A Walking Travesty

In Love

“Jack I can’t study anymore.” I groan, shutting my Biology book.

“I was waiting for you to cave.” He grins. “My brain has been killing me for the past 30 minutes.”

Tomorrow Jack and I have a biology test that we have been studying for, ever since we got home from school. His mom has been home, catching up on laundry. As for my brother, he seems to be staying at Jason’s house more frequently. It doesn’t bother me, but I don’t want Jack’s mom getting uncomfortable, so I plan to talk to him tomorrow.

Jack grabs the books we were studying from and starts to put them away right as his mom makes her way into the room.

“Had enough yet bookworms?” She grins.

“Plenty.” Jack groans. “What’s for dinner?”

His mom hesitates for a moment. “Well actually, I’m going out to dinner tonight. I was going to leave some money for you and Emma to order something.”

“Oh.” Jack frowns. He sets the backpack by his door.

“I can make something really quickly if you want me too…” She suggests.

“No.” I pipe in. “Don’t worry about it. Go have fun. Jack and I will figure something out.”

She looks at me gratefully. “Thank you. I’ll be back later on tonight. Call me if you need anything. Love you two.”

She kisses us on the forehead before flittering out of the room and into her bedroom to get ready.

“I think she’s dating again.” Jack says simply.

“Are you okay with that?” I ask him, tugging at his hand so he sits with me on the bed.

“I don’t care. My dad was a jerk so I wish she would. What bothers me is that she isn’t being honest with me about it. I wouldn’t care. She isn’t even giving me the chance to react to it.” Jack shrugs, snuggling his head against my shoulder.

I lean against his headboard, spreading my legs out in front of me. I motion for him to come to me and he does. Jack lays his back against my stomach, his head resting on my shoulder.

“Maybe you should bring it up with her.” I suggest while playing with his hair. “Just tell her how you feel.”

“I don’t feel like I should have to though.” Jack whines.

“Explain that to her too. Tell her it bums you out she didn’t give you a chance to react. Just wait for her to come home and you can talk to her about it tomorrow.” I kiss the top of his head.

I love holding him like this. It’s as if he’s a big baby and needs to be in my arms. Jack is always there for me with the big things, so when I can be there for him like this, it makes me so happy.

“I will.” He sighs, still a little bummed.

“Hey. Cheer up goofball.” I nip his ear lightly. “We have the house to ourselves tonight. We can do whatever we want. We live together. You know how many teenage couples would kill for this?”

“True.” Jack rolls over and hovers over me. “So what do you propose we do tonight?”

I lace my arms around his neck. “I was thinking I could make you dinner. Whatever you want, I’ll make it. After we can cuddle and watch a movie, take a bath, do whatever you want babe.”

“Whatever I want for dinner?” He grins at me goofily.

“As long as it’s sold in local grocery stores than yes.” I look at him cautiously.

“Damn. I wanted cow brains.” He frowns sarcastically. “I like easy foods. Macaroni and cheese works.”

“As for the meat?” I ask.

“Corndogs.” His eyes light up. “I haven’t had those since I was like…10.”

“Let’s get grocery shopping then.” I giggle, leaning up to kiss him.

We crawl off the bed and slip on some shoes. I basically run into Jack’s mom as she hobbles through the hallway, trying to slip on her other heel.

“Where you guys headed off to?” She asks while slipping on the shoe with the help of the wall.

“Grocery store.” Jack smiles at her lifelessly. “We are going to make dinner.”

“Okay sweetie. Money is on the counter.” She kisses him on the cheek quickly and makes her way out of the door without another word.

Jack half smiles at me, clearly a little peeved still. I slip my hand into his, grab the money, and drive off with him to the grocery store.

After about 45 minutes, Jack and I are back in the kitchen with a little more food then we intended on buying. We ended up buying the macaroni and corndogs, along with chocolate ice cream, a bag of Dorito’s, and a 2 liter of Dr. Pepper. He cheered up a lot more when he realized what a good night we are actually going to have.

“Can I help you babe?” He asks me with a goofy grin.

“Just put the ice cream away. I’ll take care of the rest.” I lean up on my tippy toes to kiss his cheek lightly.

I boil a pot of water for the macaroni and start the oven for the corn dogs. As I wait for them to be ready, I unload the rest of the groceries. The oven beeps after a few minutes, signaling it’s ready. I slip 6 corndogs onto a metal pan and into the oven, figuring Jack will want more than a few. As I wait for the water to boil, I feel a pair of arms wrap around my waist.

“I love you.” Jack murmurs in my ear. “I seriously do. I have the best girlfriend in the world.”

I lean against his chest and smile. “I love you more.”

The water starts to boil so I pour the pasta into the pot. Jack’s arms don’t leave my waist the entire time as I stir the noodles. He pecks my temple randomly, constantly reminding me of his love for me.

These are the moments I live for. The little things. You could not give me a greater gift in this world then making Jack feel happy. I’m doing such a simple thing for him, but it clearly means a lot to him. I could see myself doing this forever.

“What are you thinking about?” He asks me, noting my distant stare.

“You.” I lean my head against his chest and look up at him. “I just love that something as simple as this makes you happy. I love these moments with you.”

He grins down at me and kisses me softly. “Creepy. It’s like you were reading my mind.”

“Go find something to watch on TV. I’m almost done here.” I shove my butt against his legs, signaling for him to go.

As he leaves the kitchen, I grab out two plates for us. The oven timer beeps and I take the corndogs out carefully. I set them on the counter and drain the macaroni. As I start to mix the cheese and pasta together, Jack comes hopping in the kitchen.

“It smells so good.” He groans. “What can I do to make this go faster.”

“Easy there.” I laugh. “Go ahead and make us our drinks and take them to where we are eating. Take the silverware too. I’ll take care of the rest and meet you in there.”

Jack follows my instructions and quickly sets everything up. I pile our plates up with food and carry them to his bedroom. We set the food in front of his bed on the floor and Jack hits play on the Xbox. For the next 30 minutes, we eat and watch Aladdin. Jack raves about how good the food is and I simply thank him, assuring him it wasn’t a big deal. We eat until our stomachs are full and can’t fit another bite.

“So. Full.” Jack groans as he pushes his plate out of the way.

“I hear you.” I lie on the floor, pulling my shirt up so I can rub my stomach.

“Do you want to finish the movie?” Jack asks, clearly not wanting to.

“Nah.” I smile softly.

“I’ll take you up on that bath?” His eyes twinkle playfully.

“Deal.” I grin. “I’ll take care of the dishes and you go get the bath ready.”

We go our separate ways, both on a mission. It doesn’t take but a few minutes to load the dishwasher and put away leftovers. I wipe down the counters and finish cleaning the kitchen just as Jack rounds the corner wearing a towel around his waist.

“Ready?” He smiles.

“I see you are.” I giggle gesturing to the towel.

I throw the rag in the sink and follow Jack to the bathroom. He passes by the usual bathroom we share and leads me through his mom’s room. We walk through double doors and into his mom’s bathroom where Jack has filled her giant Jacuzzi bathtub with bubbles and hot water.

“What if she comes home?” I bite my lip looking up at him.

“She texted me saying she won’t be home tonight.” He smiles sadly.

My heart breaks for him a little, but I don’t let him see it. I grab the towel from his waist and pull it down.

“Get in.” I slap his butt playfully.

He laughs and shakes his head as he lowers himself into the steaming water. I take my clothes off quickly and follow him into the water. It takes a second for my body to tolerate the hot water, but when I get used to it, it’s relaxing. We sit in silence for a few moments, just enjoying the relaxation. After a little bit, Jack floats over to my side of the tub and slips an arm around my shoulders.

“I can see myself doing this with you forever.” He says simply.

“Same here.” I smile.

“I’m serious though. I like this. We work so well together. I don’t have any problems with us as a couple. You hear about couples getting tired of each other, or cheating on each other. I just don’t see that happening with either of us. I love you too much to look at another girl in any way. You’re all I want and I would never do anything to screw that up.” Jack kisses my temple tenderly.

“I love you so much.” I nuzzle my head against his shoulder. “I wouldn’t trade you for anyone or anything.”

I relax against Jack as he hums softly in my ear, totally and 100% content. I’m in love with this moment. I’m in love with Jack.
