Sometimes, The Sickness is The Cure

Here's To You

Don't get me wrong,
I know you've got your life in place
I've yet to take the hint, someday
I'm sure I'll get the picture
And stop waiting up

Jack pondered as he and Alex walked towards the Impala that contained all of Alex’s belongings. Did he make the right choice in letting some guy he met a week ago live with him? He didn’t know much about him. What if he was dangerous? Some serial killer that acts innocent at first then enters your house to kill you?

I was gonna kill myself anyway, might as well die without committing the sin.

The dark haired man helped Alex haul his cheap suitcases and bags with all the things the older man owned. Which wasn’t much, but it was something. They managed to bring everything inside with only two trips, including an inflatable mattress in which Alex intended to sleep with in the extra unoccupied room in Jack’s apartment.

“You know Alex, it’s funny how life works sometimes,” Jack said as he carefully placed the brunette’s suitcase on the ground.

“What do you mean?” The older man turned and tilted his head.

“Well, life is an unfair game. Success, love, and happiness aren’t really certain to appear in your life. The only certain thing we have in life is death. Yet, when we find ourselves in our weakest state, a random something appears to give us some sort of hope. Whether it be a song, a chance, or even a person. Appearing out of the blue, to snap you into reality and say; ‘Hey kid, you’ve got a lot potential and I think it’s time to move up.’ It’s a beautiful thing really,” Jack said looking at Alex from across the room, who was sitting on the floor.

“Uh- Jack, that was some deep stuff. And you’re definitely right about that. I think you’re my something. A sign of hope. Cause without you, I don’t know where I’d be right now. I’m sure happy I met you,” He said standing up, walking towards the dark haired man.

Alex, you’re my sign of hope too…

“I’m your fan aren’t I?” Jack smirked.

“I like the way you speak your mind so clearly,” Alex grinned.

“Eh, don’t be fooled, hah-”

“What do you mean?” Alex inquired.

“Well,”

I can’t tell you.

“Aren’t you hungry? We should eat,” Jack pulled his cell phone out, looking for his favorite delivery pizza he had saved on his phone.

“Yeah, I guess so but-“

“Is pizza good?” Jack cut off the older man.

“Pizza would be great,” Alex’s face lit up.

“Awesome,” Jack pressed the call button, stepping out of what was now Alex’s room.

It didn’t take Jack long to order the pizza. He just wanted to be alone for a while, so he acted as if the call lasted longer. For some reason, he was somehow able to speak his mind with Alex. Something he’d never really done with anyone that wasn’t Lisa. Yet, he didn’t tell Alex what he thought about him. He didn’t want Alex to feel weird because a guy he’d just met was telling him; ‘Hey I didn’t kill myself because of you!’ or something awkward in that range. Excluding that, there was something about Alex he trusted, yet he didn’t know what or why.

”Hey Jack?” A knock was heard on the door.

“Yeah? Come in,” Jack said as he sat on his bed.

“I forgot to tell you, I’ll pay for the pizza. It’s the least I could do,” Alex said standing in the doorway, nervous to walk in.

“You don’t have to do that Alex, I got it,” Jack nodded.

“Seriously, don’t worry about it,” Alex reassured the younger boy that he wasn’t going to change his mind.

“Okay then,” Jack ginned.

There was a moment of silence, and the two men just looked at each other. Not knowing what to say next or what the other one was thinking. Alex forced himself to look around the room Jack inhabited, just to kill the awkward tension between them. Jack followed Alex’s gaze. Looking at the few band posters that hung, a CD rack, a television set, and a personal bathroom. Nothing too impressive.

“Alex, you can come in,” Jack tried to meet the elder’s gaze once again.

“Oh uh-”

Jack patted one side of his bed, signaling the brunette to take a seat.

“You’re too polite sometimes,” The younger boy giggled.

“I’m sorry, I guess um- I don’t know, I just-”

“Alex, are you okay?” Jack gave him a concerned look.

“I’m fine, I just, I get really nervous sometimes. I don’t like making any bad impressions on anyone. I guess sometimes I worry about what people might think about me,” Alex looked at Jack.

“That’s normal Alex, and don’t worry about what I think about you. They’re good things, all good things,” The younger boy reassured him.

“Yeah, it’s just first impressions make a great impact,” Alex met Jack’s dark brown eyes. He’d never really paid attention to them till now. They were big, dark, and filled of something, he just didn’t know what.

Knocks began to interrupt the silence of the apartment. It was the pizza Jack ordered for themselves. Alex greeted the delivery boy, and paid for the pizza as he promised. He placed the order on the black, rectangular, glass topped dining table Jack owned.

“Pizza’s here!” Alex chanted, walking back to younger boy’s room.

“Awesome,” Jack grinned as he walked right behind the older man.

They both help set up and took a seat on opposite sides of the table. Alex was the first one to take a slice. Jack just sat there with a blank expression as if he were waiting for something.

“You don’t like peperoni?” Alex inquired.

“N-no it’s not that-”

“What’s wrong Jack?” The brunette boy raised an eyebrow.

“I-it’s just, I haven’t shared a meal with someone in such a long time,” Jack looked up at Alex.

“Ah, I know how you feel. I guess I’m just too hungry to think,” Alex rubbed his neck.

“The last t-time I did was-“ The dark haired boy turned his head and glanced at the window on the other side of the room.

“I’m here, I’ll listen,” Alex reassured him.

Jack pushed his black bangs out his face and sighed.

“It’s been more than five years since I broke up with my girlfriend. Her name was Lisa. We met our freshman year and started dating during junior year. She was so sweet and really pretty. She wasn’t selfish and always cared for others. I was certain she was the one for me. She was perfect in my eyes, but when we graduated and she said she wanted to go out of state to study. She broke up with me. She said she couldn’t handle the long distance. It was ‘too cliché’ and she said I’d be able to find someone else. That night I met you, I saw her for the first time again in five years. She looked so different. Her smile was the same, but she wasn’t the same person to me anymore,” Jack felt tears beginning to form in his eyes.

“J-jack I’m so sorry that happened to you,” Alex stopped eating at this point.

“It’s not your fault to be sorry Alex. It’s mine, I think I didn’t love her enough like I should have. I didn’t treat her like the princess she deserved to be treated as. I wasn’t worth her or her time,” He rubbed his eyes.

“Jack don’t say that. It’s all the contrary. She didn’t treat you the way you deserved. She left you for some petty reason. Her future was important yes, but the person she loved should be just as important. She couldn’t think of you moving with her? Or for you guys to keep in touch while she was gone? And visit each other when you had the chance. Long distance relationships are difficult to manage. But when you truly love someone it shouldn’t matter. I would’ve said ‘If these sheets were the states, and you were miles away. I’d fold them end over end to bring you closer to me.’ She was too shallow to realize how much she was hurting you. Things happen for a reason Jack, and her leaving you happened because you were destined to meet someone who was worth your time and vice-versa,” Alex looked right into Jack’s teary eyes, hoping his words help ease the boy’s pain.

“A-Alex I-”

“I know what I said was a bit too harsh Jack. I’m sorry, but you needed to hear that. Imagine if you would have done something to yourself because of her. She isn’t worth your tears, and definitely not worth you inflicting any pain on yourself. I might not know too much about you. But I can tell you’re a pure person, who is worth a lot more than you think.” Alex gave Jack a small smile.

“Um- A-lex, th-thank you,” The boy stammered as a few tears streamed down his face. He felt his cheeks warm up out the embarrassment he felt, crying in front of his new roommate.

He must definitely think I’m pathetic.

“Oh, and one more thing Jack,” Alex rose from his chair to sit next to the younger man. He wrapped on arm around his shoulder and looked him in his swollen eyes.

“Never, ever think you’re pathetic. You’re a human with feelings. It’s okay to feel this way. Just remember that I’m here for you,” Alex wrapped his other arm around Jack, giving him a hug from a very awkward angle. Yet, it did help Jack feel so much better, it's as if he read his mind somehow and knew exactly what to do and say to make him feel better. All his doubt about Alex was now gone.

I’m happy I met you too Alex.

Don't worry, sincerely I prefer read a good chapter after a while than a shitty one immediately (if that even makes sense, I'm sorry but I'm tired so my mind is pretty fucked up). And I hope the things you're going through will work out :)
