Sometimes, The Sickness is The Cure

Would You Take Me Home?

One more reason I should never have met you
Just another reason I could never forget you

After Jack’s shower, he began to remember why he didn’t commit suicide that Sunday evening. It was because of Alex. His intervention kept Jack from taking his own life. But was Alex’s intervention really worth anything? Did it mean anything? Alex had no clue what Jack was going to do that night. Was it a sign? Fate?

The last time Jack saw Alex was at his performance last night. He didn’t learn too much about Alex. All he found out was that Alex was Twenty-Five-years-old. Just two years older than Jack, and that he writes his own music. They also shared the same music taste. That was really the only conversations he had with Alex.

Jack liked it that way. He didn’t want to get any closer to Alex, because he was scared. Even though Alex stopped him from committing suicide that night, it really didn’t change Jack’s mind. He was still determined to end it all. If he got any closer to Alex, he might end up hurting him. He didn’t want to be his friend and then be gone all of a sudden. Jack didn’t want to hurt Alex in that way. He was a great guy, and Jack had no real reason to live. He didn’t want his own death to affect Alex in any way.

Just as Jack was walking to the medicine cabinet his phone began to ring. Jack left the restroom and entered his bedroom to retrieve the electronic urgency.

It was Alex.

“Hello?” Jack answered.

“Hey, um, I uh- Are you busy?” The brunette stammered.

“Um, No- Not really no. What’s up?” Jack scratched his short beard.

God dammit, I should’ve said I was…

“I- uh- Can I come over?… I have to ask you for a favor,” Alex asked hesitantly.

Jack was astonished out his mind. This was the second time Alex had become another intervention. He should at least help him, it was only one favor he was asking for anyway. It wouldn’t hurt to help. He was unsure of helping Alex or not, but did anyway.

“Sure, I don’t work, so I’ll be here all day. What time?”

“Is now an okay time?” Alex asked.

“Yeah, I’ll be here,” Jack nodded, as if the brunette could see him.

“Th-thanks man,”

“No problem,” Jack hung up the phone and walked towards his closet picking out his clothes for the day. A simple white V-neck and some tight gray jeans.

He began to pace back in forth in his small living room arguing with himself. Was it really a good idea to help Alex? The guy he was trying to get away from, nothing personal of course. It was just that, Jack couldn’t fully compute the situation he was in.

Alex…

A few knocks hit the front door of Jack’s decent looking apartment. He looked through the peep hole to see the nervous brunette, looking down, twiddling his thumbs and then looking back up.

“Hey,” Alex smiled as Jack opened the door. Their eyes met, and it took Jack almost a minute to reply.

“Hi, um come in,” Jack smirked as he moved out the older man’s way.

“I’ve brought you home so many times and I never realized how nice this place was,” Alex said marveling over the apartment.

“It’s not too fancy, and you’ve only brought me home like three time,” Jack laughed as he invited the brunette to take a seat on his cheap leather couches.

“Yea, well I have to compliment you as much as possible and get you to like me,” Alex smirked, looking over at Jack on the opposite side of that couch.

“Why’s that?” Jack couldn’t help but laugh a little at the way Alex was mooching… or flirting.

“Well, you see- Um I- I kind of um, man you know…. This is too much to ask from you, never mind,” Alex ended looking down at the white carpet that covered Jack’s apartment.

“Are you sure? You’ve helped a lot Alex. I don’t mind doing one favor for you. It’s really the least I could do,” Jack looked over at the once again nervous brunette.

“Jack I- I used to live at a house with a lot different people. Similar to an apartment complex, but a lot less fancy. Kind of the place you would find a bunch Mexicans who just moved to the U.S. to work. That kind of place. The old lady who was renting me a room there was really nice. She helped a lot of us get back on out feet or whatever. I’ve been living there since I was nineteen after my parents kicked me out for not going to college. Anyway- The other day I was going back home and a bunch of those guys were all drunk doing whatever the fuck they wanted. I was just kind of minding my own business, you know? So I went inside and one of them was um- having sex with some bitch or whatever and I really didn’t mean to walk into that. But, who wouldn’t have if they were fucking in the living room? So he got pissed, and got up to punch me or whatever and I tried to defend myself and in the end the lady kicked both of us out,” Alex gave Jack a concerned look.

“When did this happen?” Jack asked.

“Last night,” Alex replied, rubbing his neck.

“So you don’t have a place to stay?” Jack inquired.

“Yeah…” Alex glanced at Jack, hoping he knew the point he was trying to get to.

“You can stay here Alex, you really didn’t have to give an explanation. It is getting kind of lonely here anyway.” Jack replied.

Shit.
Fuck.
What did I just do?
I wanted to get away from the guy, now I’m letting him live with me.
But… he needs me, he needs a place to stay.

“Really Jack? I promise I’ll pay rent and bills. Whatever you need me too. I don’t have a girlfriend nor friends, so don’t expect unexpected guests.” Alex eagerly replied.

“It’s the least I could do I mean you’ve-“ saved my life… twice… “Helped me too.” Jack said.

“Jack, I’m so happy I could just cry!”

“Nah man, there’s no need for that. It’s just a favor. I mean I have two bedrooms. A roommate wouldn’t be too bad to have,” Jack half smiled. Maybe having Alex around won’t be too bad. He doesn’t really have friends either.

Maybe Alex is his reason to live….

“Sorry, I just I’m so glad I met you,” Alex smiled, his eyes began to water. ”I only work at the pub on weekends, but I’ve been looking for a stable job. Either way, I will pay rent,”

“Why don’t you apply at the music store I work at? We do need more employees, and clearly you know a thing or two about music,” Jack asked.

“I should! Ah, this is great. You’re so nice and I’m over here being such a mooch. I’m sorry,” Alex grinned.

“No, Alex you’re not. It’s okay to need things sometimes. I mean I’m here, and I can help you so don’t even worry about it.” Jack walked to the kitchen to grab two cold cokes out of his fridge, offering one to Alex.

“I used to work at this coffee place for a while, but I got fired because some bitch went in there drunk being really hysterical. She kept yelling ‘Where is he?’ and kept saying some guy’s name I don’t remember. Anyway, she took her anger out on me and I yelled at her telling her to leave. She slapped me and I slapped her back. I surprised she didn’t press charges against me. I got fried, because they thought she was my girlfriend and I was disrespecting my work place by bringing personal affairs.” Alex yawned then took a sip of the soda.

“Wow, sounds crazy. When did that happen?” Jack asked.

“About a few weeks ago, maybe three?” Alex looked up trying to remember.

“Well hopefully we won’t have to deal with any of that kind bull shit at Horizons” Jack laughed.

“That’s where you work? I love that place! How come I’ve never seen you there before?” Alex looked surprised.

“I work in the back most of the time, so that’s probably why,” Jack took a drink of his own soda.

“No wonder you looked oddly familiar at the pub that one day, I might’ve seen you once, just never really paid any attention,” Alex squinted his eyes.

“Maybe” Jack smirked
.
“Well, I have all my stuff in my car. Is it okay if I-”

“I’ll help you,” Jack rose from the couch heading towards the front door.

“Thanks man, I don’t know what I would’ve done without you,”

Same here Alex…

“It’s no problem,” Jack grinned as they both walked out of the door.
