What Can I Say

I looked down at Shay, soft snores escaping her soft lips. I ran my hand through her bleached blonde hair, staring at her sleeping face with tear stains on her cheeks. I pulled out my phone seeing a text from Alex. Should I tell him where I am? Should I tell him what happened? Does he have a right to know? I decided to just call him. I dialed the number and carefully moved Shay's head so she wouldn't wake up, she needed to sleep.

"Hey, where are you," Alex asked. "You said you were going to be right back and it's been an hour and a half."

"I'm at Shay's house alright and I never told you because I didn't want you to be upset," I told him.

"Why are you there?"

"She called me in tears. Someone really important to her just died and she needs someone here. You didn't see her when I got here, I did."

"Wait, really? Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she feels terrible for breaking your heart and she was going to call you but she thought that you hate her so she didn't want to bother you or waste your time. You don't know how she feels about you or anything. Just, tell her you're sorry for exploding at her and you want to be friends. She needs it. Seriously."

I hung up the phone a few minutes after that, looking back at the sleeping blonde girl. I made my way down her stairs. Her mom looked at me and silently motioned for me to go towards her. I lowered my head and sat on the couch beside the stressed looking woman.

"Thank you Zachary," she whispered. "You have no idea how much it means for you to come here. Especially after such a breakup and all of that. I don't know why she is being like this."

"He meant a lot to her and that's obvious. I was going to go pick her up some Air Heads for when he wakes up because I know she loves those so much."

"You're a good friend."

I smiled at the woman and got up off of the couch. I exited the house carefully, looking at the cloudy sky. I lowered my face, why couldn't I take her pain off of her and put it onto myself? She'd been through enough as it was and still there was nothing I could do to make it any better because the only person she wanted wasn't here anymore.

I walked into the nearby store and bought her favorite candy. I walked out of the store and noticed that the rain had finally started to fall. I lowered my head and rushed back to Shay's house, instantly wishing I had not only brought a jacket but also wishing I had put the cover on my motorcycle. I quickly entered the house, knowing her mother wasn't going to make me knock again.

I climbed the stairs carefully going up to Shay's room. She was awake and crying again. I quickly wrapped my arms around her, encasing her in a tight hug. I had thrown the candy on the bed and she looked up at me.

"I thought you left me," she whispered.

"You know I'm never going to leave you," I whispered back.

She looked down at her hands, messing with the bracelets on her wrists. The tears had stopped flowing from her eyes. She moved her face up towards mine, her eyes locking onto mine. There was no emotion in them, they were empty.

"You aren't the first person to promise me that," she whispered.

Notes

Sorry this is a depressing chapter, the next one will be happier I promise it. Also, enjoy Zack's POV. Sorry that I've kinda been MIA and I will be on and off for some time. I'm failing a class so I have a lot of work for it I need to do and I need to be practicing more than I am and my mind is just kind of everywhere so I apologize for that.
