There's A Ghost In This Room

It was this morning when Ashlynn texted me saying that she got home really late last night and decided to just stay home and sleep in, claiming she “wouldn’t dare to show up to school without my beauty sleep.”
Even though she wouldn’t be at school today, it wouldn’t stop me from getting answers about this whole Bethany situation.
I mean, she must’ve done something to make Bethany hate her so much..right?
I mean, Bethany even said so herself.
I’ve just gotta get to the bottom of this..
I spent my first two class periods trying to figure out what the hell was going on between them. This caused me to zone out, and teachers ended up calling on me randomly, trying to catch me not paying attention.
But with all the knowledge I’ve gained over the years, I answered each question correctly, throwing them off guard and causing the students to laugh at the teacher’s attempt to catch me.
When second period was finally over, I quickly sped out of the classroom, ignoring the teacher’s annoyed looks.
I went to my lunch table, where Jenna, Brendon, and Zack were sitting.
“Alex! My man!” Brendon greeted me with a ‘bro’ handshake.
“Hey Lex! You know Ashlynn’s sleeping in, right?” Jenna informed me, looking down at her phone and probably reading a text Ashlynn sent her.
“Yeah, she’s my girl. Of course I know.” I chuckled a bit, causing Jenna to squeal and Zack to grimace down at his sandwich.
I turned to look at him and raised a brow.
“Problem?”
“What?” Zack snapped at me.
“I said…is there a problem?” I repeated.
“Yeah Zack…is there?” Jenna lifted her phone and gave him a threatening look that caused him to back down and look back at me.
“No. There isn’t.” He sighed, looking back down at his food.
“Good.” I smirked and looked around.
“Who are you looking for?” Brendon asked, after drinking some Gatorade.
“Oh, no one.” I lied, scanning my eyes over the cafeteria for Bethany.
“Hm..well you seem to be looking pretty hard!” Jenna giggled, then looked back down at her phone.
I didn’t see Bethany anywhere, but I did see Jack sitting on the floor against the wall. Maybe he knew what was going on.
“Uh guys…I gotta go.” I announced, quickly standing up.
“What? Where? Why?” Jenna pouted.
“Just over there. I need to ask someone about a um…project.” I came up with a lie, then sped across the cafeteria before she could ask anymore questions.
“Hey Jack!” I called out, waving to him as I walked over.
The second he looked up and saw me, he quickly gathered his things and stood up, exiting the cafeteria.
“Wait wait wait!!” I picked up my pace and went after him, trying to keep up with his long strides.
“What do you want, Alex?” He asked in an annoyed tone of voice, still trying to get away.
“I want you to stop and talk to me!!” I stopped him by grabbing his arm, making him turn around and face me.
“T-talk to you about what?!” He crossed his arms.
“About Bethany. You seem to hate me so I’m guessing you know what’s going on..”
“You mean what’s been going on for the past month?”
I looked at him confused.
“What?”
“Oh don’t play dumb Alex. As if you haven’t noticed how you’ve been ditching Bethany to be with that bitch you call a girlfriend!”
I was surprised and taken aback by this outburst. This isn’t the timid little Jack I remember..
“I really don’t appreciate you talking about my girlfriend that way..”
“Well I don’t appreciate your girlfriend treating Bethany the way she does either!” Jack shot back at me, getting super angry.
Ah…now we were getting somewhere.
“How does she treat her? What are you talking about?”
“What am I talking about? I’m talking about how Ashlynn and your little friends torment Bethany everyday and always have! Do you even know what they did to her a few days ago?!”
They torment her? No way..
“What did they do?” I asked him, crossing my arms.
“They- they uh…n-nothing..” He shied down and turned away from me.
“No no no, don’t back down now! Tell me what they did to Bethany!”
He immediately shook his head.
“Bethany didn’t want me to say anything to you about it..” He started walking again, but I quickly got in front of him, blocking the way.
“Come on Jack, please please tell me? She’s my best friend. I know I haven’t been the greatest friend ever to her lately but I want to fix that. I can’t live without her, and not even Ashlynn is getting in the way of that. So just tell me what Ashlynn did to her…please Jack.” I begged him, and soon felt him starting to trust and forgive me a bit.
He took a deep breath and soon gave in.
“Ashlynn and Jenna bully her all the time but a few days ago they really crossed the line..” He started.
“What did they do?” I nodded, encouraging him to go on.
“They…they took her journal and ripped out some pages, then made her cry and um…they saw the c-cuts on her arms and showed them to everyone, Alex! Everyone keeps calling her ‘emo’ everywhere she goes…that’s why she’s hiding out in a class right now! I-I feel so bad for her. And I hate Ashlynn’s guts.”
Just as he finished his story, the half lunch bell rang.
“Uhm..I have to finish a thing for class. D-don’t tell Bethany I told you anything!” He walked off to class, leaving me there to think about things.
My internal lie detector told me he was telling the truth…but how could this be?
I had never thought that Ashlynn could be so evil and manipulative. She’s been a bitch to Bethany and making me turn against her! Against my own best friend!
Man, am I dumb?
I just have to fix things with Bethany now.
Even if that means losing Ashlynn.
