Coffee Shop Soundtrack

The Beach House

Alex's POV

My date with Jack was going perfectly so far. First, I took him out to dinner at that little restaurant in Towson where Jack and I went for Valentine's Day years ago when we had only known each other for about a month. Then, we walked to the park that was near his childhood home, avoiding that house because I drove past it a few days ago and nobody had bought it since his father was forced out of it and the grass and bushes and trees were overgrown and the paint was peeling and this is such a run-on sentence and it was such a depressing sight.

At the park, we sat on the bench where we had supposedly talked for the first time or something (I honestly don't remember still) and I took my guitar out of my trunk and played Six Feet Under The Stars and A Daydream Away for him. "I missed hearing your voice so much," he sighed as I finished singing. I blushed because I honestly didn't think I was that good, but it made Jack happy so I'll just go with it.

The last stop of the night was a beach house that my mother and I purchased together two years ago for the summer. It was a few miles east of Baltimore, in a secluded area that was absolutely beautiful any time of day, but especially during sunrises and at dusk.

"Where are we going, Lex?" Jack whined, his long guitar-player fingers prodding at the edges of the blindfold I had made him wear. Cheesey, I know, but I really wanted this to be a surprise. "I can't tell you," I teased for the millionth time during this car ride. "I smell salt water..." Jack observed, and I just chuckled to myself.

Eventually, we came upon a one-way road that leads through a thick forest with the beach on the other side. As soon as we were in the middle of the forest, I allowed Jack to take off his blindfold so that he could see the beach as we came up to it. Jack gasped and bounced in his seat as the dirt and trees turned into sand and blue skies. The Gaskarth Beach House stood firmly in the middle of the sandy stretch, lifted by beams to avoid extremely high tides during storms.

"This place is beautiful," Jack whispered after stepping out of the car. My mom and I had done a pretty good job of making sure that this beach was well-lit at night. Fairy lights were strung in the air around a patio area, causing a twinkling glow to consume a small portion of the beach near the house.

"My mom and I bought it a few years ago," I explained to him, and he just continued to explore while smiling like a little kid on Christmas as I dug the key from my pocket and let him into the house. It wasn't huge, but not cramped either; having big windows to provide a lot of natural light into the house during the day. I turned on the sea-themed lamps and gave Jack a quick tour of the living room, bathroom, kitchen, etc, before tugging on his hand to lead him to my bedroom.

No, just because we were in my bedroom does not mean we had done anything sexual, gosh get your mind out of the gutter already. I pulled two pairs of swim trunks from my closet and tossed a purple pair to Jack since purple was his favorite color and grabbed two hoodies and some towels for when we get cold. After we got outside and were greeted by the warm Maryland summer air, I grabbed Jack's hand tightly and we ran to the water together, diving in and laughing as we came up for air.

The glow of the fairy lights on the beach was enough to light up the features of Jack's face perfectly, and I took a moment to stare into his dark brown eyes and admire just how grown up and mature Jack looked to have become, although I already know that he was the same little seven-year-old trapped in an older man's body.

We spent a lot of time just jumping around in the water and splashing at each other before we got cold and sat on the patio under the soft lights, holding hands over the table between our chairs and looking up at the stars. I pointed out random constellations to him, and Jack just smiled at me as he tried to find the patterns in the stars. "You're too smart for me," he pouted, accepting defeat when he just could not locate Orion's Belt. "Oh that's not true," I cooed, squeezing his hand lightly and Jack smiled.

"You know," I said, looking at the sky again, "if we stay up all night or just wake up ridiculously early, we can watch the beautiful sunrise together." Jack nodded eagerly, and I grabbed a volleyball from a basket on the patio and jogged over to a net that had been set up in the sand a while ago.

The night flew by pretty quickly, and before I knew it I had Jack sitting next to me in the sand as we watched the sun slowly make it's daily ascent from below the horizon line. "Everything about this night was beautiful, Lex," Jack smiled, and I couldn't help but smile back at his cute goofy smile. "Just like you," I whispered, causing us both to giggle as Jack and I kissed passionately with our backdrop as the Baltimore sunrise.

It definitely was a beautiful night with Jack, I thought to myself as we climbed the stairs to my bedroom at 5:30 that morning.
