The Sadness Will Never End

The next day Jack ignored Alex. Jack didn’t respond to any of the older boy’s texts, he didn’t answer the phone when Alex called –Jack wanted nothing to do with him. Jack knew that it probably wasn’t the right way to be going about things but he could get replaced, not by his new girlfriend. Jack was going to leave Alex before there was even a slight chance that that might happen.
Alex had seen Jack walk past him quite a few times. Alex had made an effort to try and talk to him but Jack would just walk away from him. Alex didn’t understand what he’d done wrong. He told Jack that he forgot he had a date. Alex didn’t think that the younger boy would actually be upset about it. They were only going to do maths work anyway, what’s the fun in that?
What Alex didn’t see was that Jack wanted to actually spend time with him. Whether it was doing maths homework or watching a movie, Jack just wanted to be around someone that wanted to be around him. But then again, Jack didn’t really know if Alex wanted to be around him.
There wasn’t anything special about Jack; he was just plain old Jack. The Jack with no friends. The Jack that didn’t talk. In all honesty Jack wouldn’t be too surprized if Alex didn’t want to be around him. The two barely knew anything about each other.
Alex helped Jack one night, that was it. Alex didn’t know what Jack thought about each day, he literally knew nothing. Jack didn’t even know what music Alex listened to. It was little things like this that Jack didn’t know that made him angry.
Everyone has that one friend that they can tell everything to but where’s Jacks? Jack had never really had a friendship that had lasted for more than a week.
Whenever Jack had group assignments he’d always be the one that did all of the work. That was simply because no one wanted to be in a group with him so they just let him do all of the work. The joke was on them, Jack wasn’t good with grades.
Jack walked home, wallowing in self-hatred and sickness, this whole Alex business was driving him up the wall. He knew that he shouldn’t be so hung up on a boy that was clearly straight but Jack had nothing else to get attached to.
As Jack walked through the front door he was greeted by a face he didn’t want to see today, or tomorrow, or until he was ready. “Jack, sweetie, your father and I are going out with Alex’s parents again tonight so it’ll be the two of you here, have fun,” Jack’s mother kissed his temple before walking out the door alongside her husband.
It wasn’t even 4PM yet, Jack didn’t know how long he’d be able to spend time with Alex before he said something that would offend the two of them, he’d just have to hold on.
“So, what do you want for dinner?” Alex asked, “I know how to cook.” Of course he did. Jack rolled his eyes and slumped down in the living room on one of the couches.
Jack didn’t reply, he didn’t want anything to eat and he didn’t want to talk to Alex. Whilst at school with however many people there were, Jack was able to blend in with the crowd and avoid Alex but when the two were alone in Jack’s house, he didn’t really have a choice.
“Look, Jack, about last night –“ Jack cut off Alex. “Alex, I don’t want to hear it. Whatever happened with you last night doesn’t concern me.”
That shut Alex up. Smirking, Jack reached for the television remote to change the boring sitcom to something more interesting. Anything was interesting as long as it wasn’t the same jokes one after the other.
“So,” Alex began, clearing his voice, “Have you listened to PAX AM Days?” Jack knew that the older boy was referring to the new Fall Out Boy EP that had come out a little while ago. Reluctantly, Jack nodded his head and looked over at Alex. “Favourite track?” Alex offered. “Caffeine Cold, you?” “Hot to the Touch, Cold on the Inside,” Alex returned.
Jack no longer felt that annoying pang that he felt whenever he saw Alex. He was slowly learning that he would be able to overcome whatever small issues would pass him.
“Alex, I’m sorry for being a dick to you,” Jack sighed, “I just didn’t know how to deal with last night,” Jack ran his fingertips through his hair. “It’s alright, Jack,” Alex smiled, “And if it makes you feel any better, the date was pretty shitty,” Alex laughed, causing Jack to laugh along with him.
