A Walking Travesty

Talk To Me, Please.

“Talk please.” I whisper, not daring to make eye contact.

Jack and I stand at the doorway to his house. He has closed the door behind him, not letting me inside. We stand a foot apart almost as if we are total strangers. In this moment, I have never been so scared. The wind whistles around us sending a chill down my spine. Finally, I look up at him. His eyes are darting around nervously and his hands are shoved deep in his pockets.

“Jack. Please talk to me.” I beg on the verge of tears.

“Not here.” Jack mumbles.

He grabs his truck keys from his pockets and hops into the drivers seat. I don’t argue and climb into the passenger seat. We drive a few minutes north before Jack pulls his car off the road and onto a dirt path.

“What the fuck Jack?” I stutter as the truck hops up and down on the dirt path.

“Trust me.” He replies.

I sit in silence as the truck bumps along the path. Trees pass us and finally we arrive to wherever he wants us to be. Jack stops, takes a u-turn, and backs his truck up. He stops and climbs out. He jogs to my door and opens the door for me. I climb out and walk with Jack on the dirt. I look in front of me and see a giant lake. Above us, enormous trees for canopies. The light plays through the branches casting unusual shadows on the dirt ground. It is completely silent out here. You can only hear the sounds of birds chirping or leaves crunching beneath our feet.

“Where are we?” I ask him softly.

“My mom came across this place the other day on her morning run and told me about it. I thought you might like to spend some time out here with me.” He shrugs and kicks a rock.

We stand in silence side by side and look at the water.

“Is this where you kill me and throw me in this lake for no one to ever find my body?” I ask half joking, trying to lighten the mood.

Jack busts out laughing and shakes his head. He reaches into his truck and pulls out a fold out lawn chair. He unfolds it, facing his truck.

“Sit.” He motions for me to sit.

I sit down and stare at him questioningly. He jumps up on his truck and pulls back the truck bed cover. I can’t see what he’s doing in there, but he pops back out with a guitar in hand. He perches himself on the bed of his truck and begins to play without saying a word.

You get lost on your way back home, just about anywhere.
You sing off key to the radio, like nobody’s there.
And I love that your Sunday’s best is a holey pair of jeans
And I don’t stand a chance when you smile.

Yeah the longer that we’re together,
The good keeps on getting better,
I never thought that I would ever find someone like you.
Every day you show me I can,
Just when I think that I can’t love you anymore than I do, I do.

My eyes begin to well up with tears as he sings. His lyrics pierce my heart and overwhelm me. Did he just say love?

Jack finishes up the song, tosses the guitar back in the trunk, and quickly comes my way. He scoops me up in his arms and just holds me in the air. He kisses the side of my head softly and I sniffle.

“What song was that?” I ask, trying to avoid this talk.

“I Do, by A Rocket to the Moon. Now we still need to talk.” He reminds me.

“So talk.”

“Emma when I told you I loved you earlier, I meant it. I freaked out because I felt you freeze. I have never been so scared to say things when I’m around you. I’m terrified that if I say the wrong thing, you are going to leave me. Emma I fucking love you. If you don’t love me back yet, that’s fine. But please don’t let this be the end of us.” He whimpers the last words.

I attach my lips to his softly and kiss him with every emotion I have in my body. I pull apart from him to look him in the eyes. “I love you Jack. I love you so much.”

He grins and sets me down on the ground for me to stand. Jack leans down and kisses me. “I love you more Emma. Forever.”

I smile up at him and wrap my arms around his waist. My head rests against his chest as he wraps his long arms around me.

“So what now?” I ask.

“Well. If you don’t mind, I’d kinda like to stay the night here.” Jack suggests. “No funny business, don’t worry. My mom went on a business retreat for the weekend so if you don’t want to spend it out here, we can go to my house. Or I can take you home, it’s fine.”

“No. I like this.” I smile. “This will be our spot.”

Jack slips his hand into mine and walks me to the edge of the lake. We slip our shoes off and roll up our pants. I’m still in my pajamas from this morning, but he’s wearing a pair of jeans. We walk slowly in the water, letting the sand tickle our toes.

“So you took back saying ‘I love you’ because I froze?” I ask him quietly.

“I never really took it back. When you froze, it made me second-guess my words, not so much my feelings. I got nervous you were going to tell me this was moving too fast or you weren’t ready to take that step.” Jack stammers.

“Relax. You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me Jack. Yeah we are moving pretty fast, but a day with you feels like a month. I feel like I’ve known you for my entire life. I love you, okay?” I stop walking, grab both of his hands, and look up into his brown eyes.

He smiles softly. “I swear to god, I can’t get enough of that. You saying ‘I love you’ has to be the most perfect thing I have ever heard.” He leans down and kisses me.

“Even better than that song I played you this morning?” I ask with a smile on my face.

“That’s tough. But yes, definitely.” Jack grins and presses his forehead against mine.

We turn around and slosh through the water back to his truck. My stomach rumbles considering I haven’t eaten all day.

“How are we spending the night out here?” I asked, all of a sudden confused. We were literally in the middle of nowhere.

“You’ll see.” He winks at me with a devilish gleam in his eye.

I giggle and follow him back to the truck. He hops onto the bumper and reaches down to help me up. As soon as I bounce onto the bumper, I look into the bed of the truck and gasp.

The bed of the truck has a million different comforters, all layered on top of each other, creating a makeshift mattress. There are a few pillows, extra blankets to sleep under, and a cooler. Jack’s guitar sits in there as well as a stuffed bear. I glance up at Jack who is staring at my expressions, smiling like a damn fool.

“Happy one month.” He murmurs. “I figured this would make up for what happened earlier. Well, I hope it does at least.”

I hop into the bed of the truck and pull Jack in with me. Immediately, we lie down and I wrap my body around his. I sigh and look above us at the enormous trees as they play with the sunlight. The wind whistles softly causing the leaves to dance and crinkle. Jack kisses the top of my head softly and squeezes me.

“You hungry?” He mumbles in my ear.

“Starving.” I rub my stomach softly.

We sit up and Jack reaches to the cooler, pulling out its contents. Two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a giant bag of Baked Lays, two cupcakes, two Pepsi’s, and two waters.

“I also brought some clothes for us to sleep in so you don’t have to keep wearing those pajamas. I brought a pair of my sweatpants and a purple v-neck. It’ll be pretty big on you considering you’re half my size but it’s only for one night.” Jack smiles at me while handing me one of the sandwiches.

“Sounds perfect. Do you want to go for a little swim later maybe?” I wink up at him.

“Okay beautiful.” He kisses my temple with a mouthful of sandwich.

We eat quietly, enjoying the peaceful scenery. Our legs intertwine as we munch out on all the food Jack brought. Within 10 minutes, our sandwiches and half the bag of chips are gone. Both Pepsi’s are almost drained and the cupcakes remain untouched. I’m too full to even think about touching those and judging from the look on Jack’s face, he’s feeling the same way.

“So. Full.” He groans.

“Same.” I stretch and lie back down in the truck bed. Jack joins me and begins humming softly in my ear.

We spoon for a little, enjoying each other’s company until we decide it’s time to go swimming. Jack looks at me awkwardly.

“What?” I ask confused.

“I didn’t bring swim suits.” He blushes.

I pull my shirt over my head and slide my pants on, revealing my pink bra and matching cheeksters.

“Your point?” I stick my tongue out at him playfully.

His jaw drops and immediately he strips down to his boxers. We hop in the water and splash each other around. Jack grabs me all of a sudden and we sit on the sand, still in the water.

“Watch.” He points in front of us.

I stare in front of us, trying to figure out what he can possibly see. It looks to be just a bunch of trees. All of a sudden, the sun begins to set behind them. The sky becomes a pinkish orange shade as the sun snuggles lower and lower. We watch in silence, admiring the pure beauty of such a simple thing. After a few minutes, the sun disappears and leaves the sky the most incredible shade of orange I’ve ever seen.

“That was…” I mumble, unable to come up with a word.

“Perfect.” Jack finishes for me.

We sit in the water for a few more minutes but become a little uneasy, considering it was growing dark. Jack carries me back to the truck and reaches in to the back seat to grab out clothes.

“Turn around Barakat. Looks like I have to go commando now.” I complain jokingly.

Jack’s jaw drops yet again, but turns around. Quickly, I strip my bra and panties off and put on Jack’s clothes.

“You’re good.” I tell him as I throw my wet hair up into a bun.

He turns back around and grins at me. “Your turn to turn around. I’m apparently going commando too.”

I roll my eyes and turn around. While he changes, I shoot a text to my parents letting them know I am spending the night with Jack. When I hit send, Jack has changed, scooped me up, and thrown me in the back bed of the truck. We crawl under the covers and Jack snuggles me from behind. I reach out for the teddy bear.

“And this is?” I ask.

“Oh shit.” Jack reaches for it. “I forgot to give this to you. This was a teddy bear I’ve had since I was two. I thought I would give it to you on our one month since you are my Emmabear.” He snuggles it up against my chest.

“Jaaack.” I whine. “You are so incredibly amazing. Thank you. I’ll take care of it, I promise.”

“I’ll take care of you. I promise.” He whispers fiercely into my ear.

“I love you Jack.” I whisper.

“I love you more Em.” Jack pulls me closer against his body, intertwines our legs, and kisses the back of my head.

I fall asleep happily in the one person I love the most’s arms.
