I told him all about my past; about Ben, about Bradley, everything. He just listened, nodded in places, but never interrupted. When I was finished, we were both tearing up. "I know you've probably heard this a thousand times," he said, "but I know how you feel. I really do." And he started to open up to me.
When he was young, especially in middle school, he had started to isolate himself. He couldn't take the pressure of the world anymore. So he started self harming. He continued all through middle school, progressively getting worse, until he met Jack. Jack helped him through a lot, helping him back on his feet. Alex got back into music, and formed All Time Low. He let his emotions out through song, and it helped him get better. Not fully, but it helped.
"So the point is," he concluded, "to surround yourself with friends, and find your escape. And that escape should never be death."
I sobbed. "My escape isn't as strong as it used to be."
He nodded. "That's because you're losing faith in it. Think of all the things your escape has gotten you out of. Now imagine if you hadn't had that escape. Only then will you recognize the true power of that escape, in your case, music."
I laughed. "Wise words, zen master Gaskarth."
He smiled, "I am 100% serious, B. That's what helped me, and that's what's gonna help you. And even if I'm somewhere else, I'll be there for you. All you gotta do is call."
"I will, Alex. I definitely will." I smiled, and hugged him.
This night had been so different than I imaginied; so horrible in some ways, but so amazing and inspring in others. I felt like flying, I felt free.
