There's A Ghost In This Room

Now Let Me Tell You Bout The Good Life

“So what's got you in such a good mood this morning?” My mom asked, while pouring another one of her famous smoothies into a cup, out of the blender.
“I don't know, just really happy, I guess!” I grinned to myself, and skipped through the kitchen, towards my mother.
Having Alex at Dulaney, literally makes everything like ten times better. Or maybe twenty. I don't know. I just really look forward to going to school, now!
Damn..never thought I'd ever say that..
“Come on..what is it? Make any friends? Boys??” My mom gave me a smirk.
I stopped, and thought to myself for a moment.
I'd never really thought of Alex in that way. He's always been my best friend through it all, and that's all he's ever been, really. But I can't help but wonder..what if?
What if me and Alex were..a “thing?”
Would anything really change? It's not as if we could possibly get any closer..
“Hello? Earth to Bethany?” My mom chuckled, handing me a smoothie.
“Oh um..I..made a friend!” I quickly responded, snapping out of my daze.
My mom turned to look at me in shock.
While I wasn't sure whether I should be offended or not, she seemed to beam with joy.
“Oh, Bethany!” She wrapped me up into a tight, motherly bear hug, which was starting to suffocate me; before she finally let go.
“I would love to meet them! That would be so lovely; you should invite them over!” She continued with excitement.
My mom’s joy from me finally making a friend was a little annoying, but I guess I get it. She's a mom who's always worried about her dispirited child, who's always alone and never ever goes out or has any friends over, like a normal teenage girl. Of course she's happy about this, and I'm really glad that she is.
Our family is pretty much just a broken mess of two people, who's smiles are probably only deceiving them; but the short, small moments in which we are truly just a little bit happy, are the moments we try to hold on to. We're both just doing the best we can to keep from falling apart.
“Sure, mom. I'll invite him over after school, tomorrow. But right now, I need to go to school. So bye, love you!” I leaned up to give her a quick kiss on the cheek, before grabbing my car keys off the counter and heading for the door.
“Alright, can't wait! Have a good day at school, Hun!” She called back in response, as I walked out of the door.
Huh..maybe it would be a good day, today.

In English, the time dragged by really slow, making it even harder to bear than usual. It was the class right before lunch; also the class right before I get to see Alex. I guess that's why it seemed so long.
The teacher was going over the homework we did, and everyone else seemed completely lost with the questions she was asking us. On the contrary, I was not lost at all, but no one needed to know that.
My test scores proved that I most definitely knew what I was doing most of the time, but yet, I'm still not confident enough to raise my hand and actually answer the questions in class.
This makes my teachers think that I'm just acting “too cool for school” or whatever, but I honestly just don't have the guts.
As always, I will forever be afraid to do what I want. I hate it almost as much as I hate myself.
But that thought was pushed to the side, when the bell rang, and everyone sprung out of their seats all at once. But no one could get out of the door quicker than I did, though.
I hurried downstairs and through the cafeteria, until I was at the vending machine, which Alex was leaning against; giving me his signature goofy grin.
“Hey!” I squealed, running into his arms.
“Hey! I didn't think you'd be here so fast..do you have some secret super speed that I don't know about?” He joked, with a smirk on his face as he pulled away.
“Says the dead person.” I joked back, sticking my tongue out at him.
We started slowly walking around the cafeteria in circles, while talking about our mornings.
“So. It turns out I've got first period with one of those chicks I was talking to, yesterday.” Alex began talking.
“Who? Ashlynn?” I couldn't mask the disgust in my voice when I said her name.
“No..the blonde one. Her names’ Jenna, I think?”
“Oh. Well sorry you have to deal with that first thing in the morning..” I rolled my eyes, just thinking about that stupid, ass-kissing snob.
Alex just looked straight ahead, and shrugged.
I stopped walking, causing him to turn around and look at me, confused.
“What was that??” I asked, appalled.
“What was what?”
That..that shrug! What's that supposed to mean??”
Alex just shrugged once again.
“It means..I don't know. She's kinda hot.”
I looked at him as if he were a completely new species.
“You think she's HOT?! She has a brain the size of an ant! I should seriously slap you, right now!”
“Well..I don't like her, or anything. Ashlynn on the other hand, she's like..damn. She's got beauty, AND brains, for sure!” He smirked, and bit his lip at the thought of her, which I found absolutely revolting.
“She isn't even that smart..”
“But she's witty, and I like it! I don't know, Beth..she just seems cool. Maybe I shouldn't pass up on that lunch offer..”
Now I REALLY wanted to slap him.
“Wait wait wait…so you're saying..that you're actually thinking about sitting with them at lunch?? Are you out of your mind? Ashlynn is so..so..” I tried hard to think up a name that was awful enough to call her.
Sooo…what? She's so..what, Bethany? Heck, you're probably just mad because she has a bigger rack than you do.” He teased, and soon started cracking up at his own joke.
Usually, I'd just tease him back and laugh along with him, but at the moment..I don't know. I just felt a bit..hurt. Upset, if you will.
I obviously couldn't give a rat’s ass about what he said about my boobs, but it was just the thought of losing my best friend to Ashlynn, that was bothering me. I'm honestly nothing special, and she's basically everything. Or at least she is in his eyes. I could easily get left all alone, back to where I started. And it would be her fault. She'll manage to make my life hell, one way or another.
“Hey, I was kidding! You know I was kidding, Bethany.” Alex stopped walking again, and looked at me with concern; obviously detecting my change in mood.
“Yeah, I know. It's not that, just…whatever. You can go sit with them if you want, I don't care.” I waved him off with my hand, and looked down at my feet, trying to hide my emotions.
But of course, that never works.
“Beth, if you really don't want me to sit with them, I won't. Besides, you're all I need, anyway!” He smirked, throwing his arm around my shoulders.
“No, if you want to turn the school whore into your next love interest, feel free. Have yourselves a nice little picnic, while you're at it!” I teased, as we started walking again.
“Come on..I bet she isn't even that bad. I've just gotta get to know her. I can't just not give it a shot without even knowing the girl, right?” Alex raised his thick brows at me, to emphasize his point.
“Sure. Whatever you say.” I shrugged, getting more and more irritated on the topic of conversation.
He sensed my irritation, and gave me a small smile as we pivot turned around to walk in the other direction.
“Not today, though. I'm hanging out with you, today.” He nudged me with his elbow, and I grinned and nudged him back.
“You gonna eat anything?” He asked, nodding towards the vending machine as we walked towards it.
“Nah, I'm out of change.”
“Here, I've got a dollar.” Alex searched in his skinny jeans pocket, and dug out a wrinkled dollar bill.
“Where do you even get money, what the heck?”
“I've got everything I could possibly need, trust me.” He grinned, while trying to straighten out the dollar.
“You'll still have to tell me all about that, ya know.” I reminded him, remembering our discussion at the movie theater.
“Yeah yeah, I will. Now, what chips do you want?”

Soon, lunch ended, and we went to our next two classes together. Now, we were in math; our last class of the day.
He seemed to be amazing at what we were doing; I for one, found it really challenging, especially since we just learned it yesterday!
He was raising his hand and answering everything correctly, earning shocked and dumbfounded looks from other people in the classroom.
We soon were left to work on something on our own, and I turned to stare at him.
He soon noticed me staring, and gave me a weird look.
“What?”
“How.” I continued staring at him.
“How, what?”
“How the heck do you know this stuff, already? Does this shit come naturally to you, or something??”
He found my question amusing somehow, and began to laugh and shake his head.
“Oh, Bethany. Have you forgotten, I'm dead?” He chuckled.
“So?” I shrugged.
“Sooo, I've got a whole lot of time on my hands. I like to walk into random schools sometimes, and go on those learning websites and watch videos and stuff. Keeps me educated.” He shrugged, and turned back to his work.
“Wow, I never realized how nerdy you actually were.” I joked, causing him to laugh a bit and shake his head.
“Whoa, you got the mute to talk! How'd you do it?” Zack asked Alex from his seat, causing his friends to laugh at his stupid joke.
“She's not a mute. Screw off.” Alex retorted, giving Zack a death glare.
Zack just snickered in response, and turned around to face his jock friends.
“Is this guy serious?? I think he should go back to where he came from, and take that mute chick, with him! How about you guys?”
“Well, you know what I think?” Alex started, in a much louder voice that attracted the whole class’ attention.
“I think you should shut the fuck up and get lost, with the rest of your little football fuck buddies, over there!”
This earned a bunch of giggles and snickers from the class, as well as a “no swearing” warning from the teacher.
Zack’s face instantly turned red with both embarrassment and anger; heck, he looked beyond angry at Alex.
Alex just smirked with confidence from his comeback, and held eye contact with Zack, until the bell rang and we had to leave.

“Well, congratulations! You're officially the cool guy of the school!” I teased, as we walked to the student parking lot.
“Shut up!” Alex chuckled, shaking his head.
“Oh come on, you practically have girls drooling whenever you happen to walk by!” I rolled my eyes at him.
“Whatever, I love all my admirers and my admirers love me!” He blew out a kiss and waved to the parking lot before ducking into the passenger seat.
“Oh, shut up!” I giggled, slapping him on the arm, before I started driving home.
I could really get used to this. Finally, a perfect day. Let's just hope that nothing ruins it.

Comments

This story is soooo good, OMG.
I read it in the time since I left that comment on your other story. If that tells you anything about how much I love it.
I'm bummed to see it's been a while since it's been posted for, though. I really hope you continue this and finish it sometime. Because I would really love to know how everything plays out.
What does the shapeshifter have in store? Are there more of them? Is Ashlynn a shapeshifter? (I kind of hope she is, at least that would give an excuse for her being such a bitchy person, but perhaps not). Will Alex be exposed and have to leave? I really hope that last one isn't true but it's a worry in the back of my mind constantly throughout reading this. :'(
So many questions. So needless to say, I hope my comment inspires you to maybe continue. This story made me very emotional, lol, like when Alex and Bethany were trying to figure out that they loved each other, and then when Alex was with Ashlynn breaking Bethany's heart... it broke MY heart during those chapters, literally, and I'm not sure a story has ever done that to me before... or it's been an awfully long time since it has. I mean, there are stories with the parts that are obvious sob-worthy scenes, but then there's this one where it just came with the heartbreak... maybe that's a normal thing to cry over, idk. But I usually don't, so, in summary, that just made this story all the more amazing.
I really like the plot line, did I mention that? I've read a few other Alex ghost stories but none quite like this. You definitely made it your own.
So I just wanted to leave a comment letting you know I really love what you have of this story, and think you're an amazing writer, once again, like I said with my other comment. I really hope you consider continuing this soon. Want to know how it all ends up playing out, even if it's heartbreaking, answers are answers.
I'll be here if you do continue. :)
