Maybe Next May

I had walked into school with Rian, hand in hand. We had stopped by his locker to get a couple books then head to class. Only one problem, Alex Gaskarth and his group stopped us.

“Oh, Alex, hey! We were just about to come find yo-”

Rian was cut off by Alex punching him straight in the nose. I cried out as Rian fell to the ground. I went down with him to try and help him up. His nose was bleeding horrible, I truly hope it isn’t broken.

“Alex, what the hell?”

Jack showed up and helped Rian up, better than I had. That’s when Heath opened up his idiotic mouth.

“Ha! Looks like it’s your lucky day Gaskarth. Two nerds to beat up. Go on, do it.”

I stayed next to Rian as I watched Alex walking towards Jack. There was no way he would actually his Jack. Then again, he hit Rian without a reason.

“Look at how pitiful he looks!”

I sent Lisa a glare which everyone just laughed at. I looked back towards Jack and Alex. Jack whispered something to him.

“Alex! Why are you doing this? Please stop!”

My screams did nothing to slow him down. He pulled his fist back and hit Jack. Jack crashed into the lockers then the ground. The sound that came from his skull slamming on the ground was sickening. I watched as blood began to pool around it.

“Oh my god!”

Both me and Rian shot over to him. Rian began to support his head as I screamed for the nurse. I turned and looked at Alex, Lisa and Heath now gone with the rest of them. Probably to avoid expulsion. Alex had a look of pure shock and worry written on his face. I had never been so mad in my entire life. When Alex began to walk near us I shot forward and pushed him back, successfully making him stumble back a couple steps.

“Stay away! Just go! Run off to your whore of a girlfriend and your ass of a best friend! You’re a horrible person Alex Gaskarth! I fucking stood up for you! Jack is a wonderful boy who is caring and sweet, now look at him! Look at what you did to him! Just because of what happened? And you have the balls to look sorry, to try and come near us?! Just go away Alex, and never talk to us again!”

I was crying. I had never sworn or yelled at someone like that before. Jack was broken enough, he didn't need someone as fucked up as Alex in his life. I just wish I hadn't stood up for the jerk. For once in my life, I was wrong.

I watched as Alex backed away, tears in his eyes. He shot down the hallway and out of the building. The nurse arrived about two minutes after, we helped her get Jack and take him to her office. Once we were in there and Jack was laying down on the uncomfortable looking bed Rian turned to me.

“Damn Cass.”

“What?”

“I've never seen you explode like that.”

“Yeah, well, he deserved it.”

“Oh no, I know. I’m just saying, well done.”

I blushed and looked down at Jack.

“I hope he’ll be alright.”

I sniffled and Rian pulled me to his chest. I hugged him back, he helped me stay relaxed. The nurse came back and checked his bandages after about ten minutes and said the bleeding had stopped. Thank god.

“Can you two take him home? Tell his mother that he needs to take two pain killers once he wakes up. Make sure his bandages are checked and changed every hour. Also, if he seems to be worsening to take him to the hospital.”

“Of course! Thank you so much.”

“Any time. You two seem like good friends for this young man. Now, being good friends, are you going to tell me who did this?”

Rian and I exchanged a look before looking at Jack.

“I think that should be up to him.”

“Sweety, this is very serious. He could have major trauma, possibly died even. Are you sure you don’t want to change your answer?”

I looked back at Rian. An unspoken agreement passing between us.

We had dropped Jack off at home, his mother was just getting ready to leave. She had instantly began freaking out when she saw her son passed out with a bandage wrapped around his head. We told her what the nurse had told us and she thanked us profusely. We were about to leave, after laying Jack on his bed, when his mother called out to us.

“Wait! I didn't get your names.”

“Oh, I’m Cass and this is Rian. We are friends of Jacks.”

She came forward and pulled us both into a big bear hug.

“Thank you so much for taking care of my baby boy. I’m so glad he has finally found friends like you.”

She pulled away with a smile before saying goodbye and closing the door. Rian and I walked back to his car and got in, just sitting there in Jack’s driveway. Rian let out a sigh and looked at me.

“Well, I don’t know about you but I don’t think I want to go back there right now.”

I nodded in agreement. He backed out and started driving towards his house, his parents were working late tonight.

“Rian?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you think we made the right decision? Like, will Jack understand why we did it?”

Rian sighed and reached over to hold my hand, gently rubbing his thumb over my knuckles.

“I’m sure he will. Besides, we did the right thing, whether he agrees or not. He got what was coming to him.”

“Let’s go back over to Jack’s tomorrow to see how he’s doing and tell him what happened. Alright?”

“Sure love.”

I gave him a small smile before looking out the window at the passing houses.

He got what was coming to him.
