Wise Men Say

Early July. 10:45pm. Wednesday.

Alex laughed at the stupid joke Vinny made, he’s been cracking jokes all night. In the middle of their friendly circle music flowed out of the small speaker his friend Max brought. Dim lights surrounded the park making it light enough to see. The boys in a circle in the playgrounds tower, the tower was connected to a bridge and a big slide, the boys’ favourite late night hang out.
Alex leaned forward and turned down the volume of the music, he leaned back against the cold poles making up the towers walls. “Guys I’ve been thinking, what do we do now?” Alex lifted his knees to his chest and folded his arms over them, looking down at the speaker in front of him. “What do you mean ‘what do we do now’?” David asked shrugging his shoulders. Alex looked up at David who was to the right of him sitting in the tube at the start of the slide with his feet hanging out. Alex puts his arms down and crosses his legs. “Yeah I didn’t understand you either.” Vinny said. Vinny was across from Alex on the other side of speaker, sitting the same, backs leaned up against the walls of the tower with his legs crossed.

Alex jerked his head, flipping his long hair out of his eyes. “I mean your whole adolescent life is spent on school and school work. School becomes a routine in your everyday life, that routine becomes embedded into your brain” Alex said putting his finger to his temple. “How am I suppose to know what to do know when all I’ve ever know is school?” Max spoke up “That my friend is a great question.” Max was to the left of Alex, sitting in front of where the jumpy bridge connects to the tower.

“What I don’t understand is when you turn 18 that legally makes you an adult right?” Alex nodded “Yeah, I guess” “your old enough to have your own place to live, pay your own bills, go to your job-“. “Unless your in University," David interrupted. “M’kay” Max nodded “Say you are in collage” he continued “you have paper to write, tests to study for, just as stress full as jobs and bills. You go through all this, deal with all of this stress at 18/19, but still have to be 21 to drink.” They all let out a small laugh “Just don’t think about it Lex, try to be as happy and care free you can for as long as you can. We all know you have slight problem with that just find something or someone that makes you happy. Cling onto that and never let go, hold on for as long as you can.” David said. “Thanks.” Alex started to hear a loud roar come down the street. All the boys turned their heads in the direction of the sound.

Lights started coming from around the streets bend, lighting up the street. A motorcycle came around the streets bend, slowing down to the curb next to the park. The head light hit Alex right in the eyes, the lights went off and Alex had to blink a few time to regain sight. He stared at the person on the bike. They lifted their leg up and hopped off their bike, putting the kick stand down and taking off their helmet. They turned around started walking towards the park.

It was a boy; he looked around Alex’s age. The boy was tall and skinny with sort of long dark hair with blonde patches. He had a jacket on with skinny jeans and boots. The boy walked into the park and sat down on the swing. Alex could see him right between Max and Vinny. The boy looked at Alex and smiled, Alex’s heart rate increased. “Alex?” Vinny called, Alex snapped out of his daze and looked away from the boy. “What are you doing?” Vinny asked “Yeah, why are you staring at him? And why is your face all red? Do you know him?” Max asked. Alex felt his face, it was hot. He blinked a few times confused about what was going on. “I just zoned out that’s all.” David smirked “You were thinking about boobs weren’t you?” “NO!” Alex defended himself quickly. Max looked at Alex like he had 3 eyes or something “Stop being weird.” He said and Alex let out a small laugh under his breath.

“I think it’s weird and funny that in TV shows all the teens always go to bat shit crazy parties, but in reality that doesn’t happen.” David said “Yeah, in real life everyone is either socially awkward or a hipster.” Vinny said. “Hey look at us, we’re not socially awkward or hipsters.” Max said. “Dude do you have another friends besides us?” Alex asked. “I have other friends besides you guys!” Max defended himself

“Ones you only talk to on the internet don’t count.” David said
“Okay maybe that does make me socially awkward, but you can’t pin the internet on me your last relationship was 100% on the internet.” Max protested “HAHA he’s got you there dude.” Alex laughed and got a glimpse of the swing set. The boy was staring at him, not an ‘I’m going to kill you’ stare or a ‘please don’t talk to me’ stare. A simple stare that sent a shiver down Alex’s spine; it made his heart jump into this throat. The boy was staring directly at Alex, with a friendly smirk on his face. Alex’s eyes wondered, he felt a heat creep onto his face and looked away. Joining in on what his friends where talking about.

“That doesn’t make me a hipster, the food was on fire and I thought it was bad ass! Besides don't hipsters take photos of sushi or something?” Vinny asked. “Guys Vin became out friend because he didn’t belong anywhere, how on earth could you possibly call him a hipster?” Alex said trying to make is seam like he was listening the whole time. “Thank you Alex” Vinny said. “Yeah well Alex you are just plain weird.” David said. Alex was taken back, a little shocked. “How am I weird?” Max laughed “Dude, you spend a shit load of time in your room doing god knows what. We all know you’re not on the internet; because that’s unlike you and you really don’t watch TV.” Alex put his eyebrows together. “Lots of teens spend a large amount of time in their room.”

“Yeah but usually they are on the internet or talking selfies, no ones knows what you are doing.” Vinny said.
“Maybe I’m taking a selfies?” Alex smiled
“You don’t even have a Facebook!” Max stated
“No one has a Facebook!” Alex shouted back
“I have a Facebook!” David shouted

Alex looked over at the boy, he was quietly laughing 'is he laughing at me?'
Alex kept his eyes on the boy “well if you must know” he turned back to his friends “When I’m in my room I’m mostly reading or thinking, sometimes sleeping.” Alex lightly laughed.
“Okay Gaskarth” Vinny said pulling out his phone, the screen lighting up his face.
“Its late we should head back home…. Que David!” he said pointing at David.
David rolled backwards down the side. “Gaskarth!” Alex said shooting down the side head first. “Vin!” Vinny yelled running down the slide falling on his ass half way down.
“Maximilian away!” Max yelled grabbing his speaker coming down.
Yes Alex and his friends have a childish way of going down the slide; it’s like their secret hand shake but for leaving the tower. They all said their good bye’s and went their separate ways walking home.

Alex looked one last time at the swing set; the boy quickly turned his head. Did Alex just catch him staring at him? The thought of the boy looking at Alex made blush, but why?
Should he be creeped out?

Some guy shows up at like 11 at night all by himself to swing, he stairs at four guys in a tower listening to our conversation. He wasn’t staring at four guys; he was staring at me, just me. We go to the park almost every night and not once have I seen him.

Alex’s questioning thoughts drifted as he continued to walk away from the park; away from that intriguing mystery boy.

Alex was still on his journey home, the only thing he hated about the park was the fucking commute to his house is the farthest. The streets were quiet and Alex pulled his arms closer to his body, stopping for a brief moment to look behind him before he turned around to start walking again. Okay, so he was nervous, but you would be too if you had to walk home by yourself in the middle of the night. He laughed softly, shaking his head, and started to hum, attempting to keep himself busy and worry-free.

"I spent all my years believing in you, but I just can’t get no relief! Lord! Somebody, somebody, can anybody find me, somebody to love.” He began to sing, but before he could any further, he was interrupted by the roar of an engine that nearly had him jumping out of his shoes. He stopped abruptly and turned on his heels, his eyes first meeting a wheel, and the further they traveled up, the more he recognized. It was a motorcycle, the color dark, but he also recognized who was on it. His eyes continued up, and he stopped when he reached the face, and even in the dull light of the street lamp he could see the boys smile.
"Need a ride?" he spoke loud enough to be heard over the engine, and Alex blinked, looking around him before looking back at The Boy. "Yeah, you. You're the only one standing there."
Immediately, Alex could feel his face grow hot and he looked down at the ground, taking a step back. "No, no, that's okay."

"What?" The Boy planted both feet on the ground and cut the engine, sitting low in the seat. "I couldn't hear you."
"I said, 'No, that's okay.' I can walk home on my own, thank you," Alex turned and shoved his hands into his pockets, but he only made it a few steps until he stopped.
"Wait!" The Boy shouted after him, and Alex turned around. "C'mon, it's pretty lonely out here, and walking home alone is a bummer."
He shouldn't trust this guy, because he only just saw him at the park and he’d never talked to him before, but there he was, offering him a ride on his fancy bike of his.

“You’re Alex right?” They Boy asked. “Umm…Yeah, I don’t think we’ve met before.”
“No but I’ve seen you around… you seam cool.” Alex put his hands back in his pockets awkwardly.

“So... Do you want a ride home?” The boy asked again.

Alex shifted on his feet, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth. “Okay dude, you seam cool and all, but I don’t know anything about you, I don’t even know your name,” Alex paused; the boy’s facial expression looked kinda hurt. “I-I’m sorry just not good at meeting new people a-and” “I like Johnny Tremain.” The boy interrupted. “W-what?”

“Well you said you know nothing about me, that’s something about me.” The Boy smiled. “Urm... That’s a good book…”
“OO and the 60’s and 70’s” Alex awkwardly nodded at the boy; he didn’t know what to do or say.

He seams really cool and there is something about him that just makes me want to blindly follow him. Something inside me is itching to get on his bike and go where ever he takes me. We all have a chance to create an amazing story, maybe this is my future?
What am I thinking? It’s just a dude on a bike not my freaking soul mate!

“Umm well I would love to go that bike with you, but my home is like right there so...” Alex said chickening out on going with this Boy in front of him.
“It was nice meeting you…umm” Alex said hoping he would say his name.

“We should hang out sometime!” The Boy said, smile lighting up his face.
“O-okay when, where?” Alex asked not knowing how to get himself out of this.

“Meet me at the park, Friday 1-ish m’kay?” Alex nodded “okay, see you then”

The boy started his bike, he waved at Alex and began to slowly drive off.

“wait!” Alex called “I don’t know your name!” The boy looked back
“Oh! And I’m allergic to bees!” The boy turned back around and drove off.

Was his response to ‘what is your name’ – ‘I’m allergic to bees’? That boy is weird, I kinda like him.
