Anything But Ordinary

Alex was cuddling me in bed as I wept quietly. We hadn't told anyone about the miscarriage yet, and I wasn't too sure I wanted to. But we had a get together at Jack's tonight to meet his new girlfriend. It was the perfect time to tell everyone, but I wasn't too sure Sarah needed to hear about it, because we didn't even know each other.

"Alright, sweetie... let's get ready to go," Alex said as he sat up. I sighed and allowed him to pull me up.

Any pain that had occurred had passed, and I was just upset, but I was going to put on a smile for my brother. He'd be suspicious if he found out I'd been bawling my eyes out.

So I let Alex pick out an outfit for me, and I put it on. It was a cute sundress that I loved, and my mood lifted only slightly.

"Thanks," I said. He smiled. He followed me to the bathroom where I plucked a tissue out of the box, and I dried my eyes so I could put some makeup on.

I gave myself some elegant wings and I applied my mascara carefully as to not blind myself, and I faced Alex.

"Good enough?" I asked.

"Whatever you want," he said. I faced the mirror. I grabbed my eyeliner and applied some on my water line, and some underneath, and I smudged it a bit.

"Better?" I asked. Alex smiled.

"You're always gorgeous," he said. I smiled and we left the bathroom to leave. Alex grabbed his keys and wallet, and I grabbed my bag, and we headed out.

We were the last to arrive at Jack's. I gave Rian and Zack and Cassadee hugs, as well as my brother, and he squeezed me tightly. He introduced Alex and I to Sarah, and I shook her hand with a pleasant smile.

"Hi. I'm Claire, Jack's sister," I said.

"It's very nice to finally meet you. You've got an amazing brother," Sarah said sweetly. I grinned.

"I do, don't I?" I asked, and she nodded with a laugh. Alex excused me from her, and he pulled me into the hallway.

"I think we should tell them," he said.

"Tell us what?" Zack asked as he approached. I leaned against the wall and crossed my arms as Alex turned to face Zack.

"Oh. That Claire and I are engaged," Alex said. My eyes bulged, but Zack didn't notice.

"Really!? Congrats guys! Hey!" Zack turned and left to break the false news, and Alex just shrugged after him. We followed, our hands clasped together, and all eyes were on us.

Everyone congratulated us, except Jack.

"You guys are engaged?" He asked. Alex looked at me as everyone fell silent. I nodded at him, and he took a deep breath as I clung to his arm.

"No.. that was a lie. There's actually something we had to tell you," Alex stalled.

"What's that?" Jack asked.

"Claire had a miscarriage a couple weeks ago," Alex said. I let my gaze drop to the floor, and my eyes filled with tears.

Nobody said anything for a while. When I looked up, everyone looked sullen. Even Sarah.

"I didn't... I didn't want to say it tonight because this was supposed to be a fun get together to meet Sarah. I'm sorry," I said. Jack shook his head.

"No.. it's okay. We can still have fun. At least you told us," he said. I nodded and excused myself to go clean up in the bathroom.
