I'm Not A Savior

VI

After my talk with him, I was scared of following what I felt in my heart. I knew it was telling me things, things that weren’t the most logical. But I was still lured in. I felt even more in my dreams.

“Kill, Alex. You know it’s your nature,” the woman nagged him, “Kill her. I know you want to.”

That’s when it clicked. The woman wanted Alex to kill me, or at least I think it was me.

“No Alex please,” I found myself saying, but it wasn’t my voice.

The scene changed so I was looking over his shoulder. The young woman in front of him looked like she was close to him. A locket was open around her neck, a picture of him inside of it. She had to have been his betrothed. Another thing that threw me off about the scene was the way she was dressed, along with what Alex was wearing. I swear the clothing was from Colonial Age England at least.

“No,” Alex groaned, “I won’t kill her.”

“You will,” the woman grabbed his hair and made him look at her, “You will kill her if you want to live.”

Alex did as she asked, and killed the woman. She looked familiar to me. She reminded me of me, only my hair is red not light brown.

I woke up with a start. I remembered the entire scene. I even remembered what his face looked like when he looked up at me, blood all over his mouth and cheeks, the fangs that kept him from keeping his mouth closed. It was all too weird for me to handle. I needed to talk to Alex about it. He was in my dream after all.
--- I got to school early and I found my way to Alex’s classroom. Once I was in, I shut and locked the door and looked at him. Soon another man, a blonde from my classes, and Tay appeared out of the closet of the room.

“Kenzie,” Alex looked startled.

“What’s wrong,” Tay asked me, “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Who was she,” I stared at Alex, unnerved by the witnesses.

“What are you talking about,” he asked.

“The woman you had to kill to stay alive,” I asked again, “Who was she?”

“Alex,” the man spoke up first, “Should we give you a moment with her? Or compel her to forget?”

“You guys can stay,” he told the man, “You’ve all heard the story. Kenzie has a right to know. Maybe Tay can help us understand what happened to Kenzie.”

“Kenzie,” Tay guided me to Alex’s desk chair, “Tell us about what you’re talking about. And please start from the beginning.”

“I had a dream last night,” I started to tell my tale, “I don’t what triggered it, but it felt so off. It had to of taken place during the Colonial period in England.”

Alex’s face dropped and he frowned, like he knew what the dream was.
♪♫♪ As soon as she pinpointed the time period of the dream, I knew what it was.

“That wasn’t a dream,” I told her.

“Alex,” Tay looked at me like I was insane.

“What was it,” Kenzie asked.

“A memory,” I told her plainly.

“Who’s memory,” she continued to grill me.

“My former fiancée,” I told her, “Carmina used her as my first kill. The one that sealed my fate.”
♪♫♪ “I don’t understand,” I told him, “What fate? Why kill her?”

“Alex do you want me to tell her,” the blonde asked.

“No I will,” Alex took a deep breath before continuing, “I was hoping to wait on telling you, but I triggered something in you. I triggered a soul memory.”

“A soul memory,” Kenzie questioned, “What’s a soul memory and why did I have one in my sleep last night?”

“A soul memory,” Tay explained, “Is when a past life interacts with a soul it was close to. It gets experienced as a dream, but the one that gets the memory to play can start to have hallucinations. They can even have blackouts, meaning the soul that has pasted in the host has gained enough strength to take control.”
♪♫♪ “But what does that mean for me,” Kenzie was terrified. I could feel her heart pounding in my ears she was so scared.

“Your past life was of my former fiancée,” I told her, “But did you see what happened after she died in the dream.”

“I saw your face,” her voice was shaky, “Covered in blood and you had fangs.”

“Then you know what I am,” I sighed heavily and sat down on the floor by the chalk board, “I’m a vampire, Kenzie. I’m 325 years old. I was born in Essex, England in 1687. I was turned in 1712, right on my birthday, December 14th.”

“But why did she have to die,” she asked.

“Because vampires have to go through what we call a transition,” I explained, “I had to take in vampire blood, get my human blood drained to the brink of death, and then I have to feed on a human. Once I was turned, the one that turned me, Carmina, ordered me to finish her off. She made me kill her.”

“Why didn’t you fight her,” she asked, “You could have saved her.”

“No I couldn’t,” I told her, “When you’re a newborn vampire, the first year is the blank slate year. Your human emotions are turned off and the instinct to hunt, feed, and kill take dominance. I was a monster and I slayed her. The woman I loved as a human. I vowed after that to not get close to anyone again.”

“But then he saved me,” Tess jumped in, “I was turned 50 years Alex. He saved me from dying by his creator’s hands. But I had to be turned so I could survive. I’ve been his companion ever since.”

“I almost died in a car wreck three years ago,” Matt added, “But Alex showed Tessa how to turn me. I was smitten by her ever since. Of course she was the first person I saw when I started my transition.”

“If it makes you feel any better,” Tay butted in, “I’m the only human in the band of misfits here, but I’m a witch.”

“This has to be a dream,” Kenzie grabbed at her hair.

“I wish it were,” I told her, “But I promise I won’t let history repeat itself. Carmina will not get her hands on you. I won’t let her.”

“Alex,” she looked at me, “Are the soul memories the reason I’m drawn to you?”

“I think so,” I replied, “I wasn’t influenced by the possibility you were the next life of my dead fiancée. My compassion for you is genuine and new, not recycled from my former life.”

“What happens now,” she asked.

“We continue to follow the path we’re on,” I told her, “That’s if you still feel the same about after what I told you.”

“The vampire thing doesn’t change it,” she replied with a sigh, “But I want to get rid of the dreams. I felt like I was killed last night.”

“I’ll look into ways of separating you from her soul,” Tay suggested, “But it will take time. I don’t have the blessing of my family to help you out.”

“Why not,” Kenzie asked her.

“My mom,” she looked down at the ground and paused, “She was turned into a vampire when I four. She told me she was sired by the vamp as Alex. But I won’t stop because I want my revenge for losing my dad and having to keep my mom locked up in our basement so she won’t hurt anyone.”

“And what about the student and teacher relationship thing,” Kenzie looked right at me, “You know that’s illegal.”

“I know,” I replied, “I’m going to quit after the semester is over. The principal might hate me, but it keeps me out breaking the law. Don’t even consider asking me to turn you. I have no control around human blood.”

“Why not,” she asked.

“I nearly killed Tess when I turned her,” I answered, “And you’ve the first time I succeeded.”

“If you learned control, could you turn me,” she asked, not giving up.

“Once you’re older, I’ll consider it,” I told her, “I have certain requirements for you before you even consider it.”
