There's A Ghost In This Room

You're So Naive

Bethany's Outfit
Having a life, (well, almost life) here on earth has been fantastic. It's a truly amazing feeling, really. Being able to be seen and spoken to by more than one person. And the people at school seem to give me a lot more attention than I even expected them to!
All the girls are great, and all the classes are pretty easy for me. And Bethany seems a lot happier now; that's what I care about the most. That's the real reason why I'm here in the first place, and I know I shouldn't let my “sudden popularity” get to my head. She seemed a bit upset that I wanted to hang out with Ashlynn, and I don't know the back story on that, but I still want to give her a chance. I mean why wouldn't I? She's hot and she likes me. I should definitely go for it. Right?
Getting registered at this school was actually pretty funny. I talked Rian into coming six feet with me, and pretending to be my guardian so he could get me enrolled at Dulaney. That meant becoming visible to the principal and the other people at the office, so he was kind of wary about it at first. He took some convincing, but he just decided “fuck it,” and went with it.
He's a good friend for helping me out with this. It truly means a lot, and I definitely owe him one.
Now, Bethany and I just arrived at the school, and we were getting out of her car.
“So, you know how you said you have everything you could possibly need?” Bethany started asking, as we walked through the parking lot.
“Yeah..” I nodded in response.
“So..how come you don't have your own car?” She smirked.
“Because, I don't need one.” I also answered with a smirk.
“You don't need one? So what? You're gonna walk everywhere?” She raised her brow at me.
“Um, no. That's the power of teleportation…and death.”
“Sooo, you think you're just gonna be teleporting out in the open around here? This is earth. Everyone can see you, Alex. It's not normal.” She crossed her arms and gave me a knowing look.
“Whatever, I thought I did a pretty good job at being discreet…” I scoffed.
“Oh yeah, a person disappearing in thin air..how discreet.” She rolled her eyes.
“Okay, fine. Well you're my transportation, then.” I turned to glare at her.
“Or maybe she can be your transportation!” She rolled her eyes at the sight before her, and I looked back ahead to see Ashlynn walking our way.
“Hey, Alex! Hey, Brittany!” She smiled up at me when she approached us.
“It's Beth-“
“So Alex, how's your day been?” She cut Bethany off, and continued to smile up at me.
“Uhh..I don't know, it hasn't really started yet..” I chuckled, instantly going into flirt mode.
“Oh, shut up! Watch out, we've got a smartass over here!” Ashlynn laughed, pointing her thumb at me.
I laughed along with her, but I didn't miss the loud, exasperated sigh, coming from Bethany.
When I turned to give her a puzzled look, Ashlynn stepped closer to me.
“So Alex…we've been saving a seat for you at lunch..gonna keep turning down the offer?” She smirked up at me.
“Actually, I think I might just have to take you up on that little offer today..it sounds fun.” I winked, making her giggle and flip her hair over her shoulder.
“Cool, so I guess I'll see you then?” She asked, biting her lip flirtatiously.
“Yeah, you'll be seeing me.” I grinned at her, as she began to walk backwards.
“Cool, see ya then!” She returned the smile and began walking over to her friends.
“See ya!” I called back.
I soon found myself in a little daze, feeling excited about the whole lunch thing. I really wanted to win this Ashlynn girl over, and I think it's working.
“Gosh, this is unbelievable!!” Bethany groaned, causing me to snap out it and turn to look at her.
“What?” I furrowed my brows in confusion.
“You like Ashlynn! You actually have a crush on Ashlynn Wilson!!” Her facial expression was a mixture of anger, sadness, disappointment, and exhaustion.
I was getting all sorts of those feelings off of her.
“I don't know if I like her that much or not! I hardly even know her yet!” I argued at my defense.
“Oh, bull shit! You do like her, it's written all over your face!” She snapped, glaring at me.
“Okay, so maybe I find her attractive. So what? What's the big deal??” I gave her a puzzled look, wondering why she keeps going off on me about Ashlynn.
She blinked a few times, and started looking a bit uneasy, as if she was second-guessing telling me anything.
“N-nothing. Just..whatever. Have fun at lunch, alright?” She became all bummed out, and started walking away from me.
I grabbed her hand before she could get out of reach, making her stop in her tracks.
“Hey..tell me what's wrong. I don't want you being mad at me if I don't know the reason why.” I asked, more calmly.
“I’m not mad. I just…don't like Ashlynn very much. That's all. But don't let me get in the way of you two..” She started to turn back around, but I pulled her hand back again.
“Why don't you like her? And I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you came along, too-“
“No!” She quickly cut me off, with her eyes widened in alarm.
“No..th-that's okay..I'll be fine, really!” She started getting a little anxious and afraid, and that just confused me even more.
“Well, okay…are you sure you're not mad?” I asked her, wanting reassurance that she wouldn't hate my guts for this, for whatever odd reason.
“No no..it's cool. See you after lunch!” She waved me off, and began speeding down the hall to her class.
I was still really skeptical. She was lying.

After my two classes, I walked to the cafeteria in search of Ashlynn and Jenna’s table. It wasn't hard to find them, when they were making such a commotion to scream my name and wave at me from where they were sitting.
I flashed them a smile, and took the empty seat between the two.
“Hey Alex!” Jenna grinned at me.
“Hey!” I returned the smile.
“Glad you could join us, Lexy.” Ashlynn smirked.
“Well, how could I say no? It would be such a shame to turn down an offer to eat with you two pretty girls.” I began to flirt.
“And don't forget us!” A guy with short, dark hair took a seat in front of me, and Zack sat down beside him.
“Oh yeah! Hey, that's Brendon, and that's Zack…you've already met Zack, though.” Ashlynn awkwardly introduced them to me.
“Yeah..I have..” I nodded, glaring at Zack. He glared right back at me, before Jenna cleared her throat and gave him a look.
He rolled his eyes at her, before looking back at me.
“Sorry about that. We just got off on the wrong foot that day.” He sighed, unenthusiastically.
“Yeah, I think you guys could actually make great friends, don't you, Zack?” Ashlynn glared at him with a smile on her face.
“Yeah, we'd make awesome friends.”
Lie. But you didn't need an internal lie detector to figure that out.

The rest of lunch went by pretty well! That Brendon guy is pretty friendly, although not very loyal when it comes to relationships, apparently. Jenna is one hell of a talker, but she was mostly just talking to Brendon, so it was okay. I mostly just talked to Ashlynn, and got to know her a bit better. I found out she's on the school’s dance team, and that we have some classes together next semester. She's pretty cool, and actually really funny. I have no idea what Bethany was on about. Maybe she's a little bit on the bossy side, but still, Ashlynn’s a cool girl. And we all have our flaws, right? I'm pretty sure the girl is harmless.
Though, I still wonder why Bethany gets that way around her. As if she's..afraid of something.
I walked into my next class, and saw her sitting at her desk with her head down.
I walked over to her and crouched down on my toes to be at her level.
“Hey!” I whispered in her ear.
She lifted her head up, and turned to look at me, questioningly.
“What's wrong, Bee?” I pouted my lips at her.
She just shrugged and sighed.
I mimicked her, by deeply sighing back.
She started glaring at me after that.
“Come on, tell me.” I nudged her arm.
“I'm just tired, really.” She lied.
I gave her a knowing look, and she groaned and rolled her eyes.
“I don't know, okay? I guess I just missed you at lunch today. I forgot what it was like to be alone and all, I guess. I don't know.” She nervously explained, looking away from me and blushing while fidgeting her hands.
“Awww…you missed me! Can't live without me, huh?” I joked, trying to lighten the mood.
“You have no idea, Alex.” She shook her head in complete seriousness.
I gave her a little half smile, and stood back up. I leaned down and kissed the top of her head.
“No hoods in school, Waters.” I smirked, pulling her hood off her head and messing up her hair a little in the process.
“Fuck you, Gaskarth!” She laughed, while flipping me off as I sat in my seat next to her.
“Oh and Alex?”
“Hm?” I hummed in response.
“I forgot to tell you…you're meeting my mom today.”
“Wait, what?” I looked at her in confusion.
“Yeah, I said I'd introduce you to her today. I'll just drive you to my place, after school.” She shrugged nonchalantly.
Meanwhile, I was actually feeling a bit worried about meeting her mom. There were plenty of days when Bethany tried to get me to meet her, but that doesn't really work when she can't see you.
But now, it's the real deal.
“Oh, joy.”

Comments

This story is soooo good, OMG.
I read it in the time since I left that comment on your other story. If that tells you anything about how much I love it.
I'm bummed to see it's been a while since it's been posted for, though. I really hope you continue this and finish it sometime. Because I would really love to know how everything plays out.
What does the shapeshifter have in store? Are there more of them? Is Ashlynn a shapeshifter? (I kind of hope she is, at least that would give an excuse for her being such a bitchy person, but perhaps not). Will Alex be exposed and have to leave? I really hope that last one isn't true but it's a worry in the back of my mind constantly throughout reading this. :'(
So many questions. So needless to say, I hope my comment inspires you to maybe continue. This story made me very emotional, lol, like when Alex and Bethany were trying to figure out that they loved each other, and then when Alex was with Ashlynn breaking Bethany's heart... it broke MY heart during those chapters, literally, and I'm not sure a story has ever done that to me before... or it's been an awfully long time since it has. I mean, there are stories with the parts that are obvious sob-worthy scenes, but then there's this one where it just came with the heartbreak... maybe that's a normal thing to cry over, idk. But I usually don't, so, in summary, that just made this story all the more amazing.
I really like the plot line, did I mention that? I've read a few other Alex ghost stories but none quite like this. You definitely made it your own.
So I just wanted to leave a comment letting you know I really love what you have of this story, and think you're an amazing writer, once again, like I said with my other comment. I really hope you consider continuing this soon. Want to know how it all ends up playing out, even if it's heartbreaking, answers are answers.
I'll be here if you do continue. :)
