A Love Like War

Welcome Home, Miracle Melody

*one week timelapse*

We left the hospital with doctors waving at us to say goodbye along with straggler patients looking at our baby in awe. It made me feel good inside to see people loving the sight of Jack and I's baby. I was holding onto the carrier that contained our beautiful baby girl. She was sound asleep which was good; she needed it after the adventure she had gone through. Upon getting in the car, I occupied the backseat with Miracle. I didn't want her to leave my sight; not once, not ever. I continued to stare in her carrier as we drove home. Although she was still sleeping, I still found things to adjust on her: her booties, her hair, her dress -- anything and everything.

When we arrived back to Jack's -- I mean, our -- house, Jack helped me and Miracle out of the backseat, yet I still had hold of her carrier. I walked in and plopped myself down on the couch with her; it was good to be home. Jack sat down beside me with a smile on his face. "She looks so peaceful, Alex." I looked down at her and nodded with a smile.

"I am so glad she's peaceful. I am glad she's here, to be honest. I-I had my doubts," I admitted in a croak. Jack reached over and pulled me into his arms. He squeezed me tight.

"Alex, you're a strong man, and I knew it would just rub off on our little girl. She doesn't have the name Miracle for nothing, right?"

"Right." I looked up at him. "Invite mama and papa over. I want them to see her; I want them to meet their granddaughter."

Mama and Papa stayed over for dinner. We were having Jack's homemade Italian food which I swear is one of the reasons why I fell in love with him. He could make pasta better than anyone I knew. We were sitting around the table: Jack beside me while mama and papa sat beside one another. Since Miracle was way too tiny to be in a high chair at the moment, she was in my arms with a bottle clad in her mouth. Her bottle was as small as a toy one because of her miniature size. I wasn't paying much attention to my food; she was my top priority.

"So," Mama perked up, "how's she doing?"

"Good," Jack answered, "she's sleeping a lot, though. Not really fussy, and she's eating well."

"That's good. But, uh, Alex," Mama perked my attention. I looked up from Miracle's feeding.

"Huh?"

"Your father and I need to tell you something." I was beginning to worry.

"What is it?"

"Alex," Papa now spoke up, "your mother and I, we're... we're getting a divorce." I stared at them with the widest of eyes. Jack dropped his fork in surprise. I took in a deep breath before saying to Jack,

"Take Miracle please." Jack removed the baby from my arms, and once she was gone, I got up from the table. "Excuse me." I pushed passed everyone and ran upstairs. I heard my parents call for me, but I did nothing but continue to run into the bathroom. I took a breather in there; my heart was racing. I didn't just hear that, no. My parents couldn't get a divorce; this couldn't fucking happen! Soon, though, it settled with me that this is happening, and I couldn't do anything about. I hit my head against the bathroom door, breathing in and out.

That night, I laid in bed with Jack at my side. Since Miracle didn't really have her own nursery set up yet, her crib was placed at the end of our bed until then. It was a relief knowing she was there. I rested my head on Jack's shoulder, petting his bare chest. "Jack?" I whispered up to him. He looked down at me.

"Yeah, babe?"

"Why do parents have to split up?"

"Babe," he sighed, "things happen. What your mom did was probably the cause of it. I am so sorry that your parents are splitting, but you have to keep your head held high. For us, please?" I looked up into his eyes to see the pleading leaking from them.

"I'll try my -- " Before I could respond, the faint sounds of crying interrupting me. Miracle was fussing in her crib. I was about to get to care for her when I was set back down.

"No," he said, "you carried her for 7 months. The least I can do is help her for tonight while you rest." I wanted to protest, but I decided to shut up. I watched as Jack picked her up and proceeded to bounce her in his arms. "Hey now," he cooed to her, "why are you crying? Why is my baby crying, huh?" I smiled at him cater to our child; however, I felt my eyes grow eyes heavy, and soon, I was sound asleep.
