We Were Born To Lose
Be Strong And Hold My Hand
Where did the last two days go? Time slipped away like grains of sand between our fingers as we watched Sir Gonthad kill his each and every opponent.
Today was the dreaded last day and the only remaining champions were Gonthad, Sir Alestare, the Vincent’s champion, and Alex. We had two hours until Alex faced Gonthad and honestly he was more calm than I’d like. Not saying I want him to be freaking out, I just want him to show a bit more concern.
“Remember his technique. He goes in fast and heavy right away so make sure you jump out of his line of fire right when you hear the horn.” I reminded, helping him with his armor.
“I know.” He replied.
“And make sure you don’t let him hit your leg. It’s stable but it’s still weak.” I said, my fingers feeling numb as I buckled clasps.
“I know.”
“And whatever you do, don’t let him get you on the ground. Don’t-“
“Jack we went through this before the first match. I know.” He murmured, placing both his hands on his cheeks.
Tears threatened to spill because I was so worried.
“Just…” I sighed, “Please be careful. Please come back to me.” I whimpered.
“Darling you couldn’t keep me away.” He smiled softly.
I stood up on my tip toes and kissed him deeply, as if the intensity if the kiss could save him. I didn’t ever want to pull back and leave him, but I needed too and I ran out of the tent, knowing that if I didn’t leave him, I might not be able to let him go.
I pulled my lip between my teeth, pacing in the field near the ring.
“Hey.” Cass’s voice filled my ears.
I looked up to see her and Alice standing before me.
“Hi!” I smiled, hugging them.
I hadn’t seen them in quite a while, they both had gone on trips to see their families which lived in the outer towns.
“We just got back yesterday, we heard about the rematch and everything. It’s exciting isn’t it.” Alice said.
“Yeah exciting and terrifying.” I replied.
Apparently they hadn't heard the important details.
“Why? Alex’ll be fine!” Cass said.
“Yeah that’s what we thought until Gonthad killed Elmore and everyone else he’s faced since then.” I grimaced.
“What?!” They cried in unison.
I nodded and they exchanged looks.
“But! There have to be rules!” Cass exclaimed.
“There aren’t and they can’t change them in the middle of a tournament.” I mumbled.
Cass rubbed her face and sighed while Alice’s teeth tugged at her bottom lip.
“Alex will be fine okay? He’s fought off five people at once, I’ve seen it, we all have.” Alice reassured, “Surly he can handle one knight, even if it is Gonthad.”
“You didn’t see the match. It’s like they are at the exact same skill level. They fought for over twenty minutes, vacillating between who had the upper hand.”
“He’ll be fine, Jack. I know he will.” Cass murmured.
I nodded but I didn’t really believe her. The trumpet that I had been dreading to hear sounded and I whipped around to see Alex walking grimly out of his tent. Alice and Cass both held my hands as we followed him to the ring to watch what could possibly be the match that ends Alex’s life.
