Maybe Next May

I woke up the next day barely remembering anything. My mother had heard me calling for her and she came rushing in, throwing her arms around me, and crying.

“Oh thank god! Baby who did this to you?”

That’s when I remembered everything. Alex, him hitting me, my head cracking open, Cass screaming. I just looked up at my mom and told her I didn’t remember. She had just sighed and told me that Cass and Rian had helped me get here. I picked up my phone and texted Cass.

‘Hey Cass, I’m awake. Thanks for getting me home and not telling my mom what happened.’

She texted back immediately.

‘Oh thank god, I was so worried! Rian and I are glad you’re doing okay. No problem, just rest up for now and we’ll see you when you come back to school.’

My mom had made me stay home from school for a whole week, even though I was feeling better after three days. I was finally going back today and I had texted Cass to tell her.

‘Good, um and Jack, we kind of said who did it. He’s suspended for three weeks.’

My stomach dropped. Why did they do that? I didn’t want Alex to hate me even more! I sighed but continued on my way to school, daily Rockstar in hand.

Once I got inside people stopped and stared. I felt a blush creep onto my cheeks and I looked down as I walked quickly to my locker. Once there I started putting books into it, only to be stopped by a hand on my shoulder. I flinched and stun around to see Zack standing there. He held his hands up in surrender.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. I heard about what happened, are you alright?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“I’m glad he’s gone. I promise I wont let him near you again.”

I smiled at him and he returned it.

“Thanks Zack.”

“Anytime.”

He messed up my hair gently and I made a noise of protest, trying to fix it best I could. He let out a laugh and that’s when I heard my name being called. I turned right when Cass flung her arms around my neck and practically chocked me. Rian a few steps behind with a grin from ear to ear, he greeted Zack.

“I’m so glad you’re back. How are you feeling?”

“Much better, thanks. How are you Ri? Your nose I mean.”

“Eh, it’s fine.”

The bell rung and I said goodbye to them before walking to my first hour. I sighed as I walked in and the teacher greeted me.

“Good to see you again Mr. Barakat. Glad you’re feeling better, go take a seat.”

I mumbled a thanks and started walking up towards my seat, only to stop dead in my tracks. Sitting right next to my seat was the one person I wasn’t expecting to be here. He looked back at me with pure shock written on his face that I'm sure resembled my own.
