Chapter Fifty-Seven: When You Fall Asleep Tonight

Monday's were always the worst.

Jackie and I were at the house alone, because Jack was out shopping. I was sitting on the couch, watching Jackie color, but a knock on the door snapped me out of my daze. I stood up and approached the door, answering it. The person was turned around, but slowly faced me. When I saw his face, I immediately shut the door and locked it, and I ran around the house, making sure all the windows were closed and locked, and all the curtains were drawn.

I scooped Jackie up into my arms and sat on the couch, looking around as I took deep breaths. But unlucky for me, there was a window that didn't have curtains or blinds, and there he c was, staring at me with a malicious grin.

I shrieked and hauled my ass up the stairs while Jackie clung onto me. I entered the bedroom and sat on the bed, pressed against the pillows.

"Mommy, who was he?" Jackie asked, sounding beyond scared.

"That doesn't matter. Shh, I'm gonna call Jack," I said, my voice shaking. I slipped my phone out of my pocket and called Jack, holding the phone up to my ear. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

"Hey baby," he chirped.

"Jack, I need you to get home," I said.

"Why? What's wrong?" He asked, sounding panicked.

"He's here, Jack. I'm terrified," I whispered, and I felt a tear slip out of my eye.

"Who's 'he?' I'm on my way. Where are you?" He asked.

"Jackie and I are in our room. Please hurry, Jack," I sniffed. I heard his breath grow quicker, so I assumed he was running.

"I can't talk and drive, so I'm gonna hang up, but stay safe. I'll be there soon," he said, and he hung up. I set my phone on the bedside table to my right and opened my eyes.

"Hello, sweetheart," Mitchell said, and I screamed, desperately trying to burrow into the pillows behind me.

"How? How did you get in?" I asked as I held Jackie so she couldn't see him.

"It was only a foolish mistake you see, you left the back door unlocked," he said with a simple shrug. I sniffed and rocked her back and forth, trying to calm myself and her down. I was such a fucking idiot.

"You know, I always get what I want, Rebecca. So if you'd just make this easy, I can get out of here faster," he sneered, and I glared at him.

"What do you want, you sick bastard?" I asked. He only shrugged again.

"Not you... You're used material, so you're no good. But this one... She's perfect," he said, looking at Jackie like she was a sack of meat.

"You won't touch her!" I yelled, and I held her tighter. I could hear her crying, and I felt so bad. He only laughed.

"Sure. Just hand he over, you filthy bitch," he snarled.

"No," I said. He chuckled.

"Fine. I guess you'll have to do for now," he said with a simple shrug, and he c started to advance.

"No! Get away from us!" I said. He only ignored me and grabbed my ankle, causing me to shriek and try and free myself.

"Get away from mommy, kid.. unless you want to get hurt," Mitchell said, and I let my grip on her go slack. She ran to the corner of the room and stayed there, crying and shaking.

"Let go of me!" I cried, and I kicked him in the crotch with my free foot. He collapsed on the floor in pain, and I rushed off the bed and over to Jackie, picking her up and running down the stairs. Halfway down, I heard him get up, so I quickened my pace.

"Get back here, you fucking slut!" he growled, and I made a beeline for the front door as tears clouded my vision. My hands fumbled with the lock, but I unlocked the door and pulled it open, running out of it and across the street. I had no idea what was taking Jack so long, the store wasn't far.

But I ran up the neighbor's drive, and I knocked on their front door frantically. There was a car in the driveway, but apparently no one was home, so I booked it away from the house. Mitchell was closer than I thought, so when I looked back, he tackled me to the ground. I covered Jackie as best as I could with my arms as we took the fall, me landing painfully on the concrete in the middle of the road.

"Get off of me!" I sobbed. I tried to catch my breath while sobbing, but it was incredibly difficult. He forced my arms off of Jackie, and he pinned them above my head.

"Jackie! Get inside. NOW!" I bellowed, and she ran as fast as she could.

"Look at you. So precious. So beautiful. Such a shame your beloved boy toy isn't here right now. Oh what's this?" He asked, examining the engagement ring on my left hand.

"So you're married," he said.

"Engaged," I breathed out, struggling against him.

"Such a shame," he said quietly. He straddled me, and I didn't like it, so I spat in his face. He pushed my arms into the asphalt, and I whimpered as I felt a small rock break the skin on my right arm. It wasn't much, but it hurt.

"Knock it off," he growled, and he brought his right hand up and slapped my left cheek. His hand immediately returned to my arm, and I winced.

"Hey! Get off of her!" I heard Jack yell. His running footsteps were followed by two others, and I thanked whatever God there was that I had help. Mitchell was pulled off of me, and I took a deep breath as Jack pulled me up and into his tight embrace. I heard him sigh as he rubbed my back, and he rested his head on mine.

"Thank God you're okay," he whispered. I pulled away slightly and kissed him gently.

"I love you. What took so long?" I asked.

"I got pulled over for speeding, but I told the cops about your situation and to follow me. I told them they could arrest me if I was lying to them, so they surprisingly agreed, and they've just put Mitchell in the car," Jack said. One of the cops approached while the other stayed by the car.

"Who is he?" The cop asked.

"His name is Mitchell. I forgot his last name," I said.

"That's okay. Do know him like... personally?" The cop asked.

"We used to date," I said, and I felt Jack tense up. But then something dawned on me. Every relationship I'd been in, the guy has raped me. Except for Jack. That made me feel absolutely terrible. It made me feel disgusting, and used and violated.

"Becca," Jack whispered, shaking me out of my thoughts. I looked at the officer.

"I'm sorry... what?" I asked.

"Has this happened before?" He asked, and I nodded as tears filled my eyes.

"Except he got what he wanted last time. He had a partner to help him, and this time, he wanted my daughter," I said.

"What!?" Jack asked, and I nodded.

"He said she was perfect, but I wasn't having it," I said. The cop nodded as wrote down what I was telling him.

"Can you go get her for me?" He asked softly. I nodded and stepped out of Jack's arms. I approached the house and stepped inside, looking around for Jackie. She was cowering on the couch, and I approached her.

"Babe... there's someone who wants to talk to you," I said softly. She looked up at me with fear-filled eyes. I held my hands out to her, and she took them, and I wrapped her up in my arms. I returned outside and Jack took her from me.

"This nice man wants to ask you a couple questions," Jack told her, and she nodded and looked towards the police officer.

"What's your name, darling?" He asked her.

"Jackie," she muttered, obviously scared as she clutched onto Jack's shirt tightly.

"What a beautiful name, sweetheart-"

"Please... don't say that word," I muttered. The officer nodded and moved on.

"Can you tell me... did that man touch you?" He asked. Jackie shook her head.

"Did he talk to you?" He queried, and she nodded. He looked to me.

"What did he say?"

"He said, "'Get away from mommy kid, unless you want to get hurt,'" I said, and he wrote it down. The officer nodded to me, shook Jack's hand, and he took Jackie's small hand in his own, shakingit gently. He tipped his hat and returned to his partner.

I looked around the neighborhood and groaned. All of our neighbors were standing on their porches, trying to figure out what happened. The only people who weren't out were the people who lived across from us because apparently they weren't home.

"Fucking great," I said as the police drove away. I looked at Jack, who had a worried look on his face.

"Now we're gonna have to go to court," he said, and I nodded.

"Let's just hope we win," I sighed. I took Jackie from him, laced my fingers through his, and we returned to our home that I now feared. I would always remember what happened, because for some reason, it was burned into my mind, just like every other time. I laid down with Jackie on the couch, and I cried.

How could something like this happen again, and why did it?
