A Walking Travesty

Gestures

Jack has brought me to my house to pick up my belongings that I wanted to take to his house while my parents are at work. It’s our lunch break and Alex insisted on coming with. We are walking through the empty house to my room. As soon as we hit my bedroom Alex lies on my bed. His long sleeved white shirt clings to his body and his faded jeans have grass stains. His dirty Converse are planted firmly at the end of my bed. I cringe at the thought of him lying in my bed. Alex stares at my room around him.

“This is actually a pretty sick room.” He chuckles. “I can definitely see myself living in here.”

“So happy to have your approval.” I mutter sarcastically as I rummage through my closet to grab a suitcase.

He laughs and shakes his head at me. “You sure are one stubborn girl.”

I roll my eyes and turn around, running into Jack. He slips his arms around me and kisses my lips softly. In that moment, I felt like we were the only two people there. That was, until Alex did a sarcastic whistle. Jack laughs and turns to help me pack the suitcase. I grab the remote off of my bed stand and turn on my surround sound music. Immediately, Blink 182 plays. Alex whoops from my bed and throws his fist in the air with happiness. Jack rummages through the top drawer and immediately blushes when he realizes it’s my underwear drawer. I giggle and lean into Jack so that Alex can’t hear me.

“Pick which ones you want to see me in.” I blush, not understanding where that confidence came from.

Jack grins and winks at me before turning to the drawer and picking what he wants. As I rummage through my shirt drawer, the smell of cigarettes fills my nostrils. Immediately, my head snaps towards Alex who sure enough, is smoking a cigarette.

“Alex. No smoking in my room.” I jump up and go to grab it out of hands.

“Easy princess. Shit.” He mutters. “Go back to packing with your boyfriend.”

“Put the cigarette out.” I glare at him.

“I. Will.” He glares back at me and signals for me to turn around.

I roll my eyes and turn around back to Jack. I hear Alex sharply inhale and turn around to see him rolling his white sleeve down. I bunch my eyebrows in confusion and Alex’s eyes dart up to meet mine.

“Didn’t I say go help your boyfriend?” He jumps up from the bed and approaches me, getting right in my face.

“Yeah sorry.” I mutter looking down at his Converse.

His foot nudges mine, making me look up at him. His eyes are a little softer, but still stern. “What did you see?”

“Nothing.” I reply simply. “I just saw you pulling your sleeve down.”

“I had an itch.” He mumbles.

I nod and he leaves my room, bumping my shoulder with his. I roll my eyes and turn back to Jack. He is sitting on the floor crisscross, going through my pajama drawer. I sit on his lap and his arms encircle my body pulling me closer to him.

“I love you.” I smile into his neck and nibble it softly.

“I love you more than all the stars in the sky.” Jack strokes my hair gently.

I turn back to me dresser and rummage through some drawers, still on Jack’s lap. We finish packing my suitcase and stand up slowly. I rummage through my drawers and grab my phone charger, laptop, laptop charger, iPod, earbuds, and some other odds and ends. I grab all my makeup I might want, DVD’s, books, anything I can think of. I sigh, turn the light off, and grab one of the bags. Jack carries the heavy suitcase to his car. On my way to the car, I see Alex sitting on the kitchen counter, back turned to me. I put my bag down on the floor and walk towards him. He has a bottle of my parent’s Vodka in his hands.

“Really Alex? Do you not have any boundaries?” I groan and grab the bottle from his hands. “This is my parent’s Vodka, not yours.”

“Why the fuck would you leave this? Free booze, kick ass room, high class shit man.” He gestures to the house.

“Because my parents are judgmental alcoholics and I’m sick of their shit.” I grumble as I fill the Vodka bottle with water a little, hoping to match whatever the level was before.

“Shit. Sorry to hear that.” Alex says genuinely as he hops off the counter. “I know how that is.”

“What do you mean?” I turn around and ask to a now empty kitchen. I sigh and put the bottle back to the liquor cabinet.

I walk back to where my bag is, but it isn’t there. Confused, I walk towards the car to see if Jack came back for it. I watch as Alex carries it to the truck and places it in the backseat. I smile softly at his gesture and walk to the truck. Jack’s leaning against it and Alex is shutting the backseat door.

“Ready to go?” I ask them. They both nod and Jack and I jump in the front seat.

Alex jumps in the back and we drive to Jack’s quietly. I hear Alex’s iPod blasting in his ears from the front seat, but can’t quite make out the music. We pull up to Jack’s and quickly unload the truck. Alex stays in the kitchen, loitering around waiting for Jack and I to finish. I go into Jack’s room and place my suitcase by the dresser.

“Not so fast.” He smiles. Jack opens two of his dresser drawers to reveal their emptiness. I grin from ear to ear and look at him.

“Are you sure? I have no problem living out of my suitcase.” I say slowly.

“Don’t worry about it. I’d love to share these drawers with you.” Jack slips his arm around my waist and kisses my cheek.

My phone’s alarm goes off, notifying me that our class is going to start back up in 15 minutes. “I’ll unload later tonight. We have to get back to class.” I say, flying out the bedroom door.

“Emma wait.” Jack grabs my arm. “Let’s go on a date tonight.”

“Sure.” I smile and place a kiss on his lips gently.

We walk to the kitchen where Alex is looking at the pictures on the fridge. “You were a cute fuck.” Alex laughs, gesturing to a baby picture of Jack. “What the hell happened?”

“Fuck you.” Jack laughs back. “Let’s get back to class.”

Alex nods and walks out of the house with us. We drive back to school quietly as always. There’s just not much to talk about with the three of us. I relax into the seat, waiting for us to get to school. We pull up shortly and park. Alex jumps out first and waits for Jack and I to get out.

“I’m out of here.” Alex turns to Jack and shakes his hand. “I’ll see you later. Bye Emma.” Alex throws his arm around me and squeezes me close, awkwardly and walks away.

“That was weird.” I shudder.

“It was a nice gesture.” Jack shrugs. “Let’s go.” Jack and I walk to our next class hand in hand, basically fused together any way we can be.

“What do you want to do tonight?” I ask him.

“A surprise.” He grins at me. “You’ll love it don’t worry.”

“Dress code?” I ask happily.

“Clothing optional.” He winks. “No, actually clothing mandatory. Just wear something comfortable.”

And with that, he plants a kiss on my cheek and heads off to his class. I smile softly and walk to my class on cloud nine. I’m too stoked for tonight.
