We Were Born To Lose
Afraid To Lose Control
I woke to the sound of shouting outside so I shrugged my clothes on quickly and ran out to see what was going on. There was a man who was being held back by several guards and Sir Dawson approached me.
“He came into our territory carrying a note saying that King Cenrid wants a truce.” He said.
“Really?” I asked.
“Yeah, but I highly doubt he means it.” Sir Dawson sneered.
“What are they going to do to him?” I asked.
“Throw him in the stocks until we hear word from Cenrid. We’ll probably send him a letter ourselves.” He said.
“How will we get it to him?” I asked quietly.
“We’ll have to send our own men. But unlike him, we’ll send a bunch of armed and trained soldiers.” He informed.
“Dawson!” One of the men holding the man called. Sir Dawson bade me a quick goodbye and rushed to help. I watched as the man fought with all he had and they led him down to the stocks.
“Come, father has called a meeting.” The Prince’s voice sounded right behind me. I shivered when I remembered what I’d done the last time a saw him and followed.
I was stood a few feet behind the Prince while he, the King, and the knights talked about who was going to send the letter.
“I will.” The Prince spoke immediately. Everyone at the table cried “No” and I did so mentally.
“Listen, this mission will be very dangerous but I will be damned if I send someone in my place just because I’m afraid.” He said in a stern voice. It was clear that this matter was not a discussion so everyone nodded while the King looked at his son with pride. After Sir Merrick and Sir Dawson volunteered to come with, everyone broke off. I followed the Prince back to his room and he had some preparation to do since they were leaving at first light.
“Jack, this will be very dangerous. We will be going into enemy territory filled with ruthless men and into the enemy’s castle itself to deliver this message. I can not ask you to come with me.” He said. The thought of staying crossed my mind. I could fall back and not endanger my life but I found myself shaking my head.
“You’re my master. I go where you go.” I speak in a small voice. His face broke out in a grin and he gave me a pat on the back.
“Go pack. Plan for a week then get some rest, you’ll need it.”
