I jog home from my guitar lesson with my instructor Donn. He’s cool and lets me learn whatever I want to. After my lesson I usually get home and practice the new material with my Guitar Barakarth. Yes. My guitar is names Barakarth.
I bound up the stairs into my bedroom. I place Barakarth on his stand next to my acoustic Bear and my blue Les Paul Standard. I named her Andy. My phone sits on its charger, two new messages.

JAGK: HEY! We’re on the bus CALL! DAMMIT WOMAN

ALEX: Text me when you’re free birthday girl (:

I glare at my phone…. No. Not the backwards smiley face. I respond to both of them quickly with a simple

ME: Ready.

I press send and get up, I check myself in the mirror pulling my hair out of its braid. I wear a Defend Pop Punk t-shirt I cut into a tank and red shorts. Damn why does it get so hot in Minnesota in the winter? I jump when I hear my skype ring tone chime. I smile at myself in the mirror. My reflection is surrounded by photos I’d taken. For art purposes, a few taken of the all time low guys and I. Some of me and my old guy friends. I jog over taking my seat in front of the computer and hit the ‘Accept’ button.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Alex, Rian, Jack and Matt sit on the couch in the front lounge. I can see Ian as well as some of the other crew members sitting to the side awkwardly staying un-involved.
“Hey you guys!” I smile at them widely and wave.
“What plans do you have now that you’re eighteen?” Matt grins at me.
“Probably just bang older guys right?” Jack interjects before I can say anything winking at me.
“No. I do not.” I correct jack with a smile “I just barely know where I’m going for high school.” I laugh
“Nothing planned for today then?” Rian leans back relaxing with a grin on his face.
“Nope, I just got back from my guitar lesson with Donn. What’s going on with you guys?”
“Well our cozy little family is getting smaller.” Alex chuckles as Jack gives Ian an accusing glare.
“Hey! My girlfriend is pregnant!” Ian holds his hands up in the air trying to defend himself.
“Whatever.” Jack groans
“Well anyway…” Matt try’s to carry on the conversation, “We just hired a new Bass Tech, BUT he can’t manage for Zack and Alex’s instruments.”
“And you said you learned how to change strings.” Ian raises his eyebrows at me.
“Yes…” I muster while trying to read each of their expressions. Alex and Rian just smile casually while Ian and Matt have a perfect poker face. Jack looks like he’s just about to shit himself.
“Well, now that you’re legal…” Jack grins
“We were wondering if you would want to take school on the road with you,” Alex smiles “And steal half of Ian’s job being my guitar Tech.”
Whoa Déjà-vu. The last time this happened I was seventeen smashed between Rian and Zack and Seventeen. Holy shit I can legally say yes and get the fuck out of this dysfunctional home. I close my eyes letting the moment seep in. Oh thank fucking god this feels good.
“Please?” I hear Jack whine.
“Oh fuck yes.” I laugh and raise an eyebrow at Ian. “But what all do I have to do?” Ian shrugs.
“Help set up the amplifiers and guitars, you’ll tune them and if they need any repairs you’ll do them. Technically you’re supposed to have a college degree but its pretty simple. I’ll be with you for the first couple weeks show you how it works give you lessons.” Ian smiles reassuringly
“Then start packing.” Rian laughs
“We’re driving through Minnesota right now. We’re making a detour for you now that you’ve said yes. You have a good two and a half hours.” Matt smiles
“And bring your damn guitars!” I hear a random voice call. Maybe Vinny?
“Should I?” I raise an eyebrow at Alex.
“FUCK YES” Jack chuckles “I want to meet your new babe Andy, the one you talk about all the time.” He winks at me like he’s trying to be seductive. Weird. I love it.
