We Were Born To Lose
You're The Closest To Heaven That I'll Ever Be
“What did he say?” I asked.
“He said no but I think I might be able to get his to come around.” Alex said, shrugging it off. I hummed and looked back to the fire. I was curled up in his chair comfortably and then Alex stood in front of me.
“You’re blocking my view.” I murmured.
“I am the view.” He laughed causing me to playfully scoff.
“Come on, I want to show you something.” He said, holding out his hand. I carefully took it and we ran out of the castle together. He already had our horses ready and he told me to follow him as he cantered away. We didn’t ride for long, maybe ten minutes when he made us stop under some trees.
“Come here.” He said, dismounting. I did as he said and he suddenly covered my eyes with a cloth.
“Alex!” I laughed.
“Come on, do you trust me?” He asked. I paused for a moment before answering truthfully,
“Yes.”
“Good.” His voice showed he understood how serious I was when I answered his question. “Now come on.”
He guided me forward then we came to an incline. I stepped forward without hesitating. I meant it when I said I trusted him. Finally the ground evened out and I felt him stand very close behind me.
“Ready?” He whispered in my ear. I gulped and nodded. He removed the cloth and guided my head up. Stars. Hundreds of thousands of millions of billions of stars. We were standing on top of a hill that put us up at the same level as the trees and the whole sky was visible from up there. It was incredible how many stars peppered the sky. Alex lay down on the ground and I took his lead. We cuddled together under the wonderful view. It looked like the sky had billions of tiny holes in it and heaven was shining though. I knew I’d never make it to heaven, I was too disgusting and I was a terrible person. But Alex wasn’t. Alex is the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be.
“Jack?” I felt someone poke my side. I woke up enough to know that I was cold so I snuggled closer to the warm body next to me. I felt a deep warm chuckle fill my ears and he gently shook me.
“No.” I mumbled.
“Come on we’ve got to the castle before everyone notices we’re gone.”
I knew he was right so I grumbled and we both ran down the hill and rode back to the castle.
