draw this but for some reason I felt really attached to it. Maybe I'd figure out why I drew it later.

The bell rang only a few seconds later and I put the sketch in my binder before shoving that in my binder. I waited for the other students to leave on a Friday, weren't they lucky, they got to go home and I had to stay here and talk to Joe. I walked to his desk once most of the students had left. I sighed and leaned against the board and waited until he finished his email. He took his glasses off and pinched the bridge of his nose while slowly shaking his head.

"You're a smart girl Shay, what's going on," he asked.

"A lot," was all I said.

"You can't slack now, you're so close to getting out of here."

"I know, I'm just really stressed and there's some drama going on cause you can't be a teenaged girl and not have any drama."

"I'm here if you need to talk, you know that."

"I know Joe, thanks, I just need to get some sleep I think, haven't had a great nights sleep in a few weeks."

He nodded and I finished packing my backpack and walked out of the room. Jack grabbed my arm and pulled me into the very empty hallway, one where there weren't any lockers. He stared down at me, it was almost as if I was a child that had disappointed their parents. I shifted uncomfortably.

"Talk," he stated, no jest in his voice.

"I told him," I whispered.

"That's not what's upsetting you. You're transparent so tell me what's actually going on."

"He hung up on me. He didn't want to hear it. Didn't you see his new girl? It was pointless Jay. We're beating a dead fucking horse. I'm just counting down the days till graduation. I got a job waiting for me in Cali. That means none of you ever have to see me again. That means I'm out of your lives forever in fourteen days. Make sure to tell Lex, I'm sure he'll be thrilled."

I began to walk away and Jack's words made me stop.

"So that's it? You're done. You're not even going to try because it's a little bit harder. Maybe he was right, maybe he does deserve better that you."

Notes

Okay, I know this is like a week late but last week I got really busy cause my brother graduated!! I also got sick and I got involved in a shit ton of drama that I'm still dealing with and wow is it all very petty. Anyway, with this story I can either make it into a two piece story or just one long one so tell me which you'd prefer because I just got a lot of ideas while writing this. I know this isn't my best chapter but I really like and be prepared for a special POV in one of the upcoming chapters (it maybe the next one or the one after it). Also, if I can work something out I get to go to Warped Tour with one of my best friends that I only see once a year so I'm really excited. I also got my work schedule worked out so I only work three days a week instead of six which is a lot more managable.
