Chapter Thirty-Six: Too Much

"I've gotta go pick up Jackie. You wanna come?" I asked Jack as I looked for my keys.

"I'll go, baby. You stay here," he said, and I smiled as he kissed my lips gently.

"Alright. See you soon," I said, and Jack left.

While Jack was gone, I cleaned the house because let's be honest, it was filthy. I put our bedding in the washing machine, and I picked up all of Jackie's toys, putting them in her room. I vacuumed the living room, dusted all the tables, picture frames, and the entertainment center where our tv was placed, along with Jack's Xbox 360, a stereo system, and a DVD player.

I was so into cleaning that I didn't know that Jack had been gone for over an hour, and I didn't expect a phone call.

"Hello?" I asked after picking up the home phone.

"Yes, hi. Is Miss Rebecca Mayes there?" A woman's voice asked.

"Speaking," I replied.

"Great. Do you know Jack Barakat?" She asked.

"Yes I do. Who is this?" I asked, looking at the rag I had been using to dust.

"This is Baltimore Medical Center. Mr. Barakat was in a car crash," she said. My heart skipped a beat and then sped up, and my eyes widened. I was in shock.

"W-What!?" I asked, "I'll be there in a bit. Goodbye." I hung up, placed the phone back, and I tossed the rag in the kitchen sink. I grabbed my car keys, and I booked it to my truck, unlocking it as fast as I could. I pulled my phone out of my pocket as I got in, and I closed the door behind me. As I started the engine, the realization of what happened dawned on me, and my eyes filled with tears that didn't wait to fall, they just fell.

I dialed Alex's number and held the phone to my ear as I pulled out of the driveway, fresh tears running down my cheeks.

"Hey, Re-"

"Alex! Get to the hospital. Jack was in a car crash," I rushed out, and I hung up. I set my phone down and drove as fast as I could to the hospital, the tears never stopping.

When I got to the hospital, I parked and quickly rushed inside, not caring about the people who were staring at me. I rushed up to the front desk, and I quickly caught my breath.

"Jack Barakat, please," I said.

"First floor, room one-hundred and seven," the woman said, and I rushed off. When I found Jack's room, I burst in, breathing heavily, and I took in the scene in front of me.

Jack was sitting up in bed, a cup of Jello in his hand with a spoon stuck in it. He had bandages on his left arm, but that was about it.

"Jack!" I said, and I rushed over.

"Hey babe," he said, and my jaw dropped.

"What the fuck happened?" I asked. Before he could answer, Alex and Stephanie rushed in, both with worried expressions on their faces.

"Well, a car hit the passenger side of my car in the back. I only spun out. I didn't flip over or anything, don't worry," Jack said reassuringly, and he took his free hand and he wiped my tears away.

"That's it?" I asked.

"That's it," Jack said softly.

"You had us worried sick," Alex said as he and Stephanie stepped further into the room.

"Who called you?" Jack asked.

"I did," I said, "I was so worried, Jack. Don't you ever scare me like that again." Jack smiled warmly.

"I won't, Becca. I love you so much," he said.

"I love you too, Jacky. So fucking much," I said, and I pressed my lips to his gently. We kissed for a minute, pulling away when the door opened and closed.

"Are you his fiance?" The doctor asked. I nodded.

"Can I talk to them both privately for just a moment?" The doctor asked Alex and Stephanie, who both nodded and retreated to the hallway outside the room.

"Your name?" He asked me.

"Rebecca Mayes," I said.

"Miss Mayes, Mr. Barakat.. we're going to keep you here overnight, just in case something happens that we may have missed, alright?" He asked.

"Yeah. Will he be able to come with me tomorrow?" I asked.

"Most definitely. I'll give you some medicine to apply onto his arm, because it was pretty badly scratched. Against what? We don't know, but it's deep. Just apply the medicine and wrap it up in some clean gauze, and it should heal fine. If not, bring him in and we'll take a look, okay?" I nodded.

"So, there's no designated time to apply the medicine?" I asked.

"If you want, not saying you have to, you can apply it twice a day, morning and evening, each time with new gauze," he said. I nodded again. My phone rang in my pocket, so I pulled it out and checked the caller I.D.

"Hey Rian, what's up?" I asked as I held up a finger to Jack's doctor.

"Where are you? I thought you'd be picking up Jackie early, but you never arrived, so I drove over and neither of you were home," he said.

"We're both at the hospital," I said.

"Why? What happened?" Rian asked.

"Jack got in an accident on his way to yours. He's completely fine, just a gash on his arm," I said, though I was sorta doubting that that was it. It's pretty rare to walk away from a car crash with hardly a scratch.

"Okay. Cass and I will be there with Jackie in a bit then," Rian said.

"Sounds good. See you soon, Ri," I replied, and I hung up.

What a day.
