I'm Not A Savior

VII

I didn’t feel safe sleeping alone at home. With my uncle being gone all the time, I was easy picking. I asked Tay to stay the night with me. I even gave her permission to bring her grimoires with her so she can try to find the right spell to get my past life out of my head.

“So,” Tay looked up from a grimoire that proved to not have the spell she needed, “How does it feel to have the hots for the teacher?”

“I take it you knew all along,” I asked her.

“I was helping him attempt to be smooth around you,” she smirked, “Sadly crypt keeper isn’t all that smooth. It must be his old bones.”

“You’re a bitch,” I giggled and hit her with my pillow, “But I was drawn to him too. You could have given me advice on how to talk to him.”

“I tried okay,” she defended herself, “Your way of asking for advice was very vague.”

“Sorry,” I shrugged my shoulders, “I’m new to this kind of thing anyway.”

“So you are as green as they come to romantic relationships,” she smirked, “Alex will have a field day over this.”

“What about Alex having a field day,” Tessa popped up in my open window, “Are those fun? Can I have one?”

“Tessa that was a figure of speech,” Tay pinched the bridge of her nose, “And why are you here blondie?”

“I brought Alex with me,” she smiled innocently, “He wanted to take Kenzie on a walk under the moon.”

“A walk under the moon,” I looked over at my alarm clock, “At 11 at night? I have to be back by 1.”

I grabbed a jacket and my house keys. I left Tay to her research and Tessa stayed at my window to play the role of watch dog. I made it to the door and opened it to a very casual Alex. He wore a glamour kills shirt, the sleeve cut off and the side seems opened up a little, dark grey skinny jeans, black combat boots that had seen better days, and a snapback that matched his shirt was worn backwards and barely on his head.

“Wow,” I looked him up and down, “It’s so weird to see you not wear a tie.”

“If I could, I would ditch the damn thing,” he smirked, “The damn thing chokes me like a noose.”

“Maybe I’ll have to help you get you tie on the right way,” I joked with him, “Let’s get this walk started. I need to be back by 1.”

Alex held out his arm to me, and I draped my arm over his. He lead me off on our stroll, it wasn’t a hard walk. Alex wasn’t rushing me, since I could tell he was straining a little to maintain control on his strength and speed.

“I take it vampires move faster than humans,” I asked him, already sort of knowing the answer.

“I could run to my apartment on the other side of town and back in about six seconds,” he smirked.

“Now you’re just being an arrogant asshole,” I laughed and playfully pushed him.

“Oh no I wouldn’t want to be like that,” he smiled and laughed. His smile was stunning. He was so warm and his eyes would light up and he’d scrunch up his nose when he laughed. He was just so stunning. I guess that came with being a vampire. He was designed to be perfect, to lure you into his trap.

“I take it that your transition made other changes to you,” I asked him.

“It fixed imperfections,” he explained, “Gave me fangs, and when I pull them out I look menacing. But the change made me way stronger and faster. I also have a natural pheromone that draws in people, making me irresistible.”

“I resisted you up until those eyes of yours,” I smirked, “The scent had nothing to do with it.”

“I’m glad that my mother’s eyes served me well,” he smiled that winning smile again, “She’d be proud of that her genes helped her son land a beautiful woman.”

“I’m still just a girl,” I told him, “And an orphan at that.”

“So am I,” he replied, “But I’m curious as to how you became an orphan.”

“When I was little,” I started, “My parents went out on a date, but they didn’t come back. They lost control of their car and drove into the icy waters. It was just days after I had turned two.”

“Wow,” he looked at me with pain in his eyes, “That wasn’t fair for you. You were just a babe and you didn’t get to know them.”

“I live with my uncle,” I told him, “He’s been like a father to me. I’ve moved around a lot due to his old job as an architect, but he got laid off and works two jobs now. Cook by day and a bartender by night.”

“I’d like to meet him one day,” Alex smiled and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me into his side. For being undead for three hundred years he still had warmth to his body, “I should thank him for bringing up such an impressive young woman.”

That’s when I felt a shift and stopped walking. I slammed my eyes shut and fell to my knees. I let out an awful scream, and I couldn’t hear anything.
♪♫♪ When Kenzie stopped walking and I heard her scream, I panicked. I ran to her side and saw her eyes were closed and she just kept screaming. She looked like she was in unimaginable pain. I had no idea what to do and I was freaking out.

“Kenzie,” I shook her shoulders, but she wouldn’t move, “Mackenzie. Come on snap out of it.”

After everything I tried, she wasn’t responding. It had to have been my fiancée’s soul trying to surface on her. I scooped her up into my arms and ran off to her house, keeping her steady in my arms as I hit my top speed. I saw Tay sitting at the window to her room, working with Tess on research.

“Tay can you get Kenzie inside,” Kenzie was quiet now, but she still wasn’t waking up.

“What did you do to her,” Tay was pissed and I felt her use her magic to make me have aneurysms over and over again as I healed from them.

“It wasn’t me,” I groaned in pain, “It’s the soul memories. She had an attack and started screaming. I have no idea what triggered her.

“I’ll need to work fast on this,” Tay looked over at Kenzie as laid still on her bed, a little too still, “She’ll lose her mind if this continues. You’ve lost enough, Alex.”

“Tay,” I looked at her, “If I lose her, I lose my last reason to keep them on.”

“Keep what on,” Tay looked at me, but I knew Tess knew what I meant.

“He means his emotions,” she answered for me, “He did it once, and it was not pretty.”

I didn’t want to turn off my humanity, my emotions. I’m vicious when I don’t feel anything all.

Notes

Poor Kenzie. Things will get better though, but more drama coming up soon.
