Thirty Nine

"Hey sweetie! How you feeling?" Bella asked Paige, smiling sweetly as she walked into the kitchen, Isobel in her arms. She began searching the room for Isobel's formula and bottles and was slowly beginning to get frustrated. Bella tried to keep the baby calm and show empathy towards Paige.

"I'm alright thanks.. how's Motherhood?" Paige nervously returned the smile. She walked up to Bella and began to help her search for the things that she needed. "Here." Paige pulled out the formula from one of the many kitchen cupboards.

"Thanks babe. Oh, it's great. Seriously. Wonderful." Bella glared then laughed slightly. "No, it is good. Just need a rest. Anyway.. I heard you go downstairs last night. What was wrong?" Bella asked with a concerned look, whilst bouncing the baby up and down on her hip. "Damn it all to hell, where the fuck are the bottles?!" Bella seemed to be getting frustrated.

"Don't worry about it, really. I'll tell you later, I promise." Paige gave Bella a wary smile. "You're busy right now, and it's a long story. So just get on with what you're doing and I'll tell you all about it when you're.. less stressed out." She laughed nervously.

"Paige, you do know I will always have time for you.. don't you?"

"Of course I do."

Alex came trudging down the stairs, dismay written all over his face. He walked over to Bella and Paige, and kissed Isobel on the forehead. Although the whole "not-having-sex-for-a-while" thing was annoying him to high hell, being a Daddy to his little bundle of joy was the best thing in the world for him. He reached out his arms and gave a questioning stare to Bella, who nodded and smiled, mouthing the words "thank you" as she handed the baby over to him.

"Do you know where the bottles are, baby? I can't find them anywhere." Bella said with a mixture of frustration and loss of hope, as she wiped her brow.

"Tell you what, you go for a nice hot bath or something, and I'll take care of it, okay?" Alex leaned forward to Bella and gave her the softest kiss. She smiled up at him and reaching one hand behind his head, stroked his hair and nuzzled her nose against Isobel's. Then taking Paige's hand, she walked off down the corridor, far away from the four boys.

"Okay, are you going to tell me what's wrong now? Whilst I have a while?" Bella frowned, pursing her lips and resting her hands on her hips. Her fingers were tapping against her skin as Paige chewed her cheek.

"I don't know." Paige fiddled with her hands, her head hung as she looked down at her feet.

"Look Paige, I don't know what's going on but you know I'm always here for you, don't you?" She moved her arms and stepped closer towards Paige. "You're my best friend. I love you. And if there's something wrong, then I want to know!" Bella demanded. "Now stop hiding and tell me. Please. For the sake of both of us."

Paige looked up with a worried expression. How Bella wasn't guessing already was beyond her. Maybe she already knew, and was just waiting for Paige to tell her. Or maybe she really didn't have a clue.

"So what was Paige talking to you about then?" Zack interrogated Jack, eyeing him up suspiciously.

"Dude, it's up to Paige to tell you. I'm not gonna force her to tell you. But it's nothing to worry about. Just chill out." Jack placed a reassuring hand on Zack's shoulder, to which he smiled and shrugged it off.

"I know, I just don't like it when she doesn't talk to me. I just want to make sure she's okay, and I feel like she's kinda.. I don't know.. pulling away again."

"Trust me bro, she isn't. Everything will be fine. Quit your worrying."

"I wish it was that easy."

"Why are you so on edge anyway?" Jack raised an eyebrow.

"I just.. had a surprise lined up." Zack lowered his head, with a smirk on his face.

"Paige, why didn't you tell me sooner! I thought that might be what was up with you, but I thought you were just being a dick and ignoring me.. oh my God." Bella shoved Paige playfully. "So what are you going to do?"

"Well Jack said he would take me -"

"Jack said? What about me?!" Bella's face dropped. Paige could tell this was a look of sincere hurt that she was dealing with.

"I'm sorry, Bella. I just.. didn't want to bring you down. You seemed so happy."

"No. It's fine. Really. So carry on." Bella croaked, damning the frog in her throat for giving her away.

"He said he would take me to get a test."

"Oh. Okay. When are you going?" Bella's face dropped even more.

"Well.. that's the thing.." Paige gulped as she tried to keep eye contact with Bella. "See.. I was hoping now that I've told you.. I.. I was hoping.. you would take.. me?" She watched Bella's face light up slightly.

"Won't Jack be upset that you're ditching him and changing plans?"

"No, he's the one who encouraged me to tell you. He said that if I hadn't told either you or Zack, then he would take me."

"Wait, hold up. You haven't even told Zack yet?!" Bella squealed in annoyance. "Oh my God, Paige! Why not?!"

Paige put herself through the whole ordeal of explaining herself again, trying not to cry through emotion and explaining to Bella why she couldn't tell Zack just yet. She explained how she was scared that she would get his hopes up, and that she was scared she would push him away. Paige explained how she didn't want to be pregnant, because she didn't want to replace the baby that she had lost. She explained how at the same time though, she did want to be pregnant because she felt like she missed her chance. Paige explained how she didn't want to push Zack away by not telling him, and knew that she needed to find out as soon as possible, which is why she wanted to get a test taken. Then she went on to explain everything she felt whilst watching Bella give birth, and how she knew that there had been some strange co-incidences and that she had convinced herself that co-incidences is all they were.

Bella covered her mouth with her hands the entire time, gasping and trying not to let the tears fall, as they bulged out of her eyes. When Paige had finished talking, she said nothing. She did nothing. But after a few silent seconds, eventually she reached out to Paige and pulled her in tight.

"Come on, let's go." Bella grabbed Paige's hand once again, and dragged her upstairs to get ready. Once they were dressed and feeling like they looked acceptable enough to step foot outside of the house, they headed for the car and Bella drove the two of them away.

Comments

I just read this story and its prequel and sincerely loved them both. You're an amazing writer, and these stories dealt with a lot of emotions, ranging from sad to loving and I just really enjoyed them both. You captured both of these themes really well. It took me a few chapters to get into the first story, but once I did, I was hooked and just kept reading until I finished this one. All within... two days I believe, I just couldn't stop reading it.
Even though it's been a few years since you've posted them, I just thought I would leave a comment and let you know I really enjoyed them. Great job with them. Just wanted to show people like me are still stumbling across them and enjoying them. <3
I'm bummed to see you haven't written anything else; if you ever choose to one day, let me know and I will for sure read what you have. You're a very talented writer and I would love to read more of your writing. No pressure though, lol.
