Kiss and Sell

Parties honestly weren't Jack's thing, and usually he'd be annoyed about being forced to go, and having Cass walk into his room while he was getting dressed, but tonight it was extremely different. Even Cass could see the grin on Jack's face wasn't going to falter as he pulled on a plain white v-neck and turned to face her.

"What's got you in such a good mood, grumpy?" She joked -cocking an eyebrow at the boy who chuckled at her gleefully. She smirked as she crossed her arms over her chest, "I'm guessing something with Alex?"

"Yeah. How'd you know? Did he tell you?" He asked -hoping Alex hadn't spoiled the news he knew Cass would squeal at once he told her. He knew that the two were best friends, though, and that she probably already knew everything. He wondered if Alex talked to Cass like a twelve-year-old girl -squealing about how in love he was with Jack over the phone.

Cass placed a hand on her hip as she tilted her head, "He told me he talked to you today at school. Said you told him I wasn't really mad at him. I assume you guys are friends again." She smiled.

Jack bit back his own smile, shrugging as he turned in his rolling chair while saying, "Something like that."

"Spill!" Cass exclaimed as she rushed over to Jack and turned him back around to grab his face, "Tell me everything! What happened?!"

Jack sighed, laughing quietly at the girl as she sat on his desk to listen. Cass was only there to make sure Jack was actually going to the party. She had stopped by on her way to Rian's house, and Jack had just kind of decided he'd car pool with her. He leaned back in his chair -placing his hands behind his head as he said, "Well, we were in a tree house. I was, anyways. Alex ended up there for whatever reason and he told me he wanted to be friends again, but like, more than friends, and he had said 'not like fuck buddies or friends with benefits -something more'. So, I asked if he meant dating and he said yes and we might have decided we're dating now, like officially." He grinned as Cass gasped and jumped up to hug him.

"Oh my god! I'm so happy for you guys! I can't believe this is finally happening!" She exclaimed happily -pulling back to fix Jack's hair since it was just a messy mop on his head, "Is he coming to the party? You've gotta fix this." She gestured to his hair.

"He said he'd try to make if but if he didn't not to worry." Jack answered before attempting to look at his loosely hanging bangs on his forehead, "And what's wrong with my hair? It looks nice!" He pouted at the girl who grimaced.

She teased it for a minute before asking, "What does he mean not to worry if he can't come? Is... Is it something to do with his dad?" She asked -tilting her head slightly as she thought what she should do with Jack's hair.

"I don't really know what's going on, to be honest." Jack admitted before he pushed her hands away, "Maybe we should stop by his house and see what's going on."

"That's all the way across town, Jack." Cass pouted.

"Yeah, but the last time Alex got involved with his dad about shit he broke his ribs. I think we should just check." Jack said worryingly. He didn't want his new boyfriend getting hurt on his watch. Damn did it feel nice to call Alex that. Jack couldn't help but grin as he thought about how warm it made his heart, his entire body really.

"Is his dad really that bad?" Cass asked, frowning at her friend as she bit her lip, "I thought maybe Alex was over exaggerated a little. I mean, it's never an okay thing to hit your kid but I thought it was like a slap or something... I guess I just couldn't ever imagine a parent hurting their child in anyway. I'm just not used to it." She rambled.

Jack sighed, "He's pretty horrible from what I've seen and heard. Don't tell Alex or anything, though. He'd hate if I told you about all of this. Doesn't want pity or something." He shrugged.

"Yeah, that's what he told me." Cass said before frowning in thought, "I think we should go, like now. I think Lex might be in trouble." She looked up at Jack, "Like really bad trouble."

"Why do you say that?" Jack asked as he sat up slightly.

"Yesterday I went to his house and... We were talking about you and his mom overheard. She said she was going to talk to his dad about it. That's why Alex blew up on me and I was mad at him. You don't think he went back there knowing his dad could be mad at him do you?" She asked worriedly.

"I don't think he's that stupid." Jack said before pinching the bridge of his nose, "We better get going right now in case he is."

Cass nodded as the two stood up. Jack grabbed his shoes and called goodbye to his mother as they rushed out of the door and to Cass's car. They drove mostly silently to Alex's house. Jack bit his lip in worry. He knew that before Peter had almost killed Alex, had left him in a ditch for fuck sakes, who knows how badly he could have hurt him this time. He could be dead. Jack felt a tinge of guilt in his heart. Alex had been so worried Peter was going to hurt Jack and Jack hadn't listened to him. In fact, he had told him not to worry. Alex was right all along he should have worried. Jack should have done something, actually. He should have fixed this entire thing somehow. Now it was too late.

Cass grabbed his arm when they stopped in front of Alex's house -gasping as she saw the silhouette of a body laying in the grass and the flash of police lights in the driveway. With tears in her eyes she glanced over at Jack who quickly unbuckled his seat belt to jump out of the car in a heartbeat to run to the body in the yard -praying it wasn't who he knew it was.
